What to See and Do
Owners Recommendations
Eating Out
'Le Vieux Porche'
"This very busy restaurant, just 5 kms from Toupinerie Bas really deserves its year-round popularity. The best value is always the Menu du Jour at 12 euros for 4 courses inc. wine. If you want to push the boat out there are other menu's including fish soup, snails and foie gras. Highly recommended for generous portions of family cooking and a nice busy atmosphere. A little more expensive on Sundays. Beware it is closed on Friday evening and Saturday."
'The Italian Pizza Restaurant'
"It's popularity never seems to diminish. The family run restaurant on the square in Eymet offers great value and genuine fresh cooked Italian specialities all through the summer. There are tables in the old stone walled restaurant and many others, more each year (?) outside on the square. It is a beautiful setting and so popular that you cannot book. Go at lunchtime or arrive by seven , or wait until around nine in the evening to be sure of a table. Some families have been known to go here every night of their holiday."
Local Area and Activities
'Bordeaux'
"Do make the effort to visit Bordeaux. You can go by train from Marmande or use the Park and Ride facility from the motorway. This offers parking for just 3 euros and tickets for the tramway which serves Bordeaux. The centre has been extensively renovated , the buidings are magnificent and the mirror pool is a lovely feauture of the park which runs alonside the river. Incidently this is also very cooling for hot feet on sunny day! The towncentre shops are very chic and seriously tempting.Try to visit the Girondins monument, Le Grand Theatre , sit and people watch at one of the lovely cafes and soak up the atmosphere.Bordeaux has been named a "site mondial" by UNESCO, not to be missed."
'The Canal '
"One of our favourite activities is to walk or bike ride along the canal towpath which has been renovated for most of its length to provide a smooth ride, wheelchair users please note. The scenery is wonderful and the temperature delightful on those blazing hot sunny days when the shade of the trees is desirable. There is so much to discover and occasional little canalside cafes and restaurants appear. You may remember the BBC programme of Rick Stein's voyage along this stretch of the canal stopping at Bazas and Marmande etc."
'Wine trails.'
"There are signposted wine trails throughout the region. They are a great way to discover this beautiful landscape. Follow one of these routes and visit the vineyards which welcome visitors. You can taste the wines and buy a few bottles or bag in boxes .Don't feel you will be obliged to spend a fortune, although of course you can stock up if wish."
Markets and Shopping
'Daily Markets.'
"It is no exaggeration to say that you could shop in a different street market every day of the week. These are an essential part of French life, we provide a comprehensive list in the house. The markets do provide the best of local produce . We are so lucky here to have so much on offer, asparagus, strawberries, cherries, melons, salads, apricots , peaches, foie gras, magret de canard , cheese from the Pyrenees or local goats cheese, as well as all the wines to accompany them. It only remains to stagger home and cook something wonderful on the barbeque. Stop first for a cold beer at the cafe on the square and enjoy the scene."
'Evening markets.'
"Many of our local towns and villages hold evening markets during July and August. These are great fun and often have interesting crafts and food produce and local wines for sale. The most popular are Eymet with a great trade in Moules Frites and Levignac de Guyenne with lively dancing and great street food.Memories are made of evenings such as this."
