| Location and activities: | Ten minutes away are the Brossac Lakes. A great day out. Set in the local forest, an open lake with a beach and a restaurant. There is horse riding, walking trails and quad bikes available. If you like wine then you must visit St-Emilion. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Emilion was a stop on the pilgrimage path that led from northern Europe to Spain’s Santiago de Compostela, in those days the most popular pilgrimage destination in Christendom. As locals built inns, hostels and other facilities to host travellers, the area’s tasty wines acquired a reputation especially among the English, that never left them. Other attractions include the village’s narrow medieval streets and ancient underground chambers used to store wine. Saint-Emilion is a perfect place in which to contemplate old things and how they keep their identities even as the ages unfold. When that contemplation is aided by wine from a vineyard whose soil has been cultivated for 2,000 years, the effect is a memorable one. Bordeaux, an 18th century architectural gem, owes its beauty to architects spanning a number of periods: Jacques Gabriel Les Allées de Tourny, Victor Louis Le Grand Théâtre, Jacques d'Welles the municipal stadium and Richard Rogers, who designed not only the Beaubourg Centre in Paris but also the Bordeaux Court of First Instance. It has over 350 historic monuments in a protected area of 147 hectares, as well as 3 churches (Saint-André, Saint-Michel, and Saint-Seurin). Above and beyond its lovely architecture, Bordeaux was chosen for its attractive, vibrant, and cosmopolitan districts. From the narrow streets of the Saint-Michel quarter to buildings from the 60s and 70s in Mériadeck, these districts reflect the life of a city that has evolved without losing its character or identity. There is a night time tour to discover the city's most beautiful monuments under floodlights! Something for the kids. Then visit the famous La dune d pyla. It is set 60km outside Bordeaux on the coast and has a height of 107m high. It's a natural adventure playground whether you want to walk up it, roll down it, snowboard down it, para-glide off it or just enjoy a leisurely stroll. The views are fantastic as you look over the Atlantic and then back over the pine forests. A great day out. Nearby places of interest include Cognac about 30km away. Take the tour around the Cognac factory or even take a trip up the river. Aubeterre is about 35 minutes away and is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. With its quaint narrow streets and beautiful little square, surrounded by places to eat and drink, this is a place to amble and just sigh. This little village is rich in art and antiques. Want to go to the coast, then La Rochelle is the place. This bustling sea port is alive with culture. Artists line the streets displaying their wares, whether it is fine art, sculpture, abstract, jewellery, street entertainment, the list is endless. It has miles of sandy beaches and shallow water to play on and in. Whilst there, take a trip to Il de Ré and Royan. A Great Place for leisure pursuits, Angouleme enjoys a healthy lifestyle and a pleasant climate. Bikes can be hired on arrival and it is well worth it with so many splendid cycle paths around. The coastline is an easy excursion away and is certainly not to be missed. Its long sandy beaches are world-renowned and attract many surfers. Although, if golfing is more you’re thing then you’re also in luck. There are a number of fine courses for you to practice your swing on. The region is considered an ideal place to have a summer vacation. The best part is, it's only 40km away. |
