What to See and Do

Owners Recommendations

'Canoeing on the Dordogne'
"This is a whole day activity. You take a picnic with you, choose a nice sunny day and drive up to St Sozy on the Dordogne. There you are provided with single or double canoes or kayaks, a bidon to keep your picnic and towels dry and set off down the river. The river is clean enough to swim in and there are delightful castles on the cliffs above. When you get to Souillac a minibus collects you and returns you to your car, booking essential in summer. "

'La Grotte de Pech Merle'
"A really interesting cave with beautiful stalagmites and stalagtites as well as cave paintings of horses, cattle and other animals with an unusual feature of hands outlined in red - well worth a visit but should telephone first."

'Le Chateau de Cenevieres'
"A lovely chateau with a terrace high above the river Lot. It has a fascinating painted alchemist's chamber. Just west of here is the famous scenic village of St Cirq la Popie."

'Markets nearby'
"There are lovely markets in the area: Luzech has a market every Wednesday with local produce, shoes, ironmongery, foie gras and paella. Prayssac has a food and fish market on Fridays in the circular roads around the church, Montcuq has a great, if slightly touristy, market on Sundays and the medieval centre of Cahors has markets on several weekdays"

'Restaurants'
"The Lot is one of the famous gastronomic areas of France with ducks and truffles as local specialities. There is a wide range of restaurants to suit any palate (or pocket), but our favourites are the Michelin-starred Le Gindreau and La Terrace at Grezels. La Terrace is only open at lunchtime: you turn up about 12.30 and eat what you are given - about 7 delicious courses plus some wine. Not to be missed, but not really suitable for children."
