Chateau Forge du Roy is set in its own 184 acre estate of unspoilt rural valley for your exclusive use. Perfect for a family holiday, a party of friends, a group with shared interests, or a wedding celebration. Château Forge du Roy is in the heart of the Dordogne region within easy reach of historic towns, wonderful restaurants, and exciting activities.
The accommodation consists of two buildings - The Forge and The Barn - which face each other across the 300ft garden. Each building is a complete home with sitting room, kitchen, laundry facilities, log burning stove, etc. and has a bedroom on the ground floor which is wheelchair accessible. The complex also has a sauna, an exercise studio, a gymnasium, a wisteria covered pergola with dining area and barbecue, a pit for log bonfires with seating around, another dining area which gets the morning sunshine, a private swimming pool, a large fishing lake with boat, and a very large garden with the little River Manaurie running through it.
Our private valley is minutes away from the Vezere valley which is famous for its prehistoric sites – 147 of them listed by UNESCO. All of the Dordogne countryside is a delight of hidden valleys, chateaux, and unexpected views. The cooler months are perfect for cyclists, photographers, walkers, enthusiasts of prehistory, and any outdoor activity. Our swimming pool is lovely in warmer weather, but nearby you can go canoeing, hot air ballooning, horse riding, golfing, truffle hunting, or simply soak up the local culture and ancient architecture.
The Forge was built when Louis XIV – the Sun King – was at the peak of his radiance and France was the leading European power. Originally completed in 1680 as a hunting lodge for the Marquis De Fleurac, over the centuries it has had many changes and was, for a time, a forge which made huge iron cauldrons for sugar reduction in the French Caribbean. The locals still call it Forge Neuve, and it is also said to have produced cannon balls for Napoleon's army. The Chateau is just minutes away from the Bastide villages of Domme, Monpazier, Eymet, and Villefranche du Perigord, as well as being close to some of the listed 'Plus Beaux Villages de France', including Castelnaud, Beynac (stronghold of Richard the Lionheart), Sarlat, Limeuil, and much more.
Each of The Forge and The Barn has a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher and two fridges, in addition to laundry facilities - washer and separate drier. They also have an ironing board and iron, tv and dvd player, desk and dining table close to the sitting area in front of the log fire.
In The Forge are two sitting rooms - downstairs a cosy tv room and upstairs a larger, more formal sitting room.
The Barn has a huge open plan sitting room, dining area, and kitchen.
The main house has 6 bedrooms, five on the first floor and one on the ground floor (wheelchair accessible).
The Barn has 4 bedrooms, three on the first floor and one on the ground floor (wheelchair accessible).
All bedrooms have en suite bathrooms.
Each of the 10 bedrooms has a private bathroom, most with Villeroy and Boch fittings, heated towel rail, and underfloor heating.
Two bedrooms - 1 in each of The Forge and The Barn - are on the ground floor and reasonably wheelchair accessible.
The Forge has electric air heating in addition to the 4 log fires and the bathroom floors.
The Barn also has electric air heating and a log fire.

During high and mid season the estate is available only to groups of 20 persons (or less) who thus have exclusive use of all facilities. This is eminently suitable for family get-togethers; wedding celebrations; friends who share an interest; or any amateur or professional group for photography, painting, prehistoric exploration, cycling, walking, exploration of restaurants, or Chateaux. We can arrange for visiting chefs, masseuse, wine tasting, yoga, dance, lectures on prehistory, etc.
Two bedrooms (1 in each of The Forge and The Barn) are on the ground floor and therefore accessible by wheelchair.
Rented cars are advisable as we are out in the countryside.
Some cash in Euros is also advisable for payment of local arrangements although most restaurants and shops will accept bank cards.

|Why this location?||The Périgord region of France is a beautiful unspoiled region, rich in wildlife and history.|
|Unique benefits of property||It is considered locally to be the most important building of its kind in the whole of the Périgord, and nestles in a wooded valley with extensive gardens, stunning views, a private swimming pool and a lake.|
Within 12 kms are several canoeing/kayaking companies, who will take your group up river to a location at a suitable distance for you. You can choose 1or 2 hour trips, or an all day outing. There are several places for you to stop for lunch or gather for a while and, because these rivers are very shallow and slow moving there is little real danger.
The valley of the river Dore has several beautiful Chateaux and medieval towns, from Le Buisson de Cadouin along the D703, all the way to Domme and Vitrac, all of them well worth visiting.
The Vezere valley - within 10 kms of our Chateau - is world famous for its prehistoric caves - UNESCO lists 147 of them. Many have cave paintings or sculptures, the most famous being Lascaux which, in December 2016, opened the latest copy which is accurate to the millimetre of the original and is beautifully lit. The original cave is no longer open to visitors due to the deterioration of the paintings.
At La Douze, 13 kms (7.5 miles) from us is Garden Karting – see:
