Owners Recommendations
Eating Out
'Auberge Reine de Sicile'
"For a very special occasion visit 71 Rue Waldeck-Rousseau, Saumur. This very special restaurant offers the best of French cuisine in one of the oldest buildings in Saumur. Completely hidden away from the tourist trail, this bourgeois restaurant will provide a touch of class. Book in advance."
'L'Amuse Bouche '
"For a meal to remember or for a special occasion visit the highly recommended L'Amuse Bouche, 512 Route Montsoreau, Dampierre-sur-Loire, situated on the main road to Montsoreau, heading away from Saumur centre. This restaurant is relatively small but offers a gastronomic feast! Tables must be booked in advance to avoid disappointment. Prepare yourself for a full evening of endless different courses - ensure that you are not in any rush and that you are very hungry!"
'Le Burdigala'
"An excellent every day restaurant that can be found in St Pierre Square in the centre of Saumur. The restaurant is small but excellent value. Try the lunch time menu."
Local Area and Activities
'Chateau de Chenonceau'
"Quite simply the best chateau in the Loire (1 hour drive). The lovely surroundings, the formal garden and the park surrounding it, add to the impression of delicate grace emanating from the castle. Chenonceau is not only remarkable for its architecture and history but also for the fine quality of its collections, as can be seen from the inside visit, Renaissance furniture, a vast ensemble of XVIth and XVIIth century tapestries and a great number of masterpieces. The tour is led by personal Ipod audio - very impressive."
'Gratien and Meyer'
"This is an absolute must see and not only because our cottage in the 18th and 19th centuries was owned by Gratien and Meyer for its employees! Gratien and Meyer provide daily tours of their extensive caves, explaining how wine is made and at the end you are able to sample as much or as little as you would like! Staff are extremely friendly and speak excellent English."
'Montsoreau Chateau'
"This chateau is located in the next village, approximately 5 minutes drive from Saumur. You are able to wander through the vast rooms within the chateau, learning about the history of the Loire and how it brought trade and prosperity to the area throughout the ages. At the end, you are again able to sample some of the excellent wines from the region. Well worth a visit!!"
'Usse'
"The hateau at Usse is very picturesque and is where the legend 'The Sleeping Beauty' originates from. If you have children, they will love to walk around the chateau tower where the displays reinact the fairy tale. Be careful though if you are afraid of heights - not for the faint hearted!!"
Markets and Shopping
'Saumur Saturday Market'
"The Saturday morning market is a must see, where the vast majority of the town centre is taken over by stalls selling local cheese, cooked meats, vegetables, cakes and pastries, clothing, flowers, livestock and if you are lucky, mulled wine!!"
