Climbing and Mountaineering Holidays in France
France has some wonderful opportunities for climbing whatever your ability level. Everyone from complete beginners to seasoned experts can find a location that will provide an exhilarating challenge, and with the stunning scenery and delicious food too it’s no wonder France is a popular holiday destination for climbers from all over the world.
The most famous region for climbing is probably the area around Chamonix and Mont Blanc but there are plenty of other areas for climbers to explore. The less touristy Durance Valley in the Haute Alps offers plenty of classic alpine ascents as well as modern bolted routes, the Verdon Valley and Ceuse provide a great challenge for more experienced climbers, and Haute Provence has thousands of climbing routes with a good concentration of high quality crags and a climate that’s great all year round so it’s ideal for out of season visits. Other areas to consider include the French Pyrenees, the Gorges du Tarn and Les Calanques on the south coast.
France is also a fabulous location for climbers who enjoy bouldering with the forests of Fontainbleau offering the best bouldering landscape in Europe. Kerlouan near Brest also has a wonderful coastline for bouldering and is a perfect destination for a climbing holiday in Brittany.
