The alluvial plains of the Tarn et Garonne rivers, fed by the River Aveyron, form the heart of the department of Tarn and Garonne. Northwards, the slopes in old 'Bas Quercy' reveal woods and orchards, valleys growing cereals, sunflowers and vines which produce the ancient white Chasselas dessert grape. To the south rise the Pyrenean foothills.
Today the pace of life in Tarn et Garonne is slow and gentle but the many Bastide villages, so typical of the region, are evidence of a more turbulent past.
