About this property

17th Century Stone Cottage, Shared Heated Pool. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

La Bergerie is the oldest of two gites here at French Farm Gites and can be booked at REDUCED RATES for 2 persons and FLEXIBLE ARRIVAL on request.
Built in the 17th century it's a real PERIOD COTTAGE, on two floors with all original exposed stone walls, oak beams and floors. Restored but retaining all remaining original features, its a cottage for those who love the old and traditional. With a lounge leading onto a light and private small cottage garden, plus two first floor bedrooms leading onto a rear terrace, its a very versatile holiday space for a family of four or just a couple. The master bedroom is large, large enough to have it's own lounge suite; the second bedroom is small but has two full size single beds.

It shares a lovely 10×5m heated pool providing stunning views from our hilltop position over the wooded valley. Loads of poolside terracing, furniture and shade it's a real feature of our location.
The views, particularly from the gardens and pool along with the peace and quiet are the features all our visitors comment upon.
Our property occupies 5 acres of hillside amongst valleys and woodland offering endless waymarked walks and cycle tracks starting from our gates. Many of our visitors come as keen walkers and cyclists, road and MTB are excellently catered for from our gates.
Only a short cycle or car trip to the River Dronne with all the usual river activities, we are also within 5 km of a handful of villages providing the full range of amenities and restaurants.

Kitchen and dining

The kitchen is separate leading off from the lounge which has the dining suite.
Equipped with a fridge and freezer, gas oven and hob, washing machine, microwave and the essential extras like coffee percolator that one needs for your holiday.

Living rooms

The living room opens directly onto the sunny cottage garden. Like the other rooms this is fully beamed with exposed stone walls and has an old stone hearth. Single window overlooking the garden.
It has lounge furniture to sit four persons and the dining table and chairs. A tv (UK Freesat) completes the lounge.

Master bedroom:
This is a large room which mirrors the lounge below - fully beamed with stone walls and a large stone feature hearth. Wooden floor and single window overlooking the garden. All the gite's windows have traditional shutters as they face south and east.
Full double bed and bedside tables, chest of drawers for clothes storage and a stone alcove for hanging.
This bedroom also has lounge seating; wonderfully light and airy and, like the whole property, stays lovely and cool in the hot months due to its metre-thick walls.

Cot available.

Bedroom 2:
A small bedroom opposite the master with two single beds and chest of drawers.

The bedrooms are on the first floor. The gite is built into the slop of the hillside so this level opens out onto the rear garden level by a hallway and rear door. This gives access to your rear bbq terrace.

Bathroom on first floor off the hallway. Built when the gite was restored it has a wc, hand basin and a shower.

There is no heating in this gite, hence it is only made available for rental from June to mid-September.
Mobile heating can be made available for early or late season bookings on request and a small charge for fuel.

It"s the pool!!!!
You also have a furnished garden with a permanent stone bqq on the rear terrace for outdoor cooking and al fresco dining. There are several places in the surrounding gardens to sit and enjoy the views or picnics under a tree.

Garden and outside

The entire property, to which this cottage is attached is surrounded by gardens taking up about half an acre of the 5 acres of our property. Your gite has it's own totally private cottage garden to the front and a terrace area to the rear equipped with shade, dining table and chairs. A short walk through the gardens of the general property lead to the communal grassy areas where you can shade under the apple tree, watch the horses being schooled or enjoy the view over the valley and woodlands. The pool is in this elevated area with beautiful views.

We are at the end of the lane so beyond our gates is access to the ancient woodland with its walks (waymarked or just wander yourself) and tracks for off road cycling.

Parking and garages

Parking is at the rear of the property.

Visitor suitability

There are two gites here. We don't forbid additional visitors visiting you during the day or evening whilst you stay. We simply expect you to respect that like you, the other gite will have been booked by people who know we are not a 4 or 5 gite property, so don't expect the facilities (particularily the pool) to be over-run by others. Hence, day visitors are by request and dependant upon circumstances and the other gite guests.

Information about any additional facilities

The pool is 10x5m and heated from mid May to mid September. There are two terraces desiccated to the two gites here and a third for our use - loads of space to lounge by the pool and there is a lounger for each person occupying the gite. Both guest terraces have permanent shade to escape the sun as well as areas where you can sit in full sun.
There is space in the general grounds for playing games.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Michael Smith

We are Gail and Mike and we moved to Grand Brassac in our 40's in 2004 for a different pace of life. Initially running our gites in parallel with a smallholding, we now live a life of leisure though Gail still practices as an Acupuncturist. We are keen cyclists and equestrian: Gail competes at dressage and eventing whilst Mike competes at Road racing and MTB.<br/>We live in the most superb location imaginable for both sports as well as an area of outstanding natural beauty.
