Beautiful house, best we have stayed in. Restaurant in St. Germaine excellent. The snow made everything look Christmasy so we played carols! Lovely selection of games and music. The house was so cosy to come back to. It is so well equipped we were able to cook some lovely meals with some yummy French food.

Owners Recommendations

Eating Out

'Budget Eating Out'
"For a low cost meal we go to Pizza Christina in Vire. A starter, pizza, wine and water costs under 30 Euros for 2. The owners are great and we always enjoy the visit. Basic, but pleasant. We don't know how they keep their prices low. Le Four a Bois at Martilly on the way to Vire, also pizza, pasta and meats, 40 Euros for 2. "

'Excellent First Class Family Run Restaurants'
"Worth a visit as is Au Vrai Normand 14, rue Armand in Vire.Excellent first principle French food "

'Fine Dining'
"Le Moulin de Jean at St Pois. Excellent food if you want to splash out! Le Manoir de la Pommeraie (past Leclerc supermarket) is a little more expensive; I think the menu is about 35 to 40 Euros. The food there is different to Le Moulin. Not as fussy. More hearty. We have ate there 4 times and I don't think we have had dessert once. "

'Local Bar Experiences'
"There is a bar near La Pelviniere in Champ du Boult which has been modernised and is very friendly. They have a few provisions and the wine at 2.5 euros for a bottle to take away is fine!!! The bar in St Manvieu Bocage near La Clartiere also has a few provisions and bread and is “very local” – worth a visit for the experience and the “plat du jour”. Also a “fish & chip” van run by an English family visits on a Wednesday(check it is running) and you can eat them in the bar which is normally packed so get there early from 6pm I think. "

'Summary'
"There's lots of choice, We don't favour one in particular. Back to choice. Le Manoir or Le Moulin if you want to make an occasion of it. It ought to be selected for special occasions. Auberge de St. Germaine or Au Vrai Normand in the middle ranges or the pizza restaurants are good. Watch the wine prices although, unlike the UK if you pay a lot it is usually noticeably very good but equally the House wines in France also tend to be very good. "

Local Area and Activities

'A Lot of Things to do in The Area'
"There will be lots of information at the cottages but the following are a few “must do’s” when in the area all within about 1 hour travelling and you may be able to research more online depending what you like doing. The neighbours who run the smallholding next door to La Pelviniere are M.Pierre and Mme. Pierette. They are brilliant and may have fresh eggs available. Please give them our regards if you speak to them. It depends on your interests but try “Googling” for further info on all the items listed or anything else you might want to see. Hope this helps. Stephen & Eileen Plummer "

'Bayeux'
"Bayeux tapestry and town only 1 hour away. "

'Gods town of Frying Pans!'
"Villedieu les Poeles (Gods town of frying pans!!) 40 mins west www.ot-villedieu.fr/index.htm has a great market I think from memory on Tuesdays and is renowned for copper and brass and bell foundries. "

'Golf and Lake Walk'
"Nearby is Lake Dathee which has a nice gentle circular walk around the lake and picnic areas. Above the lake is a great 18 hole golf course and the views are brilliant. "

'Mont St. Michel'
"Mont St. Michel and Granville on the coast to the West "

'Swiss Normandy'
"Swiss Normandy is an area of Normandy that includes the Orne and Calvados districts, south of the River Seine. Its name comes from the River Orne that flows across the area, making deep gorges and cliffs and so creating spectacular rocky landscapes. The main towns in Suisse Normandy are Thury-Harcourt, Clecy and Pont d'Ouilly. Nearby, Falaise, birthplace of William the Conqueror, makes for an interesting visit too. "

'Vire Town and Market and Internet Cafe'
"Vire market again from memory is Friday and there is a tourist information centre and internet café near the main car park (free!!!) just off the centre. "

'Walking Trails'
"Also nearby is a railway track converted to a footpath/bridleway if you fancy a day walking. Also nearby try the Vire Gorges www.calvados-tourisme.info/loisirs/route-vire or the St. Sever forest which is very close. "

'WW2 Normandy Landing Beaches'
"The Normandy landing beaches are about 1¼ hours away with lots to see "

'WW2 Pegasus Bridge'
"Pegasus Bridge is the name of the bridge that crosses the Caen Canal and was a crucial Allied objective. On the night before D-Day June 6th 1944, it was the target of a daring glider assault just after midnight. The original bridge was replaced in 1994, and is now the main focus of the Memorial Pegasus to the east of the site. This museum has a display of helmets, goggles and medals as well as a selection of model bridges used to plan the successful attack. The nearby Gondree Cafe was used as an aid post. The cafe owner, Monsieur Gondree, dug up his hidden supply of champagne which he had buried in his garden to safeguard it, and gladly shared it with his liberators. Today, Gondree Cafe has become the first stop on many visitors’ tour to Pegasus Bridge. Still owned by the Gondree family and still a cafe, the inside is a living museum. If you are looking for an insight into a crucial World War Two site, then a visit to Pegasus Bridge should definitely be on your list. We went last year and then they did tours in English. Depending on how you are travelling a good visit on the way to or from the cottage as it is a bit further away. "

'WW2 St Nazaire Submarine Pens WW2'
"Further south on the west coast are the submarine pens from WWii at St Nazaire "
