What to See and Do
Owners Recommendations
Eating Out
'Local Villages'
"Le Grillardiere in the main square of Marennes is generally good and Le Bar National next door is convenient for a lunchtime steak-frites or a salad outside under the trees.
In Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, about 10 minutes by car, there is Le Terminus restaurant overlooking the harbour which serves good food in the restaurant and the outside bar area.
Across the river bridge in La Tremblade Port there are several seafood restaurants specialising in local oysters, mussels etc.
Over the bridge to Ile d'Oleron there are many bars and restaurants.
Details in the chalet information book and on our website."
'Marennes Port'
"The port attached to Marennes village about 10 minutes from the chalet has an active fishing port and a group of seafood restaurants and oyster bars overlooking the sea. The area is being developed as the oyster capital of France called Cite de l’Huitre. Some of the restaurants look basic but are very popular with the French; L'Escale and La Verte Ostrea by the harbour and Le Cayenne on the road to the port are very popular, be there by noon if you want a table for Sunday lunch."
'On site'
"On site facilities include Le Carrousel bar and restaurant serving simple meals and top quality regional dishes, a takeaway pizza shop and a takeaway serving "steak frites" and similar meals. The camp shop serves fresh bread and croissants every morning."
Local Area and Activities
'A Day for the Children'
"The site pool complex includes 4 connected pools and a lazy river together with several waterslides, childrens toys and a snack bar. Next to the pool is a childrens playground. Families can spend long, happy days without going anywhere!"
'Beaches'
"There is a small, protected children's beach at Marennes Plage. Magnificent beaches stretch for miles along the Cote Sauvage south of the chalet and on the west coast of Ile d'Oléron across the bridge. Both areas excellent for surfing and windsailing or just lazing on the beach."
'Nearby Towns'
"Many attractive and historic towns are within easy reach. There is a Roman amphitheatre in Saintes, historic tourist sites in Rochefort, distillery tours in Cognac and several delightful seaside towns including Fouras, Ronce-les-Bains, La Cotiniere on the Ile d'Oléron and many others. The major seaside resort of Royan with its busy seafront bars and restaurants is about 40 minutes away."
'Visit La Rochelle'
"The historic town of La Rochelle is about 40 minutes drive north and includes an historic port now used as a marina, a beautiful old town with shops, bars, restaurants etc as well as tourist spots including an aquarium and maritime museum."
'Visit the Zoo'
"The zoo at La Palmyre is about 40 minutes drive away on the road to Royan and is well worth a visit. Lots of animals (they say over 1600) in a pleasant setting over 40 acres. It is close to Royan or Sainte-Palais-de-Mer so the trip can be combined with a visit to one of these seaside resorts."
Markets and Shopping
'Street and Indoor Markets'
"There is a huge traditional street and indoor market in Rochefort on Thursday mornings (15 mins drive) and others in Marennes and almost all the surrounding towns."
'Supermarkets'
"There is a good sized mini-market on-site and 2 full sized supermarkets in Marennes just 5 minutes drive from the chalet."
