About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Odile Supper

After many years of a hectic life in Paris, Odile decided to move to the Dordogne with her family and took over the Cottages de Toutifaut in the year 2000. Since then, she's been running the gites wit much care and love. Set in the countryside, away from traffic, yet only 20 km from Bergerac and 4 km from Lalinde, Toutifaut offers peace and a relaxing place for your holidays.

Year property purchased 2000
Why this location? I love Dordogne for the charming atmosphere of the Bastides towns, a plunge in history which begings in the Hundred Years' War. These historically-rich places adorn an art-de-vivre and animations as soon as spring comes.
Of course, the Dordogne is famous for its history which takes us back as early as -400 000 years BC. The choice is vast: Lascaux, Rouffignac and the capital of world history Les Eyzies.
The Dordogne enjoys a temperate climate providing lovely vacations all year round.
Unique benefits of property Your stay at Toutifaut provides the ideal place to allow you to fully embrace this fantastic corner of France. Our location is perfect for access to all of the surrounding places of interest, all within one hour maximum. From the Bastide towns that give beautiful medieval backdrops to restaurants and bars to the vast array of activities including canoeing, caving, horse riding, golf, hot air ballooning...etc.
We live onsite in the main part of the old farm. We love to help our guests feel at home here and want them to consider it their home in France
We have two gites, Saphir and the Pigeonnier, all renovated from the original farm and barn, parts of which date back to the 18th century. Both gites are independent and have their own private terrace. Situated in the edge of the village of Couze, overlooking the valley, we are very quiet and rural but within easy reach of all the major towns and tourist sites and well served by the airports of Bergerac (30 mins).

The Owner Recommends

Couze et Saint Front

our village of Couze has been renowned for its numerous paper mills and its rag paper production for over 500 years.
Take a stroll along the River Couze and discover former mills, racks for drying the sheets, brick chimneys…that conjure up the village's past industrial activity.
The semi-troglodytic dwellings, leaning against the cliffs, are also well worth a visit.
In the 15th century, Gutenberg revolutionized the printing world with his movable-type invention. As it became much easier to print works, larger quantities of paper had to be produced.
And, it was here that the little village of Couze et Saint-Front played a key role!
13 mills were built along the River Couze to produce rag paper.
Today, three mills carry on the paper tradition: the Larroque Mill (art paper), the Rouzique Mill(ecomuseum - visits - workshops) and the Barreaux Mill(industry-specific filter paper manufacture).

Local shops

Our village of Couze offers a boulangerie, a mini-supermarket, 2 restaurants, a creperie, a pharmacie and a post office. Small weekly market on friday (mostly fresh vegetables).
Full range of facilities are found in Lalinde (4 km) -banks- petrol station-2 supermarket-weekly large market on thursday.

Grotte de Font de Gaume, Les Eyzies

Les Eyzies, is known as the Capital of European Pre-history.The Grotte de Font de Gaume is located at the entrance of the village. It has one of the finest collections of pre-historic paintings still open to the public. Admission is limited to only 200 per day so you need to plan ahead. In the summer it is normally booked up to 3 weeks ahead! The National Museum of Prehistory can also be found in Les Eyzies.

The Medieval town of Issigeac

At the heart of its historic circular enclosure, where narrow streets wind and curl like a snail and its shell, you will discover a picturesque village whose alleyways and passageways bring the past back to life. A village, overflowing with history and architecture.
Weekly market
“Issigeac’s Sunday market is a must-not-miss. Over the years it has built up an incredible reputation. A small-scale activity during winter, it takes on a whole other dimension in summer and virtually covers the whole village. It is a major weekly event in the south of the department. Enjoyment for everyone guaranteed”.

Chateaux And Castles

The Perigord is the home of 1001 chateaux, many of them open to the public our favorites being Beynac, reached in 40 mn from Toutifaut. But there are many others - Biron - Castelnaud - Les Milandes etc...

Gardens of Marqueyssac

The gardens of Marqueyssac, the most visited garden in Perigord is perched on the cliffs above the Dordogne Valley. It offers more than 6 kilometers of shaded paths, edged with 150000 hand-pruned boxwoods aged over hundred years. Candle night light every Thursday evening in July and August.

La Roque St Christophe

One of the most incredible attractions in the region and just 10 minutes drive, a UNESCO World Heritage site, La Roque St Christophe is a 1km long cliff, 80m high with 5 enormous galleries. Since troglodyte days, it has been a place of safe refuge. You get to see how the city was arranged and there are working replicas of the lifts which were needed to bring supplies up the cliff face.

Monpazier

My favorite village, a 30 mn drive: the bastide of Monpazier dazzles with its exceptional character; it has remained virtually intact since it was founded in 1284 – in the name of King Edward I of England.
Acknowledged as the ‘model’ bastide with its perfect orthogonal layout, it would influence the style of some of the greatest architects.
Stroll along its narrow streets and alleyways, wander under its arches and explore its Thursday-morning market, on the Place des Cornières that has existed for over 700 years!

Canoeing The Dordogne And Vezere Rivers

In Limeuil, you don't have to miss Canoeing, well organized activity for all your family - park your car, choose your destination and at the end of your day you will be picked up.
The Dordogne valley passes beneath several famous chateaux including Beynac and Castelnaud, and drifts through the village of La Roche Gageac. Unforgettable

Wine Bergerac

The Maison des Vins: a magnificent mansion, sporting exquisite architecture, in front of Bergerac harbour. An amazing place that houses the Récollets Cloister and proposes a great selection of events. If you wish to find out all about Bergerac and Duras wines then a visit is a must.

Night Markets - Marchés Nocturnes

Every evening in a different village throughout July & August there is an evening market - Simply turn up and grab one of the tables which are set up in the market squares. Market traders provide everything from wine, starters, cooked meals and deserts some of the produce sold comes from local farmers and producers and is typical of the region. Then dance the night away to the live band - a great night out also enjoyed by all the locals. Every other Monday night is held a marché nocturne in our village, but, for the Jazzy music, I recommend you to enjoy the one in Beaumont du Perigord which is distant 9 km.
