About this property

Maison de Maitre In Lovely Dordogne Countryside. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Les Versannes is a Maison de Maitre consisting of 3 bedrooms. In all it is configured to sleep 6 people with the space and privacy not catered for in many holiday homes.

The house has a large kitchen with a table large enough to seat 10. Crossing the entrance hall takes you to the large lounge with its comfortable seating and imposing fireplace. Through the lounge is the private stairway to the master bedroom. That has a king-size bed and an en suite bathroom. Patio doors open to the veranda offering amazing views of Cherval and beyond. Being west facing the veranda takes in stunning sunsets. Back in the house, the stairs from the entrance hall lead to a landing giving access to the other 2 bedrooms. One is a double and the other can be configured as a twin or super-king. These bedrooms share a shower and toilet in a Jack-and-Jill set-up (a door to each bedroom).

From the entrance hall, under the stairs (mind your head as the stairs are lower than a normal door height) is the way to another bathroom, the cellar and the large utility room. This contains a washing machine, dryer and drinks fridge. This room also leads the way to a double garage; useful for storing your bikes or motorbike, or even a car!

From the rear of the kitchen is a patio area with a retractable canopy. Being west facing this area is ideal for taking evening meals in the setting sun. External stairs to the main bedroom veranda enable you to quickly catch the last rays as the sun disappears over the horizon.

The house sits in about half an acre of enclosed garden for children to play in. The grounds also offer parking for many cars.

The property is the ideal location for extended families taking a holiday together but retaining some privacy when wanted.

Kitchen and dining

The kitchen has a fridge, oven, hob, microwave, and dishwasher. There is a vast selection of pots, pans, crockery and cutlery. The kitchen knives are new and are very sharp. As mentioned previously the table is big enough to seat 10. As an example of the scope of the kitchen, on New Year's Day, 12 of us sat down to a roast dinner.

There is a high chair available for babies and toddlers.

Living rooms

The lounge is split level with the main part holding a suite of a 3 seater sofa and 2 x 2 seater sofas. These are arranged in a sociable U shape focusing on the fireplace. The lower level has a small table with chairs and a selection of books and games.

One king-size with en suite.
One double and one twin/super-king sharing a Jack-and-Jill shower/toilet.
All 3 bedrooms have plenty of space for a cot but only one is provided in the property.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Darren Shepherd

We are Jane and Shep from Shropshire in central England. For many years we have wanted to live in France and buying Les Versannes is our first step towards that goal. Family and work commitments mean we have to live in England for now but ultimately we will move permanently to Cherval.

Year property purchased 2016
Why this location? Having taken several holidays in Dordogne over the years our initial property search was within 1 hour of Bergerac. We settled on Cherval because of the beautiful scenery within easy reach of airports at Bergerac, Bordeaux and Limoges. For those who prefer to drive (including Shep) it is an easy 6 hour drive from Caen or St Malo. Although we were not familiar with Cherval before buying the house, we consider ourselves lucky to have stumbled upon a lovely picturesque and friendly village.
Unique benefits of property Les Versannes is a spacious Maison de Maitre with a total of 5 bedrooms. The huge master bedroom is the jewel in the crown, having its own veranda with views over Cherval and beyond. The sunsets from the veranda are stunning. The room is accessed by its own staircase and has an en-suite bathroom. Two more large bedrooms are found up the main stairs and share a shower and toilet. One room is a double while the other can be configured as a twin or super king. The ground floor has a large kitchen, large lounge and a utility room offering a washer and dryer. To the rear is a west facing patio area ideal for taking al fresco evening meals. The remaining 2 bedrooms, a double and a twin are in a self-contained annex to the side of the main house. Within the annex is a kitchen, bathroom, toilet and lounge. There are 2 double garages offering secure storage for guests' cycles and motorbikes. The property sits in about half an acre of enclosed garden.

The Owner Recommends

Bar Le Clin D'oeil

Very friendly bar situated in the centre of Cherval serving a vast array of drinks with a bar menu. Owned by a Dutch lady with a multi-national customer base, English is invariably spoken. Sit outside and watch the world go by in summer. In winter sit by the log-burner or play pool.

Boulangerie, Pâtisserie, Epicerie, Salon de Thé, Bakery

The village bakery in Cherval. A 10 minute walk or 2 minute drive from Les Versannes for your freshly baked morning croissants, pain au chocolat, baguette etc.

A beautiful town situated on a bend of the River Dronne. Lots to see, many small shops, and canoe hire in the main car park.

19 km south of Cherval is the town of Riberac. Behind its busy high street is the market square which holds a market every Friday morning. Across the high street, a cllimb up the Rue Notre Dame is worth taking to see the church.

Le Grand Etang de La Jemaye

Perfect swimming lake in a beautiful wooded setting. Lovely day out with a picnic or make use of the bar and restaurant.

À Table, La Lunaire

As seen on Channel 4's A New Life in the Sun, La Lunaire is a gite business with its restaurant À Table. Only 2 km from Les Versannes it is well worth a visit for lunch or dinner.

L'Ecole Restaurant, Vendoire

A delightful restaurant run by a Frenchman who speaks perfect English. Great food in an intimate atmosphere. Although we have not had the pleasure yet, the venue holds barbecues which are legendary.

After your meal Francois, the owner, is renown for pulling up a chair and chatting for a short while. At this time he usually brings a decanter of brandy, on the house, then leaves it at your table while he attends to his duties.

9.8 / 10 Callis Family 17 August, 2017

Our family, of 9 adults, had an amazing stay at Les Versannes. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area around Cherval and beyond.

This wonderful French house was equipped for all our needs ~ lots of plug converters dotted around, clean towels, an enormous washing room, stunning dining table that we all sat at comfortably, parking for several cars (we had 3 and still room for more). There was plenty of room outside for us all to sit out and enjoy the BBQ. There is a large lawn area where we enjoyed a game of badminton or two and many tournaments were had on the mini pool table. Standing on the large veranda, outside the master bedroom, was an almost nightly vigil as we watched the sun set over the fields and village of Cherval.

Darren, in the U.K., was always very helpful and reassuring right from the initial contact made for booking and was always at the end of the email when needed. Equally, Mel, in Cherval, was very helpful when we arrived and came mid stay to change our bed linen. She was also always available on the end of the phone if we needed her.

A car is essential for your stay here. Although you could walk to the village, about 10 mins, there isn't too much there. But other villages within 10/15 min drive have more shops/bars/restaurants available.

Oh..... mustn't forget the delightful welcome basket we had on our arrival too!

We had a fantastic stay and would love to go back. It was everything we could wish for on our French holiday.
