• Le Puit d'Enfer (Devils Well) with cascading waterfalls and luxurious vegetation (10 minutes).
• Lac du Lambon (10 minutes) set in a wooded valley offering swimming, boating, walking, fishing and bird-watching.
• Cognac(1 hour). Stroll through the cobbled streets of the old town or beside the river and visit the famous brandy houses ending with a tasting.
• La Rochelle (1 hour). "Paris by the sea". A sophisticated coastal town steeped in history, offering a restaurant for every day of the year and a variety of boat trips to the various offshore islands.
• Le Marais Poitevin (40 minutes). An area of inland waterways, dotted with pretty villages. Good for boating (either propel yourself or be chauffeured), cycling (hire bikes available), walking and bird-watching.
• If museums are your thing, why not visit the Military Museum in St Maxiant l'Ecole (5 minutes). This is attached to the military college and run by the French Army (FREE ENTRY).
