We are Dave and Kris Hallett and we moved to France permanently in 2011. Since then we have worked tirelessly on renovating our Basque property, learning the language, discovering the wonders of SW France, and integrating with the community - which we did by becoming volunteers at the village school and the local Maison de Retraite. We were adopted by a lovable, abandoned puppy three years ago and so our forays out have included mountain tops, beaches and the yearly Tour de France!
|Year property purchased||2002|
|Why this location?||We discovered the Basque area by accident when staying with friends in the neighbouring Bearn region - and once we had found it, there was nothing to beat it! It is a beautiful area, with stunning landscapes and architecture - lots of white houses with Basque red shutters and with very diverse wildlife, flowers and fauna. As well as a well populated sky of swallows we are visited most days by kites and vultures who are fascinating to watch as they soar or spiral in the sky. The Basque Region in France has everything - including two languages and cultures - so the history of the whole area is rich with folklore, historical and religious references and sites of interest. We are well placed to get to a mountain top, beaches, airports, ferries, Spain, several major cities Bayonne/Biarritz and Pau) - most in less than an hour.|
|Unique benefits of property||The property is set just outside a small village in its own stand-alone setting in a quiet lane. It is not overlooked but it is close enough to the village centre to stroll along and take part in any of the fetes, festivities or activities taking place. We are just 5 km from the town of Saint Palais, which has everything you could need - including a number of doctors, dentists, opticians, chemists and a first class hospital. The cottage has been sympathetically restored to its former glory, with extra character added using the old beams saved after the roof was replaced. We had the opportunity to put our mark on it and we trust the photos do our 'labour of love' justice. Jauberria is a light and airy cottage and has modern fittings, as well as practical, and attractive, typical Basque features - beams, wood and chimney places. See Facebook 'Jauberria' which shows our 14 year journey thus far - and another ongoing renovation we are currently undertaking.|
The area surrounding Jauberria is a landscape of farming, countryside, quiet rural life and an amazing diversity of nature - and with the most stunning sunrises/sunsets. If you are a keen walker, bird watcher, fisherman, skier, river sports, surfer, cyclist, artist, photographer or nature-trail fan who loves the diversity of rivers, mountains, countryside and the sea, then we are ideally situated - we are less than an hour from all four. In one day you can comfortably visit ancient caves, take a mini train up a mountain and paddle in the sea. We have a wealth of knowledge and experiences, and happy to share! We are on the route of the famous Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle and from May to October pilgrims from all over the world pass through our area, via our local town St Palais. St Palais has a huge outdoor swimming pools complex, suitable for all ages next to the river, with tennis courts, sports pitches nearby and close to all the town shops. The Basque Force games take place every August - a competition based on farm activities - where individuals and teams compete to show their strength. Pelote is the national game in the Basque Region and every Wednesday evening throughout the summer the local League plays at the Fronton (the pitch) in St Palais. Its a hard and fast game! Its free entry; they just ask you to buy a raffle ticket to win a local specialality dessert, a Gateau Basque, which is delicious. similar to a Bakewell tart.. Bilbao, San Sebastian and Pamploma are all a possible day trip and Beyrie is just a 45 minute drive to the Spanish border at Arneguy where they are well stocked with duty free shops. There are fetes, markets, free weekly outdoor concerts with Basque choirs and dancers, as well as many other events and activities (Moto Cross, cycle races, to name two) all throughout the summer months especially. Whatever your hobby or interest - it's all here - and if it's too many to remember, we have listed them in our Visitors Directory.
