The Owner Recommends

Brantome town

Called the Venice of Dordogne this beautiful old town sits mainly on an island in the river Dronne. Enjoy a river trip, browse the shops or view the old buildings. There is something for everyone here and a large choice of good restaurants to dine out in.

A local village on the river Dronne, with old castle and chateau to visit, hire a canoe, or stroll the lanes, then enjoy a relaxed meal in the many restaurants.

The regional capital of Perigueux has a fascinating old quarter with shops and restaurants in abundance in its narrow streets and squares.

A short drive away is the market town of Riberac with its famous Friday market, All the bustle of a busy french market with lots of cafes to enjoy a coffee and a patisserie, and to people watch to your hearts content.

A few miles west of Riberac this little hill town has delightful squares and streets to explore and a fantastic monolith church cut out of the solid rock, also there is a river beach with swimming, and canoes to hire.

Lake Jameye

Not far from Riberac there are the lakes at Jameye where the swimming beach has resident life guards through the summer. Canoes are available free of charge, or enjoy a delightful walk through the trees around the lake. Restaurants and cafes are open most of the summer.

Eating Out

We prefer to recommend restaurants personally, when you are here, as we find they do vary from time to time as chefs and owners change.

Whatever your idea of walking is, we are sure you will find something to enjoy locally.
We have available maps of way-marked walks around about us, and in fact one passes your front door.
So whether it is a 20 minute gentle stroll, or a few hours hike you will find something to suit.

Bike rides.

We have a couple of bikes our guests may borrow, or we can arrange bike hire from a local company. There are plenty of quiet roads and tracks to explore.

A wonderful Gite with the most lovely owner. We travelled with our young daughter and the Gite was great and she loved the pool. If your looking for a relaxed chilled holiday this is the place. The old features of the barn and the log burner make this a relaxing perfect place to stay. The area is full of great things to do and see but like us you can just chill by the pool and cook your self a bbq. Just amazing

A beautifully restored barn in a relaxing and secluded location.

The Gite was really lovely and had been furnished with everything you could want for a relaxing stay, something that is not always the case with self catering properties, and makes a big difference.

Trevor and Christine were really helpful and made us feel more like guests than customers.

We will be returning again and would recommend Chez Hodgkiss to anyone.

This was our second visit to Chez Hodgkiss and it did not disappoint. We stayed in The Barn this time and profited from the extra space on offer, even although there were only two of us. The house lacks nothing; every conceivable utensil and or equipment is provided to ensure a home from home feeling. It does not lack storage or cupboard space either, so you are not tripping over your own luggage all fortnight. Holiday accommodation can sometimes give the impression that it has been furnished and/or equipped with leftover bits and pieces, none of which match. Not so this place; it is clear that much thought has gone into what is there and it is all maintained to a high standard.
Chris and Trevor are great company and are on hand to help where needed, but leave you to enjoy your holiday.
Two consecutive visits speak for themselves; my advice would be book now while stocks last!

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Chez Hodgkiss. Our hosts were very helpful from the moment of booking until the moment we drove away. Early on in the process they quickly and clearly responded to all enquiries about the property. They were welcoming an available but not the slightest bit intrusive. The property was beautiful and the setting perfect, full of privacy but not too far away from interesting sites. We happily enjoyed nights in front of the television (we don't have a TV at home so this was a welcome and guilt-free addition to our "week away") and days driving from castle to castle. We recommend this property full-heartedly and are already dreaming of when we can stay again.
