We highly recommend the following restaurants for 2018 :-
Le Bistrot de L'Octroi
Les Jardins d'Harmonie
All the above restaurants take food very seriously at reasonable prices at walking distance in Sarlat center.
We can also recommend several Brasseries for good food/eating at very reasonable prices!
General tourist attractions.
There is much to do in the Dordogne area, including canoeing and kayaking, visiting some of the "most beautiful villages" in the region, such as Baynac, La Roque Gageac and Domme, each about a 15 minute drive from Sarlat.
Cycling and walking is popular and we have a Voie Verte nearby - an old railway line stretching for 30 kilometers. There are castles and caves to visit like Lascaux 4 (not to be missed) and Font de Gaume. Outside of the Dordogne are the wine regions of Bergerac, about 1 hour and Bordeaux, about 2 1/2 hours with Saint Emilion being about 2 hrs distance.
For getting around, whilst a car is not necessary for exploring the old town, it is preferable to have one for going further afield to visit the Dordogne region. Taxis and private tours can of course be hired.
We can usually pick up/drop off from Sarlat train station during reasonable hours with advance notice for a small fee.
