A beautiful village located on the banks of the river Dronne, known locally as Venice of Périgord and only a drive of 29km. The Benedictine Abbey has its origins dating back to the 8th century. At the foot of the cliffs that loom behind the village, you can find the troglodyte dwellings, these were used by the original monks from the abbey and where you can find the sculpture of "The Last Judgement". You can amble through the beautiful streets, brouse through the shops or sit and enjoy and meal in one of the many restaurants. You will also find canoeing and Kayaking here. During the summer months Brantome holds a number of craft fairs where local artisans sell their goods.
Brantome hosts its market on a Friday.
Located not far from Brantome, located on the banks of the river Dronne. Chateaux de Bourdeilles dominates the village. It's two distinct castles, one older, the second more recent renaissance one. A beautiful village to spend a relaxing summer afternoon, perhaps with a picnic by the river and a cool glass of wine.
A very beautiful French village with many restaurants, bars to have lunch, or just a coffee. If you would just prefer a walk, then there are a range of public gardens in the shadow of the Chateaux. A number of medieval half timber framed houses can be found in the old part of town. Nontron has a long history reputedly dating back 3000 years, there has been evidence of prehistoric settlement in the area.
Nontron holds a market day on Saturday.
Riberac's Friday market is reputed to be the biggest in the Périgord, well worth a visit. Eglise Notre Dame is a fairly new church built in the late 30's, reminiscent of the nearby Cathedral of Perigeaux. Riberac has a number of restaurants, bars, and shops to browse. Nearby is Foret de la Dauble where you will find lots of opportunities for hiking.
Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is located in the Charente department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It has officially been listed as One of the most beautiful villages in France since 1993. It is well know for the Church of Saint Jean, an underground, Monolithic Church. You will also find a beautiful river beach here with the added attraction of canoeing and kayaking for the more adventurous.
We recently enjoyed a very relaxing two weeks at the property - from mid to late August. Rob and Angie were great hosts from the moment we arrived, providing a warm welcome followed by a quick, informative tour of the house and facilities. Before long our two young girls had chosen their beds, explored the house and various courtyard spaces and disappeared to pick cherries at the bottom of the garden.
The house was immaculately presented, and everything you could reasonably need for a relaxing stay was to hand, whether in the kitchen or enormous upstairs living room. The pool is the perfect addition to the courtyard space and provided a welcome way to spend many hours when not enjoying local walks or venturing further afield.
Most mornings included a scenic 5 minute drive to Verteillac for croissants and bread and it was unusual not to see the local Buzzard and Hawk keeping watch - all very tranquil and relaxing!
The region is very picturesque, and the property is ideally situated to enjoy looking across it, or to explore it. Most of the places we visited were quite local, with the longest drive being to Bordeaux, which took about 1h 30mins. It is a lovely city to spend a day exploring. Days out included: Bourdeilles, Brantome, Riberac, Nontron, Villebois-Lavalette, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne and other small, picture perfect villages and chateaux. All worth exploring.
We'd definitely recommend a visit. Just wake early to sit and enjoy the sunrise!
It was lovely to have Oliver and family visit us for their holiday and enjoyed the girls enjoying the pool and garden. We would love to welcome them back for another holiday.
