About this property

Beautiful Converted Barn in Peaceful Setting. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Not far from the famous NW Dordogne town of Brantome, is the small village of St. Just, and here a quiet lane leads to the 5 houses of La Roche Chabrelle. Our home, 'Chez Hodgkiss', is the last building before the lane becomes a track. The quiet hamlet is in an elevated position overlooking woods and farmland, with gentle walks all around.

'Chez Hodgkiss' comprises of our old farmhouse and the barn, which has been lovingly converted into a good sized two bedroom Gite, with a wealth of exposed stone walls, oak floors, and rustic beams. Decoration and furnishings have been chosen to provide comfort and convenience for our guests.

A  pool and sun terrace are situated away from the buildings for privacy and quiet and give views across the valley.

The post van is the total passing traffic, however we are not remote, being within easy reach of La Tour Blanche, Riberac, and Brantome with nearby shops and restaurants.

Here is a place for relaxing and enjoying your home away from home, and as a base for exploring the surrounding area, either by foot, bike or car.

The Owner Recommends

Brantome town

Called the Venice of Dordogne this beautiful old town sits mainly on an island in the river Dronne. Enjoy a river trip, browse the shops or view the old buildings. There is something for everyone here and a large choice of good restaurants to dine out in.

Bourdeilles.

A local village on the river Dronne, with old castle and chateau to visit, hire a canoe, or stroll the lanes, then enjoy a relaxed meal in the many restaurants.

Perigueux

The regional capital of Perigueux has a fascinating old quarter with shops and restaurants in abundance in its narrow streets and squares.

Riberac.

A short drive away is the market town of Riberac with its famous Friday market, All the bustle of a busy french market with lots of cafes to enjoy a coffee and a patisserie, and to people watch to your hearts content.

Aubeterre.

A few miles west of Riberac this little hill town has delightful squares and streets to explore and a fantastic monolith church cut out of the solid rock, also there is a river beach with swimming, and canoes to hire.

Lake Jameye

Not far from Riberac there are the lakes at Jameye where the swimming beach has resident life guards through the summer. Canoes are available free of charge, or enjoy a delightful walk through the trees around the lake. Restaurants and cafes are open most of the summer.

Eating Out

We prefer to recommend restaurants personally, when you are here, as we find they do vary from time to time as chefs and owners change.

Whatever your idea of walking is, we are sure you will find something to enjoy locally.
We have available maps of way-marked walks around about us, and in fact one passes your front door.
So whether it is a 20 minute gentle stroll, or a few hours hike you will find something to suit.

Trevor and Chris are the ideal hosts!

Although they live 'next door', we hardly saw them but knew that they were there if we needed them. More like neighbours! Nice little touch with a bottle of wine on arrival and a bottle of water and milk in the fridge!

The online photos don't do the property justice and it is clear that Trevor and Chris take a great deal of pride in what they have created from a derelict building or two.
The accommodation is superb with tasteful décor and all the home from home amenities that you would need.

There are board games (Monopoly, Cluedo etc), books, DVD player and a flat screen TV with English channels.

One spacious double bedroom and an equally as spacious bedroom with two single beds.
Good sized bathroom with WC, basin a walk in shower and a washing machine that we used during our week there.

From the living area there are French windows opening out to a shaded and decked dining area and a mobile BBQ over looking the extensive gardens.

A 20 yard skip to a fenced & gated pool with sunbeds and 4 umbrellas for shade. The pool over looks the local farmer's corn fields and butterflies are abundant.

Next to the pool there is a summer house that holds inflatables for the pool, pedal bikes and swing ball.

The great thing is that the pool is exclusive to the guests.

If you want peace, quiet and solitude then this is the place for you but there is plenty to do in the area if you are prepared to drive a little. 5 STARS!

My wife and I have stayed in the Barn Gite four years running and I would think that the row of perfect tens above says it all. We saw the property in it's pre completion stages and have been lucky enough to see the love and skill that The owners have put into the conversion. We are unable to find one thing to complain about.
As an artist the surrounding area and villages are just a dream and I could not have wished for anything better!

A wonderful Gite with the most lovely owner. We travelled with our young daughter and the Gite was great and she loved the pool. If your looking for a relaxed chilled holiday this is the place. The old features of the barn and the log burner make this a relaxing perfect place to stay. The area is full of great things to do and see but like us you can just chill by the pool and cook your self a bbq. Just amazing

A beautifully restored barn in a relaxing and secluded location.

The Gite was really lovely and had been furnished with everything you could want for a relaxing stay, something that is not always the case with self catering properties, and makes a big difference.

Trevor and Christine were really helpful and made us feel more like guests than customers.

We will be returning again and would recommend Chez Hodgkiss to anyone.
