About this property

Fabulous 2 Bedroom Gite with Pool, Edge of Village. This cottage/gite is in a village setting.

Gite Le Bois Vert is located in the small artists village of Meyrals, within the idyllic 'golden triangle' between Sarlat, Les Eyzies and Montignac in the south Dordogne area of South West France. The gite offers fantastic spacious 2 bedroom non smoking accommodation (sleeps 4 and a baby) with a beautiful large garden with completely refurbished large salt swimming pool (shared with our 1 bedroom gite La Petite Roseraie) and stone terrace.

Guests have use of the swimming pool from May 1st till end of September from 9am till dusk. There is also dedicated free private parking right outside the gite. It is a 2 minute stroll into the pretty village with its boulangerie, bar and restaurants. The medieval town of Sarlat is a pleasant 20 minute drive and we are ideally located to enjoy all the main tourist sites within a 30 minute drive from the gite. Just ask us to attach our FREE downloadable guide when you book.

The gite is well insulated, modern and benefits from double glazing and underfloor heating. The kitchen is well equipped with the bonus of a washing machine - always handy for family holidays. Bedrooms are light and airy with microfibre duvets and pillows and luxury cotton bedlinen supplied. There is a large bedroom with king size bed and a smaller twin bedded room. There is also a cot and a highchair provided for baby, (max occupancy is 4 plus a baby). Towels, including pool towels are supplied for your stay.

From the living room there are French doors leading to a small private terrace overlooking the pool and front lawns. Enjoy a meal al fresco at the outdoor dining set or simply sit with a glass of wine and enjoy the sunset or watch the stars in the evening. We provide you with a charcoal BBQ (fuel readily available at supermarkets), loungers, parasols and chairs and table outside.

The gite obviously appeals to families during the summer months looking for quieter more exclusive accommodation but is also ideal for couples wishing a little more space and to enjoy a large terrace overlooking the pool. We are busy in the months of May and June for walkers, photographers and bird watchers and again in September and October for wine lovers, deer watchers and in December for the food and truffle markets.

The owners, John and Lorraine live in the adjoining house and are discreetly available if required. The gite and grounds are non smoking and we do not allow pets at the gites.

We also have a one bedroom gite on site for couples or solo travellers - please look at our listing for La Petite Roseraie, property no AD006721. It is possible to book BOTH gites for multi generational bookings (ie family & grandparents) depending on availability.

Kitchen and dining

The spacious living area adjoins a well laid out modern kitchen and dining area. There is a table with four chairs, a cooker, sink, microwave, fridge with freezer compartment and washing machine, alongside the usual kettle and toaster. There are plenty of plates and cutlery and some plastic items for using near the pool. There are washing lines and pegs located on the top lawn to the rear of the house and an under cover washing line.

A highchair is available free of charge.

You may also choose to dine outside and there are tables and chairs provided and a barbeque for your use.

Living rooms

This self-contained ground floor gite has a spacious living area with woodburner for the colder months, colour tv (basic UK channels and French tv box), and free wi-fi. There is a bookcase with a selection of books in English and a basket with tourist information and maps of the area, and a few board games.

Recliner sofas and cosy throws allow you to relax indoors. There are patio doors leading out to the sun terrace and pool, with plenty of chairs, tables, umbrellas and a barbecue for your use.

If you book in low season, all wood is now included in the price.

Bedrooms

There is a spacious bedroom with king size bed and a smaller twin bedded room, ideal for children or other family members. A cot (suitable from birth to 2 years) with mattress is available - just ask (although we do ask that you bring your own cot bedding)!

We have provided microfibre soft touch duvets and pillows and all bed linen is cotton to ensure you have a comfortable, refreshing sleep. Plenty of storage for clothes and suitcases, a vacuum cleaner and ironing board and iron are also available. All bedding and towels are provided for your stay.

Bathrooms

There is a large family bathroom with bath with shower over, and a heated towel rail.
The bathroom is fully tiled with good vanity lighting.
Good quality towels, a bathmat and non slip mat for inside the bath are provided for your use.

Heating

We are a Planet Friendly gite! The gite is well insulated and fully double glazed and benefits from electric underfloor heating in the colder months. The heating is off from April through till mid September. The gite has a woodburner for use in the colder months, and will be supplied with fuel accordingly.

There is a massive HW tank providing enough very hot water for up to 2 large baths every day. There is also an electric towel rail in the bathroom.
The gite faces south and in the summer the shutters can be closed to block out the heat of the day. An electric fan has been provided for summer use.

We do not have and are not planning to install air-conditioning as this is against our Planet Friendly policy. To prevent the gite becoming uncomfortably warm close the shutters and windows at 10am and reopen at 8pm. This keeps the house cool during the day.

We have recently installed flyscreens to all windows in the gite.

Entertainment

The village has a weekly summer market (Thursday morning) and numerous events in July, August & September. There is also a GREAT year round Sunday market in St Cyprien; just a short drive away. There is a bar and a couple of restaurants in Meyrals village and plenty of of others in the area, including a large number of fine dining restaurants.

There is a popular 'scarecrow festival' (fete de epouvantails) at the end of July (last Sunday), followed by a large meal and fireworks to finish, seasonal music events and a Christmas market.

Medieval Sarlat is highly recommended and worth more than one visit, and Beynac, Castelnaud, Domme & La Roque Gageac are nearby.

There are many activities close to Meyrals, including golf, horse-riding, cycling, canoeing, swimming, fishing, hot-air ballooning, and speleology amongst others.

Medieval Sarlat has a twice weekly market and a wonderful Christmas market.

Garden and outside

Outside, there are grounds of approximately 3 acres surrounding the property, mainly laid to lawn, but including some private woodlands. If you listen at night you can hear the owls talking to each other! We frequently see red squirrels and occasionally deer in the garden. Butterflies and hoopoes are seen frequently in the garden, and rare orchids in the woods. We keep a few sheep in a paddock and our neighbour keeps a few hens, so you may hear countryside noises.

The garden has been extensively planted to offer privacy whilst providing colour and scent. Lorraine was previously a horticultural tutor and is now a best selling author and enjoys gardening.
Parking for the gite is immediately outside the gite. There are exterior lights to the patio and some solar lights around the garden.

A badminton set has been provided to amuse the children. There is also a charcoal bbq for you to use.
Garden furniture, parasols and tables and chairs are provided for your use.

Parking and garages

Private free parking is located just outside the gite front door. Please park as directed. No responsibility can be accepted for parking contrary to our instructions.

Visitor suitability

All accommodation is on ground level with wide access doors. There are no steps or stairs within the gite or at the entrance to the gite and the gite is suitable for children and less mobile guests. The gite has been equally popular with quieter families and couples who prefer the spaciousness together with the beautiful view from the terrace outside the gite.

There are stairs in the garden area with some steep walls and the parking area is finished with loose gravel. We ask that you supervise your children at all times and especially near the swimming pool. It is not permitted to walk on top of the walls in the garden.

The gite is surrounded by lawns, an orchard and woodlands to the rear, with a few neighbouring houses, on the edge of a pretty village. It is quiet and tranquil and our guests frequently comment on the relaxed atmosphere. The gite is NOT suitable for parties of any kind.

The gite is strictly no smoking/no vaping & animals of any sort are NOT permitted.

Information about any additional facilities

A cot with mattress and a highchair are available if you require them. Just let us know.
We have a badminton set with net and boules set for your use - just ask.

The pool has been refurbished with a new liner, shallow non-slip steps and has a graduated slope. We alert swimmers to the temperature of the pool via a board on the pool house. The pool is unheated but temperatures rise to 25 in June and from July to mid September the temperature is between 28 and 31 degrees.

Children may play quietly on the front lawn and enjoy the badminton set provided.

The garden attracts lots of wildlife including resident red squirrels, Little Owls, woodpeckers and both roe and red deer. There is little light pollution and the skies are particularly good for star watching and milky way photography.

The Owner Recommends

Beynac chateau

Chateau de Beynac is perched on a hillside on the banks of the Dordogne. Well worth visiting for both the old town and the chateau, places to eat and drink. The chateau is open from 10am till 6.30pm and visiting will take about an hour. There is ample car parking at the chateau itself.

Chateau de Castelnaud

Hugging the banks of the Dordogne above a pretty little village is the Chateau de Castelnaud. Great if you like castles, medieval warfare etc. Great if you like pretty villages! Quite a steep walk and lots of steps, so if your unfit or have very young children this needs to be considered. Check their website, but they do swordfighting lessons for the kids, blacksmith demonstrations and trebuchet demonstrations from May onwards. Great views of Roque Gageac and the Dordogne river.

Lascaux IV caves, Montignac

Only a half hour's drive away, Lascaux is a must visit if you are in the Dordogne. Open from 9am till 7.30pm, you can easily spend 2-3 hours here, looking at the replica of prehistoric art. The museum is always busy and internet booking is advised. Go for an English tour to get the most of your visit, unless you speak very good French. Not really suitable for kids under 5 years old. Great option for when the weather isnt perfect.

Chateau de Campagne

This Chateau which is just a few minutes drive from Gite Le Bois Vert is not usually open to the public, but the grounds are! And they are FREE! With large lawns, a water feature and ponds, a potager garden and small newly planted orchard they are ideal for a half day visit. For older children there is the fun of exploring the caves at the rear of the garden (perfectly safe and great fun). Great location for a picnic lunch or a half day filler. Located in the centre of the village of Campagne there is ample parking and a few restaurants.

Via Ferrata at Marquessac Gardens

This is great for active teens and parents. A cliff climbing/walking experience with full training & safety lines etc, this is great for those with too much energy and great for family bonding. Buy your tickets at the Gardens of Marquessac desk.

St Cyprien Sunday market

This fabulous large village market is bursting with fresh and cooked food and vegetables and non food items. There is a focus on local wines and produce including foie gras, truffles and walnuts. There are also many cafes and restaurants well placed to offer you refreshment should you feel ravenous after doing your shopping. Lots of parking, cash dispensers and toilets nearby.

Sarlat market

The medieval town of Sarlat is stuffed with streets and lanes full of wonderful shops and eateries. But Sarlat is world famous for its produce market. Every Saturday and Wednesday from 8.30am till around 2pm there are stalls and traders filling the centre of the old town with local delicacies, crafts and fruit, vegetables and wine. From mid June till mid September there is also a night market from 6pm till 10pm, with street entertainment for all the family.

La Merenda Restaurant

La Merenda is located a short walk from Gite Le Bois Vert in the village of Meyrals.
This unpretentious restaurant serves both locals and tourists to the area, and the food is cooked freshly from local ingredients (Try the veal with a bottle of Pecharmant wine). There is both indoor and veranda dining and if you simply want to sit and have a drink and watch the world go by, there is a bar tabac downstairs. They also do divine take away pizzas. Davide & Delphine both speak English if you are a little shy to speak French.

Musee Nationale de Prehistoire, Les Eyzies

Really fantastic displays in a cracking modern building set into the living rock in the centre of Les Eyzies. Free parking, toilets and an outdoor view of Les Eyzies from the third floor to take your breath away. Well worth an hour to 2 hours if you are into prehistory. FREE entry first Sunday of the month!

I would certainly recommend this property to others. It matched the description given by the owners who were themselves extremely helpful whenever required. The provision of a small hamper of goodies to greet us on arrival was much appreciated, as was the provision of pool towels. The village was less than a ten minute stroll away; both village restaurants merit a visit, as does La Savie about a five minute drive away. The pool was a godsend, shared only with one other single-bedroomed property, and well maintained.

9.5 / 10 The Every’s 19 June, 2019

We have just returned from a weeks holiday with 2 very young children. Lorraine was brilliant at answering some questions we had before we arrived via email and went out of her way to make our stay comfortable. Even letting our daughter feed her sheep! The gite was brilliant for a young family, it’s bright, fresh and had everything we needed. The pool very inviting, well cared for and popular with our 3 year old. The gite is perfectly situated to explore the Dordogne and Vezere valley, with lots of attractions less that 20 mins away (perfect if you don’t want to be in the car all the time) the bakery is in walking distance and supermarket a short drive. All in all we had a lovely stay at Gite Le Bois Vert and will be recommending it to our fiends and family.

We have just returned from a truly excellent holiday staying at Gite le Bois Vert. The facilities, pool, terraces and surrounding gardens met our high standards and were complimented by our friendly and very helpful hosts. We enjoyed lazy days by the pool with grapes and figs from the garden and fresh bread from the village boulangerie. When we wanted a day out at markets museums or world class attractions, it was all to hand only a short drive away. We didn’t want to leave and will definitely be back.

Owner response

The gite is very clean tidy has all equipment needed in the lounge, kitchen and bathroom. We found it very comfortable and a good size for two adults and two teenagers.
The pool was fantastic. It is a good size and never felt too cold.
The owners are very friendly and available and are more than happy to provide any advise for any questions you may have on local facilities or attractions.
The village location is great and has a bakery and a very good restaurant that even provides take away pizza. You will need to drive about 5km to surrounding villages/towns for a supermarket/shop but are very easy to find.
There are plenty of attractions, activities and things to do all within around 30 mins drive of the gite.
We would definitely go back.

Owner response
