Son et Lumière "Jeanne et ses Chevaliers"
24-31 July & 1-2 August 2008
In July and August 2008, the ancient medieval town of Josselin in Brittany will celebrate its 1000th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, a Son et Lumière will be presented in the grounds of le Manoir de Mongrenier, a beautiful granite manor house in the heart of Brittany, dating back to the 13th century.
The theme of this magnificent spectacle is based on the history of The Battle of the Thirty Knights, which took place during the 100 Years War between France and England, near to Josselin. One of the thirty Franco/Breton knights who fought in this ferocious battle was Guillaume de Montauban and at that time, the family of de Montauban owned Le Manoir de Mongrenier. Based on these two historical facts, a drama of love, treason, passion and disaster unfolds against the backcloth of the beautiful Manoir de Mongrenier, during which Jeanne de Montauban, Guillaume's sister, falls in love with an English knight, William de Cailly. In hand-to-hand combat, Guillaume kills her lover and becomes the hero of the battle. The music has been specially commissioned and, with a cast of over 50 actors, the story will be told in English and French. In addition to the Son et Lumière, each performance will start with a medieval banquet, parades of knights in armour, archery competitions, jugglers and demonstrations of local arts and crafts.
