Go completely Dordogne in this renovated farmhouse from the 16th century which offers you 5-star discreet luxury and understated style, with 5 bedrooms (each with their own bathroom) and a fantastic summer kitchen which looks out over the private swimming pool, fields and woods.
Le Mas has thick stone walls, wooden beams and huge fireplaces. It has been completely renovated in 2016 by interior designer Joris van Grinsven who respected the history and character of the building but brought it into the 21st century.
The Times included Le Mas in their 50 Best French Holidays for 2019. We are delighted that Le Mas has been awarded 5 stars by the French Ministry of Tourism. There are only 17 other hotels and gites in the Dordogne with 5 stars. The classification is based on the facilities, space, state of the accommodation and information we offer guests. The Daily Telegraph has been to stay in order to review us and has awarded us 9/10, the highest mark they have given any hotel or holiday home in the Dordogne.
The large well-equipped kitchen (55m²) is the centre of the house, great for family meals where 12 people can sit comfortably around the table. The centuries-old larder and stone evier (basin) built into the exposed stone walls just add to the character of the kitchen. It is well-equipped with: a Smeg cooker with 5 gas burners and large electric oven; Samsung dishwasher and washing machine; a Siemens fridge-freezer; and a Nespresso machine and Aeroccino milk frother.
Opposite the kitchen is the covered summer kitchen (65m²). Originally a barn, it still retains the roof but is partly open on 3 sides, affording you shade and a cool breeze. There is a small kitchen area with sink, fridge and a Weber 3 burner gas barbecue (gas provided). A large dining table.
The living room has exposed beams, an enormous fireplace with a wood burner (wood provided) and doors leading outside to the pool and summer kitchen. There are 3 large comfortable sofas and plenty of games and books to enjoy. If you want to catch up on the news or watch a film there is a flat screen satellite tv with English channels. There is a portable speaker which you can hook your phone, tablet or laptop to via Bluetooth.
Two bedrooms are on the ground floor at opposite ends of the house, each with 2 single beds. One of these bedrooms is wheelchair accessible, as is the majority of the rest of the ground floor and outside area. The other 3 bedrooms are accessed via 2 staircases. The first staircase leads to a double-aspect bedroom and en suite bathroom with shower. The main staircase goes from the kitchen up to the 2large gabled master bedrooms (33m² and 23m²).
The master bedrooms have wooden floors, beautiful original beams and are light and bright. Windows have views to the fields and woods beyond, being the perfect lookout for deer, birds of prey and wild boars.
Each bedroom in both houses has an en suite bathroom with walk-in shower, sink, loo and heated towel rails. Two of the bedrooms in Le Mas also have a free-standing bath.
Le Mas has central heating and two huge fireplaces with wood burners in the kitchen and sitting room, with all the wood that you need provided.
In the summer, there are some simple tricks to keep the house cool, which we will show you. There are fans in all the bedrooms.
Outside there are games to play in the garden (table tennis, boules, swingball, badminton rackets and shuttlecocks, children’s croquet) and the pool to enjoy.
Inside there are books, games, dvds and flat-screen tv's with UK satellite channels.
The 9 x 4 metre pool has a deep and a shallow end, with steps down into the water for easy access (no awkward ladder). It’s positioned to take in the view over the fields and woods beyond, so lie back on the sun loungers and deck chairs and enjoy it! If you are seeking solitude there are several private spots in the garden.
The pool is not heated, and for that reason is closed from November to May.
There is a communal parking area with 5 spaces.
Le Mas is perfect for families of all ages and groups of friends.
"Le Mas & Le Mazet is a luxurious rural retreat for nature lovers, peace seekers and bon vivants"
We provide goose-down duvets in the double bedrooms, but there are also anti-allergy duvets available. All the bed linen is 100% Egyptian cotton, and the towels are also pure cotton. We provide towels for the pool. For longer stays the bed linen and towels are changed weekly.
To ensure you don’t have to bring too much with you, we provide 2 travelcots with mattresses, two highchairs in both the kitchen and summer kitchen, children’s cutlery, plates and bowls, anti-slip mats for the baths, electric socket protectors, and some books, indoor and outdoor games.
We can arrange for a private chef to cook for you at Le Mas. All the ingredients are sourced locally to create delicious French cuisine, which will be served and cleared up, leaving you to enjoy the evening. They can cater to any diet (vegetarian, gluten free etc.) and will agree the menu with you beforehand.
We also have a local artisan baker who can deliver every morning straight to your door.
We decided in 2015 to leave the beautiful city of Amsterdam and our careers and to move to the Dordogne - swopping one UNESCO World Heritage site for another! We converted a tobacco drying barn on the property into our own home and renovated Le Mas & Le Mazet, and are very proud of how beautiful and comfortable they have become. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

|Why this location?||When we drove up the long drive to Le Mas for the first time, we realised how special the place was and how amazing it could become. We love its history, character and charm and the beautiful countryside all around it, with all the wildlife, peace and tranquility it offers. This part of France is not only beautiful, but has exemplary food and wine, culture and history.
There is much to explore in the area. Markets selling local produce and antiques. Castles, churches and prehistoric caves, famous wineries, and restaurants serving the region’s specialities (such as truffles, duck and foie gras). There are stunning walks and cycle routes on the doorstep; canoeing, golf, horse riding. We are very happy to advise on what to do and where to go.
|Unique benefits of property||Le Mas has been awarded 5-stars by the Ministry of Tourism, a one of only 17 hotels or gites in the Dordogne. Le Mazet has been awarded 4-stars.
The Daily Telegraph has reviewed Le Mas & Le Mazet online with 9/10.
The setting is spectacular - approached down a long private drive through woods and fields, the houses sit on top of a hill overlooking the glorious Dordogne countryside, all the way to the 12th century village church, whose bells you can hear over the valley.
The houses are centuries-old and full of authentic charm, but have been completely renovated to bring them into the 21st century. Our guests all remark on the attention to detail and comfort afforded by the houses.
Hotel beds and Egyptian cotton sheets offer a good night's sleep.
We have a private chef who can cook a special menu at Le Mas for you, and a masseuse who can come and relax you.
There are no hidden charges and even the firewood and barbecue gas is included.
Every morning of the week there is a market to be found. Our favourite is the Sunday morning market in Issigeac - it's big, very French and has delicious local produce.
The Dordogne has 1,001 cháteaux, some of which you can visit. We love Biron, Castelnaud, Beynac and Milandes.
There are fantastic restaurants around us, from pizza places to Michelin starred restaurants. We have a list of recommendations to share with you.
Canoeing down the Dordogne river is a great way to experience this beautiful part of France, as is horse riding, walking and cycling. We have info on where to go and what to do.
