|Why this location?||We were looking for a rural location to spend our retirement. Convenient for airport links and ferries to UK. We selected a stone house set in a quiet hamlet.
We appreciate good wines so wanted a property near the Bordeaux/Bergerac wine regions. We are ideally situated between Bergerac and Bordeaux .
We had an Oyster sailing yacht on arrival, which we moored at Cap Breton in the Basque region, a 3 hour drive for us. This region offers access to all our needs, including Bordeaux a cosmopolitan city and the Atlantic coast all with easy reach. The Pyrenees are easily reached in 3 hours, due to the new motorway from Langon to Lourdes, as is the Spanish border. South West France has a charming rural appeal without the bustle of larger cities, and the local population appreciate good wine and excellent food, at a fraction of UK prices. The busy parts of the Dordogne towards Sarlat are conveniently reachable without the crush of tourists that prevail in the summer months.
|Unique benefits of property||The whole property is surrounded by a stone wall, with electric gate so offers both privacy and security. Our pool is salt,( much kinder to swimmers) and is secluded from the properties by its own security wall and safety gate. We have been awarded the maximum 3 stars by the French Tourist Board, (top rating for a gite of our capacity). Bedroom both upstairs and downstairs have their own individual bathroom facilities, with either an extra double or sitting room being available upstairs. Air conditioning/heating to property.
All beds can be either large kingsize or twin beds according to needs. Knowing luggage restrictions to travellers using flights to us, we provide all linen and towels including swimming towels.
We have lawned gardens with shade providing trees for people who need space to sit and read.
Supermarket and vetinary facilites are with 10 minutes of our property in a small town called Montpon situated just off the main autoroute from Bordeaux to Lyon. N89.
3 kms from us there is an inland fresh water lake, recently rennovated with sandy beach, swimming, paddle boarding and supervised adventure section for children. There are two small cafes providing good food, ice creams ,drinks etc and is a lovely spot to watch the sunset with a drink in hand!!
Having plenty of parking and shade it is a lovely place to spend some time.
The" jewel in the crown" for the area. Wonderful walled mediaeval town, with masses to do! Wine tours, sightseeing, restaurants, & craft type shops. Little train ride around the town for the children & tasters! About 20 mins. from us by car.
This is a wonderful place to relax in the main square with a delicious lunch or just a cool drink and home made ice cream.
The church and cloisters are a must.
Every day in this area there is an accessible market selling local produce and delicacies from this region. This includes caviar from the river Lisle, and foie gras and wine from our immediate location and even truffles from the Perigord region.
In the months of July and August there are many night markets where locals cook delicious food and sell direct from the Chateau wines. Music and dance is the norm, and the chance to talk to the locals who gladly share their experiences of life in rural South West France
To commemorate the end of the 100 years war (against the English) the locals put on an extremely professional reenactment of the Battle with horses, stunt riders, animals, armies from both sides, and even Eleanor of Acquitane herself. This event is staged in front of a Chateau at night, with searchlights and music with a running commentary recalling the event.
This is a must for any history buffs or anyone looking for a good evening,s entertainment. Check the website for times and dates. We personally have been 4 times and thoroughly enjoyed every performance.
Situated on the Dordogne river, 40 minutes drive through the vines, this is a beautiful medieval town well worth a visit. There is a wine museum for information, a tobacco museum, lots of small winding lines, a market, good shops, and lots of interesting little restaurants to eat at.
There are river trips from the old port and a good tourist information centre to get more details from. A visit to Montbazillac on the way back to see its Chateau and try its sweet wine, is highly recommended.
The nearest City, accessible from the autoroute, needs a full day to be appreciated.
Situated on the Garonne river it has been completely updated with a comprehensive tram system to get you about. The centre is medieval with lots of shopping and fine restaurants based on the river frontage, and still boasts submarine bases which have been turned into museums . The recently built City de Vin is a modern building covering everything concerning wine making and production, plus tastings and a stunning restaurant.
