Gites in Maine et Loire are an ideal base to explore the architectural heritage of the region. There is everything from Neolithic burial chambers at Bagneux and a Roman amphitheatre at Gennes to the many beautiful chateaux. Chateau de Montgeoffrey, an elegant 18th century palace near Angers with an impressive display of carriages in the stable block, and the 15th century Chateau de Plessis-Boure complete with moat and drawbridges in particular are well worth a visit. Maine et Loire offers plenty for the discerning diner with outstanding Saumur wines, locally cultivated mushrooms of all kinds, soft fruit and asparagus. It is also the home of Cointreau the well-known orange liqueur created by the Cointreau brothers here in 1849.
