About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Paul Edmunds

I'm Paul and along with my wife, Pam, run a Photographic Holiday Course company, alongside Chambre d'Hotes. After long careers in the UK we decided to settle in France. We enjoy meeting people and love the French way of life. Les Ages is a tiny rural farming hamlet of 18 people and retains its unique French character.

Why this location? Fantastic french countryside surrounds our location and it's a great base for walking and cycling (bicycles are available on-site). There is easy access to the beautiful town of Brantome - called the 'Little Venice' of the Perigord area. Historic Perigueux is a short drive away, with its wonderful Cathedral and vibrant Wednesday/Saturday markets, where one can buy wonderful fresh fruit, tasty cheeses, delicious cold meats and of course - crusty french baguettes.
Unique benefits of property The property is a 17th century barn conversion offering a very friendly atmosphere with fantastic cuisine. The location of the property is ideal for walkers, cyclists and is surrounded by wildlife. We also have a bird 'hide' in the garden, making it ideal for birdwatchers. The only sounds you hear are the birdsong along with the odd tractor!

Brantome Kayaks

The River Dronne encircles Brantome and is a very popular starting point for kayaking down-river to Bordeilles, totalling around 10k of beautiful river scenery . The return journey is thankfully provided by minibus!

La Grotte de Villars

A short drive away are the magnificent Caves (Grottes) of Villars. They were discovered in 1953 and really are worth a visit, offering guided tours and prehistoric cave paintings.

Chateau de Puyguilhem

A wonderfully picturesque Chateau, said to have inspired the Walt Disney Castle of Sleeping Beauty. Now restored and state owned. Tours are offered in the morning and afternoon, conducted in either French or English.

Perigueux

The wonderfully 'small' yet historic City of Perigueux, is also the capital of the Perigord region. Perigueux has a strong Roman influence with a dedicated museum. Situated in South Perigueux, the ‘Roman village’ of Versuna was discovered within church grounds while excavating for new construction. The village is an intact authentic example of Roman civilization in the area so was especially important. The whole site was then contained within a glass box, designed by famed French architect, Jean Nouvel, as a ‘living museum’, with ongoing excavation. Open throughout the season.

Perigueux also has two, weekly food markets (Saturday & Wednesday mornings). The market areas are dominated by the very impressive Cathedral of Saint Front. Cafes and restaurants abound, with something to suit all tastes and it is a good shopping area for those all-important gifts!

Brantome Abbey

Another 'must-see' is the magnificent,11thC Brantome Abbey, where throughout the summer, you will find talented local artists exhibiting their work in the former monks' dormitory. River cruises can be enjoyed throughout the season, lasting approximately one hour, with tickets available on the quayside alongside the Abbey.

Brantome Market

This vibrant, year-round market, takes place every Friday morning, with a wide variety of goods for sale. Everything for the discerning gift-hunter, from tablecloths, to wines, to soaps, as well as delicious fruits, bread and cheeses. Many quaint cafes and restaurants are within easy walking distance after the market ends, to enjoy a leisurely three-course lunch at sensible prices.
