We were both born in Leicester, England. We met in 1976, when Paul was a graphic designer, Philippa was a secretary. We moved to Leeds for Paul's work, Philippa trained and qualified as a nurse. We have two married daughters, Charlotte and Nicola. In 2008 we took a gap-year to go travelling. In 2009 we worked as couriers for Eurocamp on Elba. We did the same job in 2010 on a campsite in the Dordogne and found our property, quite by chance, on the internet. Time for a new chapter in our lives!
|Year property purchased||2010|
|Why this location?||During our family holidays in the Dordogne we loved the area so much we said we would love to live and work here. We never dreamed that it would become a reality.
There is spectacular scenery around every corner. The colour of the stone buildings is warm and sunny. There are so many places to visit and things to do that it will keep you busy, or entertained, for as long as you like.
Castles, such as Beynac on the side of the Dordogne river. Chateaux, such as Castelnaud and de Losse. Caves with the original cave paintings, such as Font de Gaume, or the world famous Roque Saint Christophe opposite our property, where cavemen lived. Gardens, such as Marqueyssac which has panoramic views across the Dordogne river and valley.
Go canoeing, walking, cycling, bird watching or just sit and relax. Enjoy a quiet picnic, wander around the beautiful villages, visit the fabulous markets.
Restaurants galore where you can eat delicious duck meals.
|Unique benefits of property||Our property consists of one large 6 bedroom house, one large gite (Tobacco Barn) with three bedrooms and three smaller gites (Haybarn, Roque Terrace and Walnut Store) each with one bedroom. One of the unique aspects of our properties is that all our bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms.
The house can be rented on its own or in combination with one or more of the smaller gites, giving our property the flexibility to suit a couple, a family or a large group.
With two swimming pools and plenty of outdoor space, patios and terraces for outside eating, you can enjoy the sun from morning till night.
When the house is rented on its own, it has its own private gardens, pool and space. The four smaller gites are separate with their own swimming pool.
The Walnut Store and Roque Terrace are suitable for people who use a wheelchair and for those with impaired mobility. They each have a lovely, large, wet-room style shower room.
Paul and Philippa live on site so are always on hand to help.
The amazing new replica of Lascaux caves. Bigger and better than anything we've had before! Using new technology this visit is more interactive than the previous Lascaux II. Book online at www.lascaux.fr
The new building has been made to blend into its surroundings and is fully wheelchair accessible.
Children will love it too!
Set on a plateau overlooking the Dordogne river and valley, these gardens are a great place to visit for gardeners and the whole family. Children will love running through the parkland and playing in the play areas. During the summer there are candlelit evenings with music; take a picnic and enjoy a new experience. www.marqueyssac.com
Beautiful gardens with views. A lovely visit for people who are gardeners. www.eyrignac.co.uk
Situated just across the valley from our property. Excellent for all the family. Pre-history at its best. http://www.roque-st-christophe.com/?lang=en
Experience the world of cavemen. How they lived, where they lived, a fascinating insight into their lives.
One of Frances' top 100 villages. Beautiful, calm, quaint, set at the side of the river Vezere. Sit and watch the canoes go past while you enjoy a beer, glass of wine or a picnic lunch.
This is a lovely 'theme' park. It has something for everyone. http://www.lebournat.fr/en/index.php
Craftsmen, animals, a fairground, restaurants.
Perfect for children but adults will enjoy it too!
Highly recommended by all our visitors but beware, there is a torture chamber!!
Sarlat is just 30 minutes drive from our property and is completely beautiful. A medieval town which has retained its wonderful buildings and ambience. The Saturday market is world renowned and, as such, gets very busy which adds to the pleasure. Get there early during July and August, have breakfast in one of the lovely cafes, indulge in the wonderful items and foods on sale, then come back and put them on the BBQ.
Lascaux II has been superseded by Lascaux 4.
Based in Montignac, this is the site of the cave paintings discovered 70 years ago by a group of young boys.
Lascaux 4 will open in the autumn of 2016
We stayed in the Tabacco Barn where there are 3 bedrooms, plenty of space for our family. The gite was clean, comfy and perfect for our 10 days holiday by the Vezere river.
Paul and Philippa were always on hand to help if we needed it and have fantastic knowledge of the local area; restaurants, supermarkets, places to visit, local walking and cycle routes and local amenities.
Les Manior sits in a beautiful spot, overlooking La Roque Saint-Christophe, which is lit up at night. We sat out every evening and listened to the wildlife. Heaven!
We will definitely be going back for our next trip to France.
Thank you Charlotte for your lovely comments. We are happy to know that you enjoyed your stay. We were delighted to meet your little boy and we’re glad that the baby equipment and swimming pool toys were useful. We will look forward to welcoming you back.
