St Emillion is probably the most famous wine making centre in the world. Just 25 mins drive from La Graule this picturesque hilltop town is well worth a visit where you can spend the day tasting in the numerous wineries in and around the town.
The Cave of Lascaux contains one of the most outstanding displays of prehistoric art ever found. Originally discovered by four boys in 1940 while they were out looking for a lost dog, the cave was closed 20 years later as the artwork was becoming damaged from the onslaught of curious visitors. The existing Lascaux cave is an exactingly reproduced version next to the original, but don't be put off by this as it's well worth a visit.
Bastide towns are ancient walled towns typical of the Dordogne region. Recommended are Issegiac, Eymet and best of all is Montpazier (50 mins) voted one of the 10 most beautiful towns in France. Further east (1hr 30 mins) lie the spectacular clifftop towns of Sarlat and Domme. Both towns can be crowded in the summer months so we advise you to go there in the evening when they are lit and have a romantic feel.
Bergerac (35 mins) is the local centre for agriculture, wine and tobacco. Here you can find large supermarkets, shops and restaurants. The old quarter is interesting and a good place for a late lunch in one of the outdoor cafes, restaurants or pizzerias.
The historic city of Bordeaux is one of the 5 largest cities in France and has much to offer the tourist. Here you can find cathedrals, museums, art galleries and much more. More info at www.virtourist.com/europe/bordeaux/index.html
The Dune de la Playa lies to the south of Bordeaux in the Arcachon Bay around 1 hour 20 minutes drive from La Graule. It is the highest sand dune in Europe and reaches a height of 107m. At it's summit the view is spectacular with the ocean coast, the inlet of the Bay, the vast pine forest behind and, when the sky is very clear, the Pyrenees on the horizon!
Regional Delicacies include truffles, walnuts, duck, goose and foie gras. Being close to Bordeaux the seafood here is also very good. There are a number of excellent restaurants we recommend - more details at the property.
Local Markets are one of the great pleasures of a holiday in France. Here you will be able to sample quality local grown produce, local game and regional delicacies. In fact, the perfect way to begin your holiday is to visit a local market on your arrival to stock up. Particularly good ones worth visiting are the Saturday morning market in Ste Foy le Grande and during the summer months, the night market in Eymet.
Just returned from a lovely relaxing break at La Graule with friends. Plenty of room in the house and we made good use of the BBQ, pool and terrace. Plenty of places to visit, including walking to the local Vineyard where we met Robert, very friendly and great time tasting his wines. Also went to the pop up restaurant on the river for duck and chips where a local jazz group were playing.
Thank you so much for your lovely review. Hopefully we will see you again sometime.
La Graule is a spacious and beautiful house. The grounds are extensive and well kept and delightful with a splendid large pool. The house is cool and beautifully furnished. The kitchen is well stocked with abundant crockery cutlery and many pots and pans. The bedrooms are large with excellent bedding. Every bedroom had a hair dryer and a plentiful supply of towels including good quality pool towels. The special touches such as the chandelier on the covered terrace, the play room, plentiful electric plugs and loads of games for adults, made for an unforgetable holiday.
The owners provided excellent support as did the local manager. We would wholeheartedly recommend this property.
Thank you so much for your lovely review. Really appreciate it. Hopefully we will see you again sometime.
