General: About the location
Tregarvan itself is a small, very quiet and tranquil village. There is a delightful 16th - 18th century church, riverside promenade, moorings where locals keep their boats, and a community hall. At the top of the hill there is the Breton Rural School Museum that is of national significance and well worth a visit. Tregarvan sits below the Menez-Hom mountain, the highest in the region at 330m. On a clear day the panoramic view of the area from the top is breathtaking and well worth the drive up.

At Tregarvan, you can enjoy real French rural life whilst being able to access the lovely towns of Châteaulin (15 minutes) and Douarnenez (20 minutes) to soak up the Bretagne culture and history. The beautiful village of Locronan (20 minutes) and the town of Quimper (45 minutes) are within very easy reach. The city of Brest, the regional capital, and major tourist resorts of Benodet and Concarneau are within an hours drive.

What to See and Do

Owners Recommendations

'Beaches'
"The nearest beach is Prentez-Plage. If you head for St Nic you will see signs for it. Prentez is long, very safe for children and great sand for castles, boat building etc. If you head up the coast there are small coves with rock pools and other sandy beaches (Trez-Bellec-Plage). There are also great beaches down the coast towards Douarnenez."

'Locronon'
"Locronan is well worth a visit. It is a very old town with a magnificent church. It is apparently often used as a location for French tv and film crews. You can get to Locronan via Plomodiern or by turning right on the Douarnenez road just before you reach Chateaulin "

'Menez-Hom'
"Menez-Hom is the big hill behind Tregarvan. If you take the D887 towards Chateaulin you will see a sign indicating Menez-Hom to your left. This road will take you about two thirds of the way up the hill and you then have to walk the rest of the way to the top. It is worth the effort and, on a clear day, you can see for miles."

'Shopping'
"Dineault, in the direction of Chateaulin, is about 4 miles away but has very little in the way of facilities. Apart from the doctors surgery there is a pharmacy, small grocery store, creperie and bakers shop. Its one redeeming feature is that it has a really nice pub with a friendly landlord. We understand that they serve food on occasions. Argol, on the D60 towards Crozon, is also about 4 miles away but has a little more in the way of shops. The village square has a couple of bar/restaurants, a creperie, small grocers shop and a newsagent. This seems to be a busy village and we have seen street markets and other events here. Plomodiern is a little further away, and reached via a turning off the D887 at Ste Marie du Menez-Hom. Plomodiern is a large village with an excellent (Intermarche) supermarket on the main road. The supermarket also sells bottled gas and petrol. There are also smaller shops and restaurants in this village. Chateaulin (market day Thursday) is the nearest town of any size and is about a 20-25 minute drive from our house. As you reach the town you will pass under a railway bridge then reach a T-junction at the river. If you turn left at this junction then right at the first set of lights, you will come to a huge supermarket – ELeclerc. Here they sell just about anything you could want on holiday – food, clothes, wine, petrol etc. If you drive a diesel car, fill up here before you go home – the prices are excellent! "

'Tregarvan'
"The village, our village, is extremely quiet and will suit those looking for a relaxing holiday. We understand that there are only 157 residents and that includes us! We also understand that at some time in the past there were 12 bars in Tregarvan! Unfortunately there are none today. Take a little time to walk or drive around the village – it won’t take long. If you head down the road towards the river you will pass the office of the Mairie (local mayor) and the church. Off to one side of the main road is a fairly new village hall and we are told that from time to time there are social events there. The promenade by the estuary is great in the evening just to sit and watch the sun go down. The owners of the farm next door are very friendly and greet us every time they see us - usually a couple of times a day when they take the cows for milking! We suggest that you keep the gate closed at all times otherwise you may get a nosy cow in the garden! The School Museum located at the top of hill, on the cross roads, as you enter Tregarvan is well worth a visit. "
