The volcanic plateaux and river gorges of Haute Loire are a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts on holiday here, offering activities that range from trout fishing on the upper reaches of the River Loire through to walking, cycling and even hang-gliding. Although winters can be harsh in high altitude Haute Loire, this little known southerly department of the Auvergne also offers visitors some 2000 hours of sunshine annually and the delightful town of Brioude - gateway to the Gorges of the River Allier - holds a French record for least rainful in a year.
