What to See and Do
Owners Recommendations
Eating Out
'Auberge des Gabariers, Argentat'
"On the quayside at Argentat this is a wonderful setting for a lunch or evening meal. As well as the a la carte menu there are set menus at €15, €26 and €34."
'La Maury, Manzagol'
"La Maury is a holiday centre on the lakeside in Manzagol where there is a bar/restaurant. It is a wonderful setting on the side of the lake. It has an a la carte menu as well as €17 and €21 menus."
'Restaurant des Voyageurs et des Touristes, Le Falgoux'
"Whilst a little further away on the road between Mauriac and Puy Mary this restaurant makes a pleasant lunch halt. They have set menus at €14 and €17, and a la carte. The restaurant has magnificent panoramic views over the valley and up towards Puy Mary. The owner, Bernard, speaks a little English"
Local Area and Activities
'Besse and Super Besse'
"With picturesque shop-lined streets dating from the 15th and 16th centuries Besse is in the heart of the St Nectaire cheese producing region. Nearby Super Besse is one of the largest ski centres in the region."
'Birds and Wildlife '
"This doesn’t have to be very active since there is a large variety seen from the house. Animal visitors to the garden and/or lotissement through the year include hare, frogs, lizards, red squirrel, bats, deer and, unfortunately, pine marten. Birds seen in the garden or from the house include robin, chaffinch, greenfinch, bullfinch, house and hedge sparrows, blackbird, robin, blue tit, great tit, coal tit, willow tit, crested tit, long tailed tit, nuthatch, green woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker, black redstart, pied wagtail common buzzard, red kite, black kite, great crested grebe, great northern diver, heron, swallow, swift and house martin. In the vicinity stoat, badger and barn owls have been seen."
'Bort-Les-Orgues'
"Whilst Bort-Les-Orgues itself is an ordinary country town it has a small fortified church with its original stalls. However its main attraction is a massive natural formation known as the Organ Pipes which is a high cliff worn into a series of stark rock pillars 80m to 100m high. Just outside Bort-Les-Orgues is the Chateau du Val which is on the lakeside. It is open to visitors with a guided tour. In addition there are boat trips on the lake."
'Fishing'
"This can be done on the lake as well as surrounding rivers and lakes. A popular location is on the bridge from the main Neuvic/Ussel road to the lotissement. A licence needs to be obtained and this is available in Neuvic. "
'Golf'
"There is a golf course in Neuvic on the road leading to the lake. Other courses are between Tulle and Brive at Aubazine, about 45 miles away, at Peyrelevade and near Gouzon about 60 miles away. Details can be obtained from the Neuvic course. Equipment can be hired from Neuvic but I don't know about the other courses. "

"This spa town with its thermal baths is the centre of winter sports in the Massif Central. The town has some excellent restaurants and shops. Above the town is Puy Sancy which you can either walk or take a cable car to the top. A car park and restaurant are at the base."
'Puy Mary'
"At the junction of the D680 and D17 those who are energetic can walk to the table of orientation at the summit, 1787 metres. Those less inclined can enjoy the magnificent views from the bar/restaurant at the car park. "
'Rocamadour'
"South of Martel just off the N140, about 50-70 miles away, Rocamadour is a religious town. It is built on the side of a cliff and well worth a visit although it is a tourist attraction. On the route take in Bealieu-sur-Dordogne sometimes referred to as ‘Limousin Riviera’ this picturesque town on the Dordogne has a 12th century church. Also visit the village of Padirac on the D673 about 8 miles from Rocamadour. A visit to the caves is recommended.
"
'Salers'
