Clos Esperance is a traditional Perigourdine house dating from 1701, with attached barn, in a sleepy hamlet near the bustling town of Thiviers. It has just under an acre of gardens and a 12 x 5m heated swimming pool (mid May to late September). The house is on a no-through lane and so the daily post van is about the only traffic we see.
The house has been recently renovated and is comfortably furnished and decorated in neutral colours. It sleeps six in three bedrooms, one of which is on the ground floor. The downstairs bedroom has an en-suite shower room and there is a further bath and shower room upstairs, as well as two separate wcs. There is full central heating for spring/autumn stays, and a large log-burning stove. We have retained the traditional features such as the terracotta tiles in the living room and the oak floors in the bedrooms, as well as the original beams, while installing a modern kitchen and new bathrooms. All three bedrooms have an insect blind at the window.
We remember how complicated it used to be sometimes travelling with our children when they were tiny, so we can provide a travel cot (please bring your own bedding), high chair, baby bath, bed rail, blackout blind, non-slip bath and shower mats and a step to reach the wash-hand basins. We also have plastic plates, bowls, cups and cutlery which can be used for picnics if not needed for younger guests.
We have tried to think of everything you will need for a lovely holiday. All linen and towels (plus swimming towels) are included in the price, and we provide a welcome pack to start you off. Each bedroom has a hairdryer.
The house is non-smoking and we do not accept pets. Please do contact us with any questions you may have and to confirm availability before you book.
The large kitchen diner is fully equipped with oven, hob, microwave, fridge freezer, toaster, coffee makers, washing machine and everything you will need to rustle up delicious meals. There is also a dishwasher, because who wants to be doing the washing-up on holiday?
The living room has two large sofas and an armchair, a television, dvd player (plus a selection of dvds) British and French tv channels, board games and lots of books for adults and children.
The ground floor bedroom has a kingsized double bed and an ensuite shower room.
On the first floor there is a further kingsized double room and a twin room with full size single beds.
The downstairs bedroom has an en suite shower room and wc. The main bath/shower room is upstairs.
There is also a separate wc upstairs and a separate downstairs wc.
The house has full gas-fired central heating which is nice for spring/autumn stays, and a large log-burner in the living room.
As well as the tv and dvd player, we have a sound dock so that you can plug you own music in, board games and badminton, table tennis, darts and boules.
The house sits in a garden of just under one acre, mainly laid to grass with a number of mature trees. We have a table tennis table in the barn, plus boules and a badminton set for use in the garden.
The main attraction is the 12 x 5m heated swimming pool, which is open from mid May to late September (if you are booking for September, do check with us whether the pool will be available).
There is a barbecue outside the barn and a wooden table, chairs and large parasols for al fresco dining.
The terrace by the pool is in sun all day and has six wooden sunloungers with cushions.
There is plenty of parking in front of the house (still leaving space for a game of boules).
There are steps leading up to the front door, but once inside there is just one small step up to the downstairs bedroom.
The pool is alarmed for the protection of small children.
We both love France, having been on family holidays when we were growing up, and taking our own daughters on holiday once we got married and had a family of our own. We finally took the plunge and organised a house-hunting trip in late 2011. We both knew as soon as we saw Clos Esperance that this was 'the one', and the house was ours in March 2012. We put the pool in and renovated the house from top to bottom, keeping the traditional features and updating the kitchen and bathrooms.

|Why this location?||We live in London so we wanted somewhere really peaceful where we could see the stars at night and hear the birds. But we didn't want to have to drive for ages to buy bread and milk. Curmont is a small hamlet on a no-through lane so we have all the peace we want, but just a five-minute drive to shops and restaurants in Thiviers and nearby.|
|Unique benefits of property||We love the pool and the peace. We also love being so close to St Jean de Cole, Brantome, Perigueux and all the other sites in the Dordogne region. We provide a full pack of ideas for local things to do and sites to see, as well as recommendations for local restaurants.|
Located close to Brantome, Jumilhac le Grand and Perigueux and just 4km from the fortified market town of Thiviers, Clos Esperance is an ideal base for exploring the whole of the Dordogne or just relaxing by the pool. The Périgord Vert is famous for its beautiful countryside, pretty villages, stunning châteaux and prehistoric caves - all of which you can discover as you explore the region. Within easy reach are the historic towns of Brantôme, Périgueux and St. Jean De Côle - which holds the official accolade of being one of the ‘prettiest villages in France’. The Périgord-Limousin Natural Park provides a hilly, but not mountainous, landscape which is ideal for walking, cycling and horse riding. It is also home to a host of wild animals and rare birds. The 4 rivers which cross the region provide for excellent canoeing and fishing. Nearby inland beaches offer water activities. The Dordogne is renowned as the gastronomic centre of France and the Périgord Vert, in particular, is rich in local produce including truffles, foie gras, duck & goose, walnuts and, of course, escargots! These can be bought in the weekly local markets or enjoyed in the many superb restaurants nearby. Excellent road links from Thiviers make Clos Esperance an ideal base for exploring all of the attractions of the Dordogne and Limousin. The medieval town of Sarlat, prehistoric caves at Lascaux, the vineyards in St Emillion and Bordeaux and the poignant ‘Village of the Martyrs’ near Limoges are all within easy day-trip distance. We provide a pack of information about local facilities, visitor attractions and restaurants
After a few years of finding poor accommodation, it was with caution that we booked Clos Esperance. However we need not have been concerned it was as good as we had hoped and suited our mixed age and relationship group perfectly. Lovely house, spotlessly clean and in a lovely quiet area. The very large pool was even warm enough for me. We have already booked again for next year.
We're so glad you had a good holiday, Nick, and we're looking forward to having you back again next summer.
We were looking for a quiet comfortable place we could relax and get away from it, and Close Esperance was pretty much perfect.
The property is very private, and set in extensive well maintained grounds with a super swimming pool, barbecue, and plenty of room for boules and badminton.
The house itself was very clean on arrival, tastefully furnished throughout and extremely well equipped with everything you could need for your stay.
Directions were accurate, the house was easy to find and there was a thoughtful welcome pack of essentials when we arrived.
Communications with the owner throughout were friendly and helpful.
We did not explore the local area but there is loads to do. However everything is a car journey away. Nearest shops and amenities are 10 mins away in Thiviers.
Would definitely recommend this and hope to return ourselves.
Thank you Ed, we're so glad you had a relaxing stay. It would be a pleasure to have you back again some time in the future.
We have just returned from our third year stay at Clos Esperance. The house is absolutely beautiful, situated in a secluded and peaceful setting with wonderful views across oss the valley. The house is shown as the pictures, however what the website can’t detail is the immaculate cleanliness and how well managed the property is. Everything has been thought of for a very comfortable home-from-home stay. Our 7 year old daughter absolutely loves coming and especially the gardens and pool, which are all beautifully presented, incredibly clean and heated. We have been holiday’ing in the Dordorgne for many years and this is by far the best property we have stayed in, hence why we have returned for three years running and have already booked for next year!
Clos Esperance is also ideally positioned to enjoy the many tourist attractions, from
The beautiful Chateaus in Sarlat (about an hour away), to a more local lazy lunch by the river in Brantonne or enjoying the pretty gardens at Erignac et ses Jardins. You can also hire canoes at Brantonne and navigate down the river (to the delight of everyone watching you!) - good fun! Or for steaming hot days just relaxing by the pool.
A special thank you to Wendy & Matt for continuing to provide such a wonderful house for our family memories. We can’t wait for next year!
Dear Julia, thank you so much for your lovely comments. It's been an absolute pleasure having you and your family staying at Clos Esperance and we are delighted that you are coming back again next year.
Clos Esperance is a charming, comfortable and well equipped house in a tranquil setting. All the rooms were very comfortable and spotlessly clean.
The owners were extremely helpful and efficient with arrangements and information about the property.
We would like to return and thoroughly recommend the property especially for those seeking peace and quiet!
Thank you for your kind comments - we're so glad you had a good holiday and would be delighted to welcome you back.
