Renovated Farmhouse A Short Walk From The Village. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Situated in a peaceful hamlet, this spacious stone built single storey converted farmhouse looks over 4000m² of private gardens, a lake on adjoining property and surrounding countryside yet remains within easy walking distance (approx 700 mtrs) of the picturesque village of Saint Jean de Cole with its restaurants, hotel, shop and Tourist information office.
Recently refurbished, the property retains its feature original beams and stone fireplace and has been tastefully furnished to ensure a comfortable peaceful holiday with plenty of space for guests.The lounge features a stone fireplace with logburner, tv with UK channels and comfortable seating. Free wi-fi broadband internet access is available.

There are two large bedrooms, one with a king size bed with limed beamed ceiling and the large bright double bedroom room which has an en suite shower room (can also be entered from a corridor). The generous size bathroom has a walk in shower in addition to the bath. A further single bed can be placed in the king size room if required - there is ample space.
The farmhouse style dining kitchen with range cooker is fully equipped and has lots of china, cutlery, glasses, pans and utensils.
Double frenchdoors take you from the lounge to the upper patio which then leads to the 6mtr by 4mtr covered seating area, a terrace and barbecue area and on to the private lawned gardens. You may want to pick a peach, plum, pear, apple or a few cherries from the trees in the orchard or just sit and watch the wildlife including Deer, coypu, buzzards, squirrels that pass by the garden from time to time or sit and relax down the garden on the lower terrace.
There is safe parking at the front of the cottage. The English owners will be here to welcome you and will always be close by if needed.
There are several Leisure lakes in the area with fine sandy beaches, fishing areas, cycle and walking trails.

There is a large kitchen - dining room with range cooker, fridge freezer, washing machine, 3 large dressers, microwave, etc, lots of storage and its fully equipped with nice china, cutlery, glassware, pots, pans and utensils.

The house normally stays warm enough during the holiday season. There is an electrical heater and we can provide logs for the log burner in the lounge if required.

Garden and outside

The patio outside the lounge leads to a 24m² covered seating area and a further terrace and barbeque area. Steps then leads to the 4000 m² of grassy garden space and orchard.

Visitor suitability

The house is single storey but has a couple of steps inside. There are a few steps down to the covered terrace and further steps lead down to the gardens. The garden slopes at the top but is fairly flat at the bottom.

This year the village has again won the accolade of being one of France's top 100 most beautiful villages.
Walking and cycling opportunities abound. The Voie Verte is a 17km stretch of converted 19th century railway line that links Saint-Pardoux to Thiviers via St Jean. It’s great for summer cycling as it’s well shaded by oaks, pines and acacias. Dordogne Cycle Hire can provide a range of bikes Being the Regional Natural Park of the Perigord Limousin we are fortunate in having well signposted and maintained pathways with a choice of routes- some routes are signposted from outside the house. Maps etc at the Tourist information office in the village center.
The Beach
We have a golden sand beach on a lake only 10 mins away. Surveillance during high season and a snack bar,free access and parking. We have some beach towels available.
Grotte de Villars
The Villars Cave, about 10 mins away by car, has original prehistoric paintings amongst the stalagmites and stalactites. Guided tours through part of the network take around an hour. The fairy tale Chateau de Puyguilhem nearby there is well worth a visit too.
Horse Riding
There are numerous stables, the nearest is Equestrian Farm Hippocamp at Lempzours 0553 526199 just a 10 minute's drive away. The National Stud headquarters at Pompadour is about an hour's drive with a lovely race course and where you can tour the stables.
Brantome Police Horses have recently been voted No.1 Visitor Attraction for the Brantome Area . Canoes can be hire at Brantome for a trip down the river Dronne.
Markets and Vide Greniers (car boot sales and brocante/antique fairs)
There are general markets somewhere not too far away every day of the week. Thiviers is Saturday, Brantome Friday and Excideuil Thursday. Look out for the vide greniers which are normally Saturday or Sunday
Golf - at Excideuil , Perigueux and Limoges. There is an adventure park, Safari park, fishing........and 1001 Chateaux

The property is in a lovely location up a long quiet lane. It is far larger than the photographs suggest, with; a large lobby area, country kitchen, lounge with a huge farm house fireplace, very good sized bedrooms, and a bathroom with a nice shower unit.

Again, the pictures of the outside do not do it justice. There is a table and chairs for 6 people, with a nice covered and cushioned terrace area that can easily seat a group of 8/10. The view is across an expansive lawned area (down a few steps and which offers a further seating area) and into the distance - not a building, road, or human to be seen.

The property was spotless inside and out. The owners have obviously spent time and money on the interior and exterior, and the outcome is of credit to them. They are a nice couple and available if you need them.

We stayed in mid-July when the weather was sweltering. With this being a building with thick walls the owners recommended we keep the windows and doors closed to preserve the cool air inside. This was excellent advice! The interior was always cool and a welcome relief to the heat outside - we never had problems sleeping.

We thoroughly recommend this property.

What a find! A beautiful old farmhouse in a beautiful rural setting. Our hosts, John and Carolyn couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. They went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed with a warm welcome and personal tour and explaination of all of the features of their lovely house. John and Carolyn live in the village (700 mtrs stroll) and urged us to get in touch if we needed anything at all. The extensive gardens (shared with the gite) and the private dining and patio areas were delightful. We particularly made use of the shaded cosy seating to while away the long hot afternoons. The cool of the farmhouse was always welcome in such warm conditions. A tiny village, St Jean de Cole has limited facilities but this is more than made up for by it's charm. Nearby Thivier has everything you would need and the beautiful towns of Brantome and Bardeilles are only a short drive away. Towards the end of the holiday a severe storm struck the area knocking out power lines and bringing trees down. As soon as the storm subsided, John was round checking everything was okay and ensuring that we had torches and candles. The following day with the power still out he managed to find a camping stove and grill for us, unfortunately the farmhouse is all electric. Far from ruining the holiday we spent the last 2 evenings playing games by candle light! We wouldn't hesitate to revisit. A lovely holiday that we will remember for a long time.

John and Carolyn warmly welcomed us on arrival and talked us through all the benefits the property, there was also a welcome 'pack' to get us started as the local shops were closed at the time of our arrival.
The advert fully and accurately described the property which is beautifully furnished and well maintained. There is a large garden with very comfortable seating/loungers which further adds to the comfort mode.
If heating is required, there is a log fire in the lounge and wood supplied on request. John and Carolyn live locally, and happy to respond should any problem arise
The whole holiday experience at L'Ancienne Ferme was a delight.
