Location and activities:	45 minutes from La Rochelle. Benefiting from a micro-climate, La Bretonniere is a small rural village on the D60, situated between Mareuil-sur-Lay and Lairoux. Lucon (just over 6km away) has hypermarkets, shops, restaurants and a market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. The village is ideally situated for walking and cycling and has its own marais (managed water meadows) where you can see egrets, herons, bitterns, swans, storks and sometimes sacred ibis. A nature reserve is only a few miles away, as is the coast (½ hour drive) with long sandy beaches. Thousands of migratory birds pass over the area in Spring and Autumn. For golfers there are 5 golf courses within easy reach. Wine lovers may go wine-tasting at local vineyards.Visit gardens or the Venise Verte with its tranquil duckweed covered waterways, beautiful La Rochelle and its aquarium, Les Sables-d'Olonne, start of the Vendee Globe (Ellen McArthur); it also has a good zoo.
