Ideally located, luxuriously furnished, thoughtfully equipped, and private, with beautiful views, you will be glad you booked Matisse from the moment you step through the door.
Matisse is one of four holiday apartments at Maison Pierre D’Or, a traditional stone house on the edge of the medieval centre of Sarlat in the stunning Perigord Noir region of Dordogne in South West France.
Matisse is the perfect base from which to explore the town and its surrounding countryside. It’s ideal for couples (although suitable for 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children), and is within an easy 5 minute stroll into the medieval centre with its markets, bistros, picturesque squares and historic buildings.
The apartment features a cosy living room, a very comfortable bedroom, a sociable and well equipped dining kitchen, a modern bathroom, and a light and airy conservatory which leads on to a private balcony with a superb view over Sarlat. This is the perfect place to share a glass or two of good local wine and to relax in the sunshine.
Attention has been paid to the details. The apartment has been furnished with great looking light, oak furniture. The bedroom has an exceptionally comfortable, king size bed with fresh, crisp, cotton bedlinen and soft pillows. The shower room has a walk in shower with hot water on tap and fabulous fluffy towels. The kitchen is fully equipped, there is also a Nespresso coffee maker. The tv receives both French and English channels. There are quirky lamps and paintings by a local artist, making Matisse the perfect place for your stay in Dordogne.
Oh, and there is free parking on site and free wi-fi (free high-speed). Free high speed Internet.
Free cancellation subject to conditions (see cancellation policy for details).
If your dates are booked at Matisse, please take a look at our other two apartments, Monet and Cezanne
There is a modern dining kitchen in the apartment, with a dining table and chairs for up to four guests. It is well equipped with fridge freezer, oven and hob, washing machine and dishwasher, as well as plenty of space to prepare meals.
It is fully furnished with all the crockery and cutlery and pots and pans that you will need for you holiday. There is a coffee press and espresso maker, and recently we bought a Nespresso maker. There is a great coffee shop in Sarlat, off the square, the brulerie, where they roast and blend the coffees.
There are a further two living rooms in Matisse, a conservatory and a small salon. The conservatory leads on to the terrace, and is furnished with chairs and a table, and it makes a perfect place to read and to relax.
The salon leads from the conservatory and is a cosy retreat. There is a sofa bed, new oak furniture, and a television with channels in both French and English.
There is one bedroom with a king size bed and very comfortable mattress. The bed is freshly made prior to your arrival. We have Egyptian cotton bedding and a range of beautiful duvet covers. We supply freshly laundered bedding each week.
We have decorated the bedroom with new oak furniture. It is a very comfortable, and relaxing room.
We have silent fans in each apartment, which allow you to sleep with the windows open and to stay cool.
There is a shower room and separate wc. The shower room has a walk-in Italian shower, and washbasin. Hot water is available 24/7, and we provide lovely big fluffy towels including a bathsheet, hand towel and facecloth per person. We provide a change of clean towels each week.
There is central heating. If the temperature drops the heating comes on for 2 hours in the morning and from early evening.
There is a mobile air conditioning unit which is available in the hot summer months should you require it.
Sarlat is a medieval town and is full of historical buildings to look round. There are tours with guides who can speak your language. In the squares there are street entertainers throughout the season.
There are dozens of restaurants and bars, and shops. The market on Saturday runs through the town. You can buy everything from gifts and crafts to food and clothes. The Wednesday market sells mostly local produce.
Entertainment in the apartment includes free wifi, a tv with programmes in both French and English, some German and American channels too. There is a dvd player with a number of dvds
There is a private balcony leading from the conservatory in the Matisse apartment. The balcony faces south west and is furnished with garden chairs and with a bistro table and chairs. It's very popular, and a great place to have lunch, and to relax.
The balcony has a great view over Sarlat and down the valley.
There is also a garden with lawns and flower beds. We have put deck chairs and sun loungers on the grass in the garden, which are available for guests should you wish to sunbathe.
The bamboo terrace is an extra terrace in the garden, sunny during the day and shaded in the evening. It is available for the use of guests during their stay. There is also a barbecue on the bamboo terrace for you to use whenever you want.
There is parking for 4 cars. A space for each apartment, next to the house. There are two spaces on the drive and two on the hard standing at the side of the house.
Parking is free for the duration of your stay, and conveniently situated next to the apartments.
The front of the house is on Rue Jean Leclaire, and there is a gate from the garden that you can take to walk down to the centre. But by car, from the bottom of Rue Jean Leclaire, take the first turn to the left on to Cote de Ravat, first left again, on to Rue Roger Bissiere, and first left again on to Lieu dit Roc Bediere, where Maison Pierre D'Or is on the right.
The apartments are ideal for couples, but the Matisse apartment has dining for 4 and you are welcome to invite friends back during the day/evening. However, it is not appropriate for parties.
There are guests in the other apartments, and we ask that everyone respects each other's space. Most guests like the peace and quiet.
A lifelong Francophile, I have always wanted to live in France. In 2016, with my French speaking husband Ahm, we bought Maison Pierre D'Or in the beautiful medieval town of Sarlat in the Dordogne. This was a chance to practise my French and to enjoy the French lifestyle. Having the apartments has given us the opportunity to meet lots of wonderful people and to explore this beautiful region. It's a wonderful place with many, many sunny days. Every day is a holiday for us.

This bistro is our favourite in Sarlat. It makes the perfect tartiflette, and we can highly recommend it. You'll love its traditional French décor and friendly staff.
Or for more fine dining, visit Le Presidiel, where you can enjoy white tablecloths and exquisite French cooking in the beautiful setting of the old law courts.
This is our second stay with Maggie and Ahmed in Matisse. It is as delightful as ever. The setting gives you a view over the town below, far enough to be out of the hussle of this lively small city, but near enough to easily walk into town. It has private parking and has easy access to the major roads leading you wherever you choose to go.
And go you should. Every way you go, you will find something delightful. Tiny villages, lovely gardens, caves, prehistoric sites, rivers to float down, and wonderful small restaurants, We particularly liked Domme and Marquissade gardens, but there are so many lovely places it would take a book to list them all.
It is surprisingly easy to drive in this area. Roads, even tiny ones, are well marked, and they always lead somewhere new. This area is absolutely beautiful, no matter where you go.
The apartment is very well set up. It has a lovely outside terrace, just off a great sunroom. The kitchen is large and very good for cooking in. Even with all the restaurants close at hand, we cooked in a lot due to the fabulous markets held in the town twice a week. You can find a wonderful selection of meats, fish, vegetables and fruits, as well as cheeses, and oh so much more.
The gardens at the apt are gorgeous, and Maggie and Ahmed keep them so. Lots of work by them to provide joy to their guests. This is a lovely place to stay, with lovely hosts. I am sure we will be back.
It was a pleasure to have you both to stay again Kristine. It’s great for us to know how much you love the Perigord, and to see you feel so at home in the apartment. Many thanks for your wonderful review and the memories you’ve given us. Welcome back any time.
