About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr James and Jan Pyper

Jan and I moved out to France in 2002 and bought Guillemassot which was just 4 walls and a roof. We spent 5 years completely renovating the property and opened for business in 2008. Our background in the UK was in catering and have used that experience to try and provide wonderful holidays for our guests.

Year property purchased 2002
Why this location? When we first saw Guillemassot, we looked around us and those famous words, location, location, location came to mind. We are surrounded by vines, as far as the eye can see, plum orchards and a forest. The first things guests say to us are "wow, look at that view" and "what a lovely spot". We have our own private half a kilometre drive which keeps us well away from the road and perfect for children and ensures peace and quiet.
We are only 5-10 away from the small and pretty villages of Gensac and Pellegrue where there are shops, banks, restaurants and bars. 20 minutes away is Ste Foy La Grande or 40 minutes to Bergerac with large supermarkets and the facilities of a larger town.
Being in the Bordeaux wine region but on the edge of the Bergerac and Duras wine regions, there are plenty of wineries to visit and tours can be arranged. This area is full of history with many historic chateaux to visit. The caves at Lascaux and Les Eyzies is a good day out. Historic Bordeaux is 90 mins away
Unique benefits of property Living on site enables us to ensure your holiday is as trouble free as possible. Though these are rare, over the years we have helped out with various problems ie medical, cars and many other problems which when you are in another country can be difficult. Jim once rebuild a guests trailer so they could carry more wine home!
We are happy to babysit if you fancy some adult time. Many young guests spend time in Jan's kitchen, baking cakes for their family and Jim! Jim gives tractor to rides to children on his garden tractor, and let them "drive" which they love.
Our pizza on arrival evenings (or other nights by arrangement) have proved popular and gives everyone a chance to relax after the journey, have a drink and start the holiday properly. Please ask for details.

The Owner Recommends

Guillemassot, what we can offer you

The Aquitaine region Massugas is situated in the Gironde but only a few kilometres from the borders of the Dordogne and Lot et Garonne. Set in the Bordeaux wine region, with Bergerac, Duras, Entre Deux Mer are closeby. The historic city of Bordeaux with its galleries, museums and shopping is 1 hour away. The world reknowned town of St Emilion, famous for its wine and appreciation off is 30 minutes away. The Dordogne river is 10 minutes away where boat trips and canoe hire are available. The local bastide towns of Ste Foy La Grande, Duras, Monsegur, Sauveterre de Guyanne, Castillion de la Battaile and Bergerac are all within 30 minutes with a different market each day. The village and commune of Massugas is set amongst the vineyards of the Bordeaux region. The village has its own lake set in an attractive picnic area where locals and visitors can fish for free. Every weekend there is usually one of the local villages en fete which are fun to join in with and really experience the local culture and food. Local vignerons including organic wine producers are happy to offer visits and tastings. Most weekends in the spring and summer there are vide greniers and brocantes (car boot/antique fairs). A good way to spend a Sunday morning is looking for a bargain! Night markets are held in many local villages during July and August. An outdoor re-enactment of the last battle of the Hundred Years' War is held every summer in Castillion de la Bataille, really worth a visit. Gensac holds its renowned musical evenings each August, for all tastes. In June, Monsegur hosts its world famous Festival of Swing, 24 hours of Jazz. Restaurants for all budgets and tastes, from the 4 course lunch (usually including wine) for 13-15€ to the Michelin rated ones with everything in between. We are happy to recommend and book for you and if you fancy some adult time, babysit (for free).

10 / 10 Mark and Ange 16 September, 2018

Ange and I arrived just after 1700 on an August evening to a fantastic reception from Jan, Jim and the dogs. It was about this time that we were grateful for electing to have the pizza evening on Jim and Jan's veranda. This evening is wholly recommended regardless of method of travel but more so if driven. The evening is great fun with great food, great wine and fantastic company.

The house was immaculately presented and exactly as described in the advertisement. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need to sustain yourselves and more. The large lounge room has a TV and the ability to watch some UK channels, should you need to. Additionally there are plenty of DVDs and books to work your way through in an evening or on the wet days.

Our favourite area by far though was the pool area and the pool house. Comfy cushions provide an outdoor shaded seating area overlooking the pool. It is the perfect place to relax and read a book. The pool itself is a fantastic addition to a beautiful garden and surrounding area.

Ange and I both recommend a stay here without hesitation. We were made to feel very welcome throughout, our dog Barclay probably wishes he was still there and we will be booking to return next year as soon as we are able too to see what we now consider friends.

Owner response

Thank you both for such a lovely review and we are pleased that you enjoyed the house. We had such a good week with you both and Barclay of course and it flew by so fast. Really hope that we get to see you again next year. Thanks again :)

The advert for this accommodation doesn't do it justice, and the setting and accommodation is even more impressive in the flesh.
Our hosts, Jan and Jim, were very welcoming and couldn't do enough for us during our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our pizza night and would recommend this to all guests. Lovely pizza, wine and good company - and a mere few steps around the corner!
Guillemassot was super clean and extremely well-equipped. The hosts have thought of everything - even down to garden games and bits and bobs for babies.
We really appreciated the effort Jan went to get us two cotbeds with mattresses for our twin babies.
Very dog friendly - the dogs enjoyed their very own holiday, being able to safely run free in the grounds.
Highly recommend this accommodation for families, couples or friends.

Owner response

Thank you for your super review. It was lovely having you all here, a good start to the season for us. We appreciate that you enjoyed the house and thank you for looking after it so well. We also enjoyed the pizza evening, you are all great company and it is good to laugh. I hope that you will remember us with your "momentos", where are you going to find another one, would you want too!! ;)
Love to see you again some day and thanks again.

This is our second visit to Guillemassot - we don't usually return to previous locations but we fell in love with the area and couldn't resist another holiday in the lovely accommodation - Guillemassot truly is home from home with everything you need and more - the lovely barn conversion is extremely well equipped and comfortable with all the charm of traditional French living - Spotlessly clean, the bedrooms are individual and restful with good ensuite facilities (excellent showers with lashings of hot water) - Our family of 8 (7 adults and a baby) had everything they could possibly need - The outdoor space was more than ample for us all plus our 2 dogs, totally unspoiled views of the vineyards, woodland and pretty scented gardens. Our family loved the large warm swimming pool - plenty of games and outdoor toys for our tiny grandson and the alarm on the pool was an added bonus for anxious parents.
On our first night we booked home made Pizza - this was a great opportunity to eat delicious food and drink local wines in the company of the hosts Jan and Jim who really go the extra mile to ensure you have all you need - their kitchen garden is packed with salad leaves, herbs and fruits all for use if required -
This property provided our family with a holiday to remember forever, no frills, no gimmicks, just first class service, excellent facilities and attention to detail that ensured we wanted for nothing- Thank you J&J - we highly recommend.

Owner response

Thank you for your fabulous review. It was just lovely to have you and your growing family back here at Guillemassot and that you all enjoyed your second visit as much as the first. As I said while you were staying that it was a pleasure for us to hear all the happy laughter and fun coming from your side. Guillemassot has done her job.
Jim is pleased that you enjoyed the Pizza on Arrival Evening and that you appreciate his efforts in the veggie garden too.
Thank you again for the kind words it is much appreciated.

A real find! Just returned from three fabulous weeks at Guillemassot. Jim and Jan were welcoming from the start and have thought of everything that makes a holiday that extra special. The gite is well equipped and beautifully maintained. Set in a wonderfully peaceful location,it's the perfect place to bring children and dogs alike (even a naughty toy poodle who kept jumping into the swimming pool!). Would definitely recommend to friends and family and have already booked to return next summer. Can't wait...

Owner response

See you in 2017....
