What to See and Do

Owners Recommendations

Eating Out

'Restaurants'
"We have several restaurants in Montreuil-Bellay, ranging from the Hostellerie Saint Jean (Michelin knife and fork) through traditional French, pizzerias, a creperie, grills and snacks in cafes, as well as a traditional meal in the 15th century tithe barn. Every taste and price-range is catered for and you will get a warm welcome. "

Local Area and Activities

'Chateaux'
"This being the Loire, there are many chateaux to visit, including the one here in Montreuil-Bellay. Still privately owned, you will enjoy not only its history, but its lived-in feeling, with photographs and family heirlooms as well as more ancient memorabilia. Here in the Western Loire, chateaux were built as fortifications more than the pleasure palaces further upstream, which were summer homes to which the Court escaped the Parisian heat. Angers is particularly impressive, both for its forbidding aspect protecting the area from invaders sailing from the Atlantic up the River Loire, and for its medieval tapestry recounting the Apocalypse. "

'Fishing'
"The River Thouet runs alongside Montreuil-Bellay and is just one of the many rivers and lakes with a good variety of fish. You'll need a fishing permit, but can then spend happy hours watching kingfishers, sipping wine cooled in the river, and maybe even catching some fish!"

'History'
"Centuries of close ties between this region, Anjou, and England. Richard the Lionheart, his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, father Henri and brother John are all buried at the nearby Royal Abbey at Fontevraud. If you are lucky enough to be here between 12-25 July, you can see an atmospheric re-enactment of the founding of the Abbey in the 12th century and its subsequent history."

'Horses'
"Our nearest larger town, Saumur, has another instantly recognisable chateau. It is also home to the French National Riding School, the French equivalent of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. During a morning's visit, you can watch the riders practising and marvel at their horsemanship. They also give several public shows during the summer."

'Mushrooms'
"Mushroom growing is second only to wine production in this area. You can see them being grown in the maze of limestone galleries that run for kilometres underground. Try the local speciality, galipettes, large mushrooms stuffed with garlic butter, goats cheese or rillettes."

'Wine'
"The lifeblood of the region and a major interest to all our visitors. The Saumur area produces red, white, rose and champagne method sparkling wines. They are light and delicious. Many producers offer wine-tastings and visits to the underground galleries where they make their wines. "

Markets and Shopping

'Factory Outlets'
"If you like a bargain, you'll love the factory outlets at Cholet, 40 minutes drive. Mostly clothes and shoes, but some household goods too."

'Food Markets'
"There is a market within easy driving distance every day of the week. Montreuil-Bellay's is on Tuesday mornings, with great fresh fish, poultry and charcuterie, as well as the abundance of salads, fruit and vegetables that are grown in the fertile alluvial soil of the Loire Valley. The Friday market at Thouars (15km) has a large covered 'halles' as well as a huge open area. It has a national reputation for its quality and freshness."
