The River Charente, called by Francois I 'the most beautiful stream in the kingdom', is crystal clear and can be fished for a wide variety of species. Here you will find wild river carp, so you will need the right equipment. Other fish in the river are bream, perch, pike, roach and bleak; even mullet swim upstream from the sea and shad arrive in the summer for breeding. The River Vienne, a tributary of the Loire, can be fished for trout, pike and perch and the Lacs de Haute Charente provide 400 hectares of freshwater lakes with carp, pike, perch, zander, black bass and tench on the fishing menu. Don't forget your licence - buy from the local tabac, Post Office or tackle shop.
