Country Cottage (BF000893) - 2 Bedroom - Cottage

The house is situated in a wooded valley, on the outskirts of a hamlet of very old fishermens cottages. It looks out over a wooded area which is crossed by many footpaths and remote tracks used by walkers and joining up with the coastal footpath which can be reached within15 minutes walk from the house. About 150 metres away from the house is the ancient chapel of St Julien, used only once a year for a Pardon (festival) and on the tourist map, as a place of historic interest.

The House

The downstairs of the house is divided into kitchen/dining area and sitting area. The kitchen has newly fitted units and is equipped with a fridge-freezer, electric oven, gas hob, microwave, washing machine etc. The sitting area has a 3 seater sofa and a 2 seater sofabed (4ft mattress) plus video, cd, dvd player and radio. It is heated by wall mounted electric heaters and a log fire. Upstairs, there is a double bedded room and one with 3 single beds. Duvets pillows and blankets are provided but not linen. Cot, highchair and potty. The bathroom has a bath with shower above, wc and basin. Outside the entrance is a stone patio, surrounded by flower-beds, which leads up stone steps to the bbq (gas) area. Above that is a large garden (40m x 12m approx), mainly grass with a few shrubs and trees. In the garden shed there are 3 bikes that you are most welcome to use.

The Area

St Julien lies at the end of the Crozon Peninsula, which is about 20 miles long and at its northern point is about 3 miles across the water from Brest. There are regular ferries from Camaret and Le Fret. Camaret, the nearest town 1½ miles away, is twinned with St Ives, Cornwall and has an artists quarter and is famed for the quality of its light. Once a busy sardine port, it now has a thriving marina and has a sailing/diving school, a working harbour and lovely sandy beaches as well as several hotels, numerous seafood restaurants and bars. This is the nearest shopping centre with one supermarket but the town still retains the charm of the traditional port. 

One mile to the south of St Julien is the beautiful beach of Kedoc’h, which joins the beach of Goulien at low tide, giving 1½ miles of safe, unspoilt sand, sweeping round in a semi-circle to the scenic coastal footpath ending in the spectacular Pointe de Dinan. Crozon, the main town (5 miles approx), with several supermarkets, banks, quality shops etc has a busy market on Wednesdays in the old cobbled streets round the town square. It is linked with Morgat, a quiet residential resort, with a beautiful sandy beach, bars and restaurants, nestling under wooded cliffs. It is an ideal place for sailing and all watersports, having a large marina with sailing school, windsurfing etc in a sheltered bay. The town has a new indoor swimming pool. Golf, fishing and sports nearby.

During the summer there are musical events in Camaret and Morgat. These range from classical concerts, held in churches, to folk and modern groups performing on the harbourside in the evenings. August is also the month when it is possible to see Breton culture and traditions in local fetes The peninsula has miles of well signed coastal and inland footpaths with sheer rocky cliffs, covered in heather, a mass of colour against the blue sea and long deserted sandy beaches, some of which provide good surfing. There are many picturesque hamlets of stone fishermen's cottages, many used as holiday homes by the French, and therefore only (relatively) busy in August. Further inland, the patchwork of fields and wooded valleys, together with old market towns and villages provide interesting excursions, as do the ruins of the monastery at Landevennec, Menez Hom (the highest point on the peninsula) with its wonderful views of the Bay of Douarnenez, the huge area of water to the north (Rade de Brest) and the open sea. The whole area is ideal for walking and cycling with stunning scenery and unexpected glimpses of inlets and creeks in all directions.
