Owners Recommendations

Eating Out

'Local restaurants'
"Malestroit has a variety of local restaurants to suit all tastes. Prices are reasonable. For finer dining try 'le menu degustation' at Le Grain de Sel - 25 euros for a three course meal and aperitif. Le Canolier, in the market square, serves local dishes well cooked and offers a children's menu. For children, also try the pizza resturant opposite Le Grain de Sel - huge salads served as starters. All these rstaurants have outdoor seating areas in summer months, and a warm welcome in winter. We recommend that you make reservations."

Local Area and Activities

'Beaches '
"Carnac and Quiberon are both under an hour away and in the same direction. Carnac is busy, but with all the facilities needed, especially for children - good sandy beaches, beach equipment for hire and a wide selection of cafes and restaurants. Quiberon is similar; if you have time stop off along the peninsular road that leads to the town of Quiberon - you will find watersports and, out of season, quiet long expanses of sand and sea either side of the road. "

'Inland water activities'
"Le Lac des Ducs offers a wide range of water activities - equipment for hire and tuition. Follow signs through Ploermel for Le Lac and/or Camping. Go past the out of town shopping centre and the golf course - the main car park is at the camping. Be early in summer as parking is limited."

'Josselin'
"A short drive away, or a day by cycle along the canal path for the more energetic - no hills guaranteed! Josselin castle has a English-speaking tour at approximately 2.30pm. Wander the streets of this old town built in a hillside with its many shops, cafes and bars."

'Rochefort en Terre'
"A delighful small town about 20 minutes drive away and ideal for an afternoon out. Enjoy the small shops, many specialising in art and artefacts. Do visit the chocolate shop - ice creams and chocolate to die for, or enjoy people watching from the seat of one of the cafes on the main street. "

'The canal side'
"Malestroit is on the Nantes-Brest Canal. You can walk from the cottage to Malestroit and then follow the canal towpath. Follow the canal towards Brest (signposted) for about a mile and you can cross a bridge and return the other side. Look in at the fish museum on the canal side in Malestroit. Very popular with everyone on a Sunday afternoon. "

'Visitor recommendation'
"We had everything we needed. Lovely view and also nice and close to the shops. We will definitely return."

'Visitor recommendation'
"Very comfortable cottage and a good location - near to shops and 30 minutes to the beach. Being a sailing family we made good use of Le Lac des Ducs at Ploermel."

'Visitor recommendation'
"A really lovely cottage with beautiful surroundings. We highly recommend the music in the square in Malestroit."

Markets and Shopping

'Fresh Bread and Cakes'
"Buy these from the bakers rather than the supermarket. The best baker (in our opinion - having tried them all) is the one nearest the cottage where the D776 from the cottage to Malestroit meets the road from Ploermel. The shop is on the corner. More chocolate in the Pain au Chocolat!"

'Monday market day'
"On arrival Malestroit has supermarkets with everything you need. For something more local and early in the week, try the Monday market at Questembert (30 mins) for fresh local produce including fish - enjoy a drink or lunch in one of the many cafes. The market is housed in and around a medieval market hall. "
