Maison Pyron & Le Grenier
Situated in the picturesque rolling hills of the Chalosse, this beautiful villa has been recently lovingly restored to provide spacious and comfortable accommodation, ideal for extended/three generational family holidays or groups of families holidaying together. It is perfect for relaxing holidays and getting away from everyday stresses in a tranquil part of undiscovered rural France and for exploring family beaches and surfing on the Atlantic coast (Biarritz, Capbreton); visiting local market towns, wines tours and tasting; walking in the Pyrenees; swimming in lakes in Mugron, St Pierre-du-Mont and Orthez and visiting San Sebastian.
The villa comprises Maison Pyron, a maison de maître built in 1871 (250m²) with four spacious bedrooms sleeping 8-9 and its annex Le Grenier, the property’s original grain store with two bedrooms sleeping 4 (75m2). Both are rented together as one property in the summer and have well-equipped kitchens with adjacent double frenchdoors leading onto a spacious terrace at the front of the property with bbq/plancha facilities. With six bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, one cloakroom with wc and handbasin and a fourth separate wc, the set-up is ideal for three generation family holidays. Le Grenier would work well for grandparents or couples seeking some privacy with its own entrance, garden and garden furniture to the side of the property.
Maison Pyron is surrounded by large gardens and private woodland (the latter yet to be developed) with views over the local countryside. A variety of exotic trees and plants, including peach, walnut, cherry and weeping willows provide welcome shade on summer days with plenty of space for privacy or spending time together. The gardens provide a wonderful space to relax and unwind, to stop in your tracks to watch local wildlife - deer, woodpeckers and butterflies.
Maison Pyron is attractively furnished with a diverse range of beautiful French and European antiques and objects. With some original stone and tile floors downstairs and restored wooden floors upstairs, the house remains wonderfully cool during the summer months. On the ground floor the spacious lounge and dining room (seating 12) is furnished with two comfy sofas and armchairs and retains the unusual original floor tiles and a woodburning stove. The second sitting room also has original floor tiles and large fireplace with a soapstone woodburning stove for chillier evenings with two more comfy sofas. There is a smart television with both English and French satellite tv and a dvd player. This room leads onto the well-equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine, fridge-freezer, oven and 5 ring gas hob with large kitchen table. Double doors open onto the large terrace with a canopied dining and relaxation area (comfortably seating 12 and perfect for eating together al fresco) with bbq and plancha and overlooking the pretty Landais 'four' (ancient bake-house).
Upstairs you'll find four bright and airy bedrooms off the first floor hallway, comprising one king with private en suite shower room with toilet facilities and hand basin; one bedroom with a double bed; a third bedroom with a double bed and one single bed and a fourth bedroom with two single beds. There is a cloakroom with toilet and hand basin on the first floor and the family bathroom with bath, shower and hand basin is on the ground floor with a separate toilet next door.
The renovated Le Grenier offers bright contemporary accommodation and adjoining the far end of Maison Pyron, it overlooks its own garden, the pool, woods and grounds at Pyron. Downstairs you enter into a long well-equipped galley kitchen recently renovated with dishwasher, washing machine, fridge with freezer box, oven, hob, microwave, dining table and chairs and storage heater. The renovated staircase leads you upstairs to the main area with refurbished architectural wooden beams. There is a sitting area with a comfortable sofa, two club armchairs, two leather and chrome chairs and a television with both English satellite tv and French free to view tv. In the main area there is a reversible air-conditioning/heating unit and storage heater.
Off the main area are three separate rooms: bedroom 1 with a king size bed (152 cm x 198 cm); bedroom 2 with two single beds (90 cm x 190 cm) and a spacious bathroom with walk-in shower, washbasin, wc and heated towel rail.
For babies and younger children we can add a travelcot, stairgate, baby bath, toddler step tools, potties, changing mat, milk warmer (as well as microwaves in both properties), highchair and bibs.
We provide a Welcome Pack to get you started containing local wines, eggs from our free-range chickens, orange juice, croissants, jam, teas and coffees. We leave a starter kit too of olive oil, herbs, spices, dishwasher tablets, clothes wash, aluminium foil, etc… Supermarkets are now open here on Sunday mornings but do ask if you would like us to get a few other provisions in for your first day.
The house boasts a private in-ground 10 m x 5 m swimming pool. With solar heating, pool temperatures are increased throughout the summer to reach between 20-30° (depending on outside air temperatures and time of year). The pool is open from mid May to mid/late September, has a solar shower and is equipped with a safety alarm and gated fencing to keep young children safe around the pool area.
For nature lovers, you will find buzzards, kites, butterflies, roe deer, frogs and in the height of summer, crickets, grasshoppers and cicadas (all locally and in the rear gardens). Great for stargazing and spotting shooting stars in August as well as enjoying 'Indian Summers' in autumn, another great time of year to visit the region.
As on-site owners we carefully maintain the pool and gardens during your stay. A large barn beside the pool provides shade for dining and games and we provide sunloungers, a table tennis table, darts board, games and pool noodles. Previously an old farmhouse, there are some interesting relics and rustic items on display. Guests have priority use of the pool. We may occasionally use it but only when you are not using the pool and at the end of the day. We are on hand as much or as little as you wish and are happy to suggest visits, restaurants and day-trips. Speaking French I can help you with translations and arrange bookings, trips out or liaise with any return stopover hotels, etc…
Locally there are plenty of sports facilities: an Olympic size pool, golf courses, tennis, canoeing, cycling, many lakes with great walks and canyoning in the Pyrenees. Many towns and villages each hold their own summer fêtes during July and August. There is much to see locally (museums, chateaux, thermal spas, local farmers markets with fresh organic food and vegetables, Basque Country, Pau, wine-tasting and Armagnac tasting).
Maison Pyron is close to 4 international airports (Pau, Biarritz, Lourdes and Bordeaux). Your own car is recommended, as the property is rural but not remote.
Please contact us or see our separate adverts if you would like to book either Maison Pyron on its own or Le Grenier on its own.
There are two adjacent fully-equipped kitchens with dishwashers, washing machines, ovens, a 5 ring gas hob in Maison Pyron and an induction hob in Le Grenier, microwaves and fridge-freezers. French double doors lead directly out from both kitchens onto the canopied terrace with a further table seating 12 people, great for summer outdoor meals.

Since moving to Sainte-Colombe in 2012, Bea and Derek have been busy renovating Maison Pyron and Le Grenier, the gardens and installing the solar-heated pool which guests love. Following requests by larger groups of guests to rent both properties together, this is the option we now offer in peak summer, thus offering exclusivity of the pool and grounds. We will be onsite at Pyron and staying in Le Four, the detached Bakehouse.

|Why this location?||We love the peace and quiet of the countryside, local walks, the rolling hills of the Chalosse, the Pyrenees, Atlantic Coast and Spain (San Sebastian is only 2 hours by car) plus the local French food and wine. We have been warmly welcomed into the local community and hear about some great places to explore from our neighbours and friends, many of which we can share with you.|
