About the Property
The Old Bakery, Trégranteur, Morbihan, Brittany.
WHAT VISITORS HAVE SAID – 2008 will be the first year we have rented the Old Bakery to paying guests. Over the past few years we have had friends stay at the house and this is what they have said –
‘All the things we wanted to do were all near to the house – we didn’t have to travel’
‘Because it’s made of granite, the house remained wonderfully cool when it was hot outside’
‘So much space – the kids were somewhere else and I managed to read 2 books during my holiday for the first time in a long time’
‘Just what the doctor ordered – a complete chill out’
LOCAL AREA AND ACTIVITIES Tregranteur is a beautifully preserved small historic village where the houses and church are made of local stone and the XVIII century chateau, the Chateau de Tregranteur, is opposite The Old Bakery. The village is set in beautiful and tranquil countryside but within easy reach of a wide range of tourist attractions and leisure activities.
Places to Visit:
Historic Towns, Chateaux, Museums, Forests, Lakes and Rivers
-
The historic town of Josselin with its imposing chateau overlooking the river Oust
-
The 1,000 year old town of Malestroit where the canal meets the river in a series of weirs
-
The village of Rochefort-en-Terre
-
The Lac au Duc with its circular walk and watersports activities
-
The Eco Museum, the Insectarium and the Puppet Museum
-
The Forest of Broceliande – a land of legends
-
The Saturday morning market in Josselin
Activities:
Walking, Cycling, Canoeing
Tregranteur is located in the middle of a network of well marked footpaths allowing short and long walks through lovely rural landscapes with woods, rivers, rolling countryside and long distance views.
It is also about 4 km from the Nantes–Brest Canal which has an excellent towpath and cycle track that links with the Voie Vert, another walking and cycle track following a disused railway line for many miles in both directions.
The roads around Tregranteur are not busy and are also ideal for cycling.
Four adult bikes are available free of charge, and walking and cycling route maps are available at the house. Other bikes and canoes can be hired in Josselin.
The Coast - Swimming and Boating
The South Brittany cost is about 45 minutes drive away and the Golfe du Morbihan is a huge inland sea with boat trips available around the Gulf and to the islands.
The ancient town of Vannes, at the edge of the Gulf is another favourite tourist stop as is Carnac to the West with its impressive collection of standing stones.
On the other side of the Rhys Peninsula from the Gulf there are small seaside towns and villages with sandy beaches. We would recommend St Gildas de Rhys and Damgan or Carnac and the Quiberon Peninsula if you prefer large resorts.
Ferries run to the large offshore island of Belle Ille from Quiberon
Events, Music and Folk Dancing
During the summer months all towns and villages have their festivals and celebrations, which are normally free, so there are opportunities to experience traditional Breton cultural activities nearby. Full details of the local ‘Fest Nos’ and other events are available from the Tourist Information Office in Josselin.
Eating Out
There are many restaurants serving fine and very reasonably priced meals in the area. The ‘formula’ 3 course meals, which most restaurants provide are amazing value.
We would recommend the Chateau Hotel by the river in Josselin overlooking the chateau in Josselin and with a terrace over the River Oust.
Full details of restaurants around the area are available at La Vieille Boulangerie.
