Facilities

Property Type: Cottages
Location and activities: The house is one of two holiday cottages set in their own grounds and situated just off a quiet country lane in the small hamlet of La Croisiere. It has all the comforts of home in a peaceful location, yet close to an historic town situated on the Nantes- Brest canal with a fairytale chateau, bars, restaurents, supermarkets and banks. There is a lot of outdoor space surrounding the house with open views and sun all day across a large level 2000 square metres of garden with BBQ, giving ample room for everyone to relax and play. The whole of the Morbihan has the benefit of a micro-climate moving inland from the Gulf of Morbihan generating significantly milder and sunnier weather in this area. The surrounding countryside is criss-crossed with tranquil meandering pathways, many leading into the vast Forest of Lanouee. It is an unspoilt rural area with the benefit of easy motorway access for visiting places of interest. We don't live on site and our English caretakers are on hand only if you need them. A detailed route map from your chosen French ferry port is also provided.

Local Area and Activities

'1. Josselin'
"A few minutes by car. The chateau of Josselin has been the property of the Rohan family since the 15th century and has previous links by marriage. It is a magnificent sight as is the whole town which is on the banks of the Oust, (canalised at this point, forming part of the Nantes-Brest canal). The current 14th Duc, Josselin de Rohan and his family still live in the chateau, which is open to the public. He was a long serving mayor of Josselin until his appointment to the European Parliament. There are good supermarkets and wide selection of bars and restaurants. Sipping something cool on the main square with its basilica and timber framed houses is a lovely place to while away an hour or so, or watching the boats go by down on the canal. An annual medieval festival is held in the streets in July. Canoes and Kayaks can be hired at the quayside and bike hire in town, a wonderful way to explore the miles of navigable waterways and canal towpaths on your doorstep."

'2. Rohan'
"The town of Rohan is approximately 20 minutes away. Unfortunately the chateau now only exists on paper, drawings can be viewed at the local library. It is, however, a typical South Breton town also on the river Oust with some nice restaurants and bars. The river here, again, forms part of the Nantes-Brest canal and at this point a canal basin has been created giving rise to a small port, campsite and scenic lake, popular for strolling, fishing and a variety of water sports. Canoes/kayaks can be hired at the lakeside. 15 day fishing permits giving access to the whole of the Morbihan department are reasonably priced and available at the Tabac ‘Les Ducs’ in town."

'3. Abbey of Timadeauc'
"The Cistercian Abbey of Timadeauc is on the way to Rohan from Josselin. It has an interesting shop and sells a nice home-made cheese and other produce from their farm and orchards in season. Going in this direction from Josselin you will also pass through Les Forges. The town is notable for its pretty chateau and for its position on the edge of the vast private Forest of Lanouee. The Maison de Foret, (prominently placed at the road side) holds regular exhibitions on the history of the forest etc. and here it is possible to arrange visits to the chateau garden."

'4. Pontivy'
"Pontivy and imposing fortress chateau, is yet another seat of the Rohan family. It is a large and bustling Napoleonic town with restaurants, supermarkets, banks and very nice shops etc. about 30 mins by car. The old part of the town is contemporaneous with the 15th century chateau, but the newer grandiose sector, southwest of the town, was built by Napoleon Bonaparte and has at times taken the name of Napoleonville. He was responsible for linking Nantes to Brest by canalising the inland waterways well away from coastal attack. Pontivy is at the intersection of the Oust with the Blavet and this river valley to the southwest, which centres on the town of Guern, is particularly lovely."

'5. Ploermel'
"Ploermel is a nice normal town with a selection of big supermarkets and useful shops about 15 mins away by car. The Lac au Ducs on the outskirts of the town is another place with watersports, a good size beach and there is also a golf course. As the name suggests, there is a big lake and lakeside gardens on one side and a recreation area, beach and campsite on the other which is very popular with both tourists and locals. It is a great favourite with children."

'6. Vannes'
"The south coast is 1 hour by car and the lovely old coastal town of Vannes has markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Not far away is the Megalithic area known as the ‘Cotes de Megalith’ where the famous prehistoric monuments are the most concentrated. It lies between Lorient and The Gulf de Morbihan, an easy distance from Carnac of the ‘standing stones’. The seaside town of Carnac itself is another favourite with families for its long sandy beach. "

'7. Chateau '
"The are Chateau tours"

'8. Doll Museum'
"There is a doll museum which is well worth a visit"
