Ille et Vilaine is a beautiful area of France with a rich history that can be seen in medieval architecture. The quaint half timbered houses of Vitre mean it is considered amongst the prettiest medieval towns in Brittany and the vast Fougeres Chateau is the largest medieval castle in Europe.
Gites in Ille et Vilaine are also within easy reach of many sandy, safe beaches ideal for a day of relaxing in the sun or taking to the waves by taking a windsurf, kayak, pedalo or boat trip.
It's well worth making an excursion to Rennes, this cosmopolitan city is the capital of Brittany and is packed with shops, restaurants, museums and gardens including Thabor with its bandstand and aviaries and Oberther with its ornamental lake. Visit on a Saturday morning so you can browse one of the biggest markets in France that takes place each week in Les Halles Martenot. Over 300 producers from across Brittany attend to sell everything from apples and cider to shellfish, chicken and butter – a spectacle not to be missed!
