Hi, I'm Lorraine. My husband John and myself are originally from Scotland (Renfrewshire) and we moved to Meyrals at the end of summer 2017 after searching for our ideal French home for a few years. As a retired police officer and land-based college tutor I now enjoy a more relaxing lifestyle and am learning French.

Set in a quiet location just 2 minutes walk to the centre of a small, charming French village with a bar, restaurants and boulangerie and just a short drive to some of the most beautiful locations in the Perigord.|
This fabulous large village market is bursting with fresh and cooked food and vegetables and non food items. There is a focus on local wines and produce including foie gras, truffles and walnuts. There are also many cafes and restaurants well placed to offer you refreshment should you feel ravenous after doing your shopping. Lots of parking, cash dispensers and toilets nearby.
La Merenda is located a short walk from Gite Le Bois Vert in the village of Meyrals.
This unpretentious restaurant serves both locals and tourists to the area, and the food is cooked freshly from local ingredients (Try the veal with a bottle of Pecharmant wine). There is both indoor and veranda dining and if you simply want to sit and have a drink and watch the world go by, there is a bar tabac downstairs. They also do divine take away pizzas. Davide & Delphine both speak English if you are a little shy to speak French.
This Chateau which is just a few minutes drive from Gite Le Bois Vert is not usually open to the public, but the grounds are! And they are FREE! With large lawns, a water feature and ponds, a potager garden and small newly planted orchard they are ideal for a half day visit. For older children there is the fun of exploring the caves at the rear of the garden (perfectly safe and great fun). Great location for a picnic lunch or a half day filler. Located in the centre of the village of Campagne there is ample parking and a few restaurants.
Really fantastic displays in a cracking modern building set into the living rock in the centre of Les Eyzies. Free parking, toilets and an outdoor view of Les Eyzies from the third floor to take your breath away. Well worth an hour to 2 hours if you are into prehistory. FREE entry first Sunday of the month!
The medieval town of Sarlat is stuffed with streets and lanes full of wonderful shops and eateries. But Sarlat is world famous for its produce market. Every Saturday and Wednesday from 8.30am till around 2pm there are stalls and traders filling the centre of the old town with local delicacies, crafts and fruit, vegetables and wine. From mid June till mid September there is also a night market from 6pm till 10pm, with street entertainment for all the family.
Chateau de Beynac is perched on a hillside on the banks of the Dordogne. Well worth visiting for both the old town and the chateau, places to eat and drink. The chateau is open from 10am till 6.30pm and visiting will take about an hour. There is ample car parking at the chateau itself.
Only a half hour's drive away, Lascaux is a must visit if you are in the Dordogne. Open from 9am till 7.30pm, you can easily spend 2-3 hours here, looking at the replica of prehistoric art. The museum is always busy and internet booking is advised. Go for an English tour to get the most of your visit, unless you speak very good French. Not really suitable for kids under 5 years old. Great option for when the weather isnt perfect.
Hugging the banks of the Dordogne above a pretty little village is the Chateau de Castelnaud. Great if you like castles, medieval warfare etc. Great if you like pretty villages! Quite a steep walk and lots of steps, so if your unfit or have very young children this needs to be considered. Check their website, but they do swordfighting lessons for the kids, blacksmith demonstrations and trebuchet demonstrations from May onwards. Great views of Roque Gageac and the Dordogne river.
