Le Four a Sel is a beautiful riverside property comprising 3 separate holiday homes sleeping 15, 8 and 5 . You can rent the 3 houses individually or rent them together to sleep up to 30 guests. Villa Orchidee ,the largest house has 6 en suite bedrooms suitable for 3/4 families to share or 5 couples wishing to holiday together. Excellently located,5 minutes to amenities and the famous Lascaux prehistoric Caves in Montignac, 30 minutes away from tourist sites. Enjoy a peaceful and relaxing holiday ,a stunning riverside setting with fabulous views, tons of green space and onsite facilities for all ages, no need to go sightseeing everyday: pool, picnics and bbqs by the river, Football and badminton in an outdoor playground with swings, slides and a climbing frame, table tennis in a covered play area, boules/petanque in the large 350 sqm courtyard, free wi-fi, lots of parking, al fresco dining whatever the weather and unlimited private fishing from dawn to dusk on your doorstep!

You can walk to a bar/restaurant where you can buy fresh baked croissants and baguettes to enjoy an al fresco breakfast in the covered terrace just outside the house.
Accommodation comprises:
* 2 triple rooms ,with a double bed and a single bed
* 2 double rooms , with a double bed
*A family suite: consisting of 2 rooms that interconnect.
All rooms are en suite.There is a 7th bedroom with a double bed ,no private bathroom which is available on request for a small supplement.
Large open plan dining room/lounge can seat up to 30 guests! There is a flat screen tv, with English satellite or French channels , a 3 seater settee and an armchair . All rooms have electric heaters and there is a wood burner stove for the cooler months.
The spacious kitchen is fully equipped with 2 fridges, microwave, 5ring gas stove with large oven, toaster, coffee maker and lots of dinner ware, crockery, pots and pans . Outside, the covered terrace has table and chairs for al fresco dining and BBq's whatever the weather and a seating area where you can relax while you watch your children play table tennis in the covered play area just opposite.

The area around the houses, child proof swimming pool and garden is fenced to keep the children safe.The shared pool is also fenced and alarmed .
We have 2 other houses: Villa Hibiscus, ref: AD003240, which sleeps 8 and has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a cottage, Villa Mimosa, which has 2 bedrooms ,sleeps 5 guests. If Villa Orchidee is not available, the option is to rent these 2 other houses as they can sleep 13 guests. This rural retreat is an ideal group accommodation for large gatherings like birthdays, family reunions or other special events.
A 30% deposit is required to confirm the booking(if renting one house) and the balance is due 12 weeks before arrival . If renting 2 or 3 gites, a 35% deposit is required and the balance is due 16 weeks before arrival. There is an end of stay cleaning charge payable on arrival and a security deposit required 4 weeks before arrival.



Kitchen and dining

The kitchen is fully equipped with dinnerware, pots and pans, crockery to cater for a large group and all the mod cons to make your stay comfortable: dishwasher, toaster, microwave, kettle, fridge-freezer. There are 2 washing machines in the courtyard for guests to use.

Living rooms

Large open plan living room with comfortable 3 seater settee, armchair, a flat screen tv with English satellite channels or French channels, dvd player, selection of books, and a wood burner stove for the cooler months, making it suitable for rental all year round.


The bedrooms are on the ground floor and first floor.
Two of the rooms have an external entrance, direct to the courtyard.


5 bathrooms with shower, toilet and washbasin.


All bedrooms have electric heaters. There is a woodburner stove in the lounge which is very efficient as it heats up the entire house. A heating supplement applies from October - end of April.


Tv (with English satellite channels) dvd player,

Table tennis is available in the covered play area outside when you step out of the front door.
Large 340 square meter courtyard where you can enjoy the popular french game of Boules or Petanque, and Badminton.

Outdoor playground with swings, slide, a football area, with football net, badminton net, and a climbing framelarge 350 square meter courtyard for endless games of boules and badminton.
Private onsite fishing on almost half a kilometer of our river frontage where you can catch salmon, carp and barbel amongst others.

There are benches and outdoor tables and chairs in many areas all over the property where one can just sit and relax and get away from it all. Have a picnic or bbq beside the river without leaving the property!

Garden and outside

Large garden with 2 orchards containing fruit trees that provide natural shade as well as fruits of the season that guests can help themselves to: apple, pears, figs, plums, hazelnuts, walnuts chestnuts. Outdoor table and chairs for al fresco dining, bbqs.
30 meters away is the swimming pool which is fenced and alarmed for safety.

Lots of parking for at least 12 cars and more.

Visitor suitability

Family, children of all ages, couples only. The 3 houses when rented together can accommodate up to 30, ideal for large groups.

We first came to Montignac in 2001 for our family holiday and the kids loved it so much we came back every year for 7 years, then decided to make Le Four our Sel our home.

Why this location? We love its peaceful location , being beside the river, the vast amount of greenspace and, yet easily accessible to shops and activities. The scenery and surrounding countryside even after 17 years of being here still takes our breath away - it's stunning, interesting (not flat but undulating) , lush and we continue to discover something new and different everytime.
Montignac is a lovely town, with its pretty riverside cafes & restaurants, and 2x weekly market.The nearby towns and villages like Sarlat and Terrasson offer additional choices-just 15-25 minutes away.Lots of village fetes, brocantes day & night markets so much to see and do and many activities like open air concerts are free during the summer.

Location setting for films like Joan of Arc and Chocolat, this beautiful Chateau was once under the siege of Richard the Lionheart .Perched on a cliff, providing one the most amazing 360 degree panoramic views.

Caves of Lascaux

One of France's most important prehistoric sites , the walls hold Beautifully subtle paintings and engravings of animals (15,000 renderings) , sophisticated artwork painted by prehistoric man 20,000 years ago. The original cave was discovered by chance in 1940 by 4 teenagers.


Superbly preserved Bastide town with rambling streets and fortified gateways in the town walls. Situated high above the river with breathtaking views of the Dordogne river and valley enjoyed from the viewpoint. Underneath the market square is a cave with stalagmites and stalactites.

La Roque Gageac

Has a most dramatic setting, and is featured in the Dordogne's postcards. Situated right beside the river, with many of its houses built directly into the face of the huge cliff that overhangs the village. Above this there are steep steps to incredible troglodyte caves with great views.


Well restored and most famous medieval town in the Dordogne with golden-ochre stone houses, a maze of narrow lanes and cobbled streets, its lively Saturday market must not be missed. During the summer, the town square is alive in the evening with an array of clowns, bands, and other street performers.

Suspended Gardens of Marqueyssac

The most visited garden of the Perigord (Dordogne) and is a listed national historic monument. It is one of a few gardens worth visiting with children. During the summer, each Thursday evening, the gardens are lit by candlelight and various musicians and performers playing in different parts of the garden.
