What to See and Do
Owners Recommendations
Eating Out
'Fish Specialities - Pezenas, Sete'
"It is worth the short drive to Pezenas, Valras-Plage and to the "Venice-style" resort of Sète with its boats and canals, to enjoy the excellent fish restaurants"
'Local Places at Lunchtime - or Evening'
"We enjoy eating out at many of the local cafe/bars for the "Plat du Jour" lunchtime menu - all good quality, well-prepared and served, with local wine included. Worth watching where the locals go to eat - they know best!!
There are great examples in Magalas, Roujan, Murviel, Pouzolles and Murviel"
'Local to St Genies'
"We can specifically recommend to eat out locally, and at low cost, in Magalas (La Tramontane, Excalibur) and between St Genies and Magalas at La Calabraise - information on each and others is available at our house."
Local Area and Activities
'Historic Towns'
"Many small historic towns and villages are a short drive (up to one hour) from the "circulade" village of St Genies. There is also the walled city of Carcassonne, the cave-village at Minervois, the Cathar castles inland from Narbonne, and the lovely city of Montpellier. More locally are interesting towns at Beziers, Pezenas, Rocqebrun and Olargues.
Michelin Guides, with details on all these places are kept at our house for your use."
'Mediterranean Beaches'
"There is a lovely choice of beaches and resorts within 30 minutes' drive - from the resorts of Valras-Plage and Narbonne Plage, to smaller places like Marseillan, Portiragnes, and Sergignan. You can enjoy a lovely meal at any of the many restaurants too, as well as time on the wide expanses of sandy beaches that slope gently into the sea at any time of the year. "
'River Swimming and Picnicing'
"The River Orb meanders through the region and is well worth visiting - from river swimming and picnicing outside of Murviel at Reals (where there is a canoeing centre), through Cessenon, to Roquebrun and along the twisty D14 toward Mons"
'Vide Grenier Markets'
"We can throughly recommend taking the time to visit local village "Vide Grenier" of loft clearance sales!! Not so much for what you might purchase, but more for the village vitality and life that you will see and experience. Largest is weekly on Saturday/Sunday, at St Chinian."
'Visiting into the Hills'
"Our house at St Genies is at the foothills of the Montagne Noire - well-worth visiting the villages of Autignac, Laurens, Faugeres on your way up toward Herepian and Bedarieux. The drive from Herepian, via the spa-town of Lamalou to Olargues and St Pons is very scenic, following the River Orb valley "
'Visiting Wine Cellars - Sampling Wine'
"The village of St Genies is well-placed for several renowned wine-growing districts of the Herault/Languedoc-Roussillon - at Faugeres, St Chinian, Murviel, and St Genies itself"
Markets and Shopping
'Shopping Locally'
"The village has its own bakery (boulangerie and patisserie) with a small mini-supermarket facing in the side-street opposite the house. These are open seven-days a week and are excellent value.
There is a large supermarket (Intermarche), hardware store (M Bricolage) and new supermarket (Lidl) between St Genies and Magalas, local shops and other supermarkets at Murviel and the outskirts of Beziers "
'Village Markets'
"There are many small villages, similar to St Genies in the local area - each has their own weekday market and particulars of these are kept at our house for your information.
The village has its own small market but the largest is on Saturday at Pezenas."
