Maison Lajus was, until 1995, a working farm, both livestock and arable. Sadly, the farmer died and the farm closed, and when his wife died in 2004, the property was placed on the market. We were fortunate enough to discover the house in January 2006 and promptly purchased it, even though it was a little run down. We commenced a programme of renovation which included installing bathrooms, rebuilding bedrooms, and a complete upgrade of the kitchen. We installed the pool, and renovated the old farmhouse where we now live.
We believe we have created a special experience for anyone looking for a relaxing holiday away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The property is entered from the courtyard into the hallway. To the left is the spacious day kitchen(20m²), fully fitted with a fridge-freezer, microwave, oven and hob, coffee-maker, kettle, dishwasher etc. A welcome pack is left with bread, butter, wine, orange juice, eggs, and the staples (oil, vinegar, condiments, herbs, tea, coffee). There is a woodburning stove for winter (wood included) and comfortable seating for 8.
You will find a washing machine, tumble dryer, and rotary drier in the Pool House.
On your right from the hallway is the large lounge (28m²), with comfortable leather sofas and chairs, a poele a granulees (pellet stove) for winter warmth, cd player, large flatscreen tv and dvd player. There is a selection of cd's, dvd's, books and games available.
Upstairs is the Master bedroom, with en suite shower room and wc, 4 poster king size bed, a wardrobe and drawer space.
The Balcony room has two comfortable 90cm single beds, a wardrobe, and drawer space.
The airy third bedroom has two 90cm single beds, a child's bed, a wardrobe, and drawer space.
The fourth bedroom, has a large single bed.
There is a house bathroom with washbasin, shower and wc.
Hair dryers are provided in each double bedroom.
The Master bedroom has an en suite, with modern shower, wc and washbasin.
The house bathroom has a modern shower, wc and washbasin.
We have recently installed a pellet burning stove that heats most of the house, and there is supplementary electric heating in the bedrooms.
There as a small woodburning stove in the kitchen.
The house receives French Freesat tv via a satellite dish, and a full selection of UK and Sky programmes through the telephone network. We have full wi-fi, but being rural France this runs at about 3Mb, so things can be a bit slow!
Outside there is a large gated private courtyard. The terrace by the house has a large table with seating for 8, and a gas bbq. At the bottom of the courtyard is the Swimming Pool, with terrace, sunloungers and seating. The pool is unheated and available June to the end September unless you are particularly hardy! The pool is 8 metres long, with a built in Jacuzzi in the steps and a jet to swim against. Normal summer temperature of the pool is 25 - 30 degrees. There is a Pool House with a shower, washbasin and wc, plus a small summer kitchen and a fridge to keep the drinks cool.
From the courtyard you access the lawned garden, with a further terrace sheltered by vines and wisteria, perfect for that morning cup of coffee or a glass of something in the evening. We have figs, plums, apples, cherries, peach and nectarine trees, and our vegetable garden has onions, potatoes, melons, tomatoes, cucumbers etc. which you are welcome to pick, depending on the season.
There is ample off-road parking in the Courtyard.
Unfortunately there are steps to access the property, and no downstairs sleeping accommodation or bathroom facilities, which renders the property unsuitable for wheelchair users.
The property is ideal for families, and the swimming pool has a security cover which we recommend is kept in place when the pool is not in use. The courtyard is fully gated.
Breakfast and picnic lunches can be provided at 6.50 euros per person.
After 36 years working in the UK wine trade I retired to the Madiran region to concentrate on our gite business along with my wife Sue, Harry the dog, two cats and not forgetting the management team of 9 chickens!
|Year property purchased||2006|
|Why this location?||The Bearn region of South-West France has a beautiful temperate climate, though considerably warmer than the UK. We still enjoy the 4 seasons, though Spring starts in February, Summer lasts from May to October, Autumn through to the beginning of December, and then a short winter. The region boasts 260 days of sunshine a year (160 in the UK), and the rain is mainly confined to the Spring months.
The locals are very friendly and welcoming, and the area is still very traditional, with weekly markets in most towns.
The majestic Pyrenees Mountains are only 50 miles away, and can be clearly seen from the region. The Atlantic coast is just over an hour away by car with miles of sandy beaches and wonderful surf.
The region is renowned for its cuisine, and the vineyards of Madiran and Jurancon are on hand to provide the perfect wine.
|Unique benefits of property||The house is located in the small hamlet of Armau, 4km from the market town of Lembeye, which has a supermarket, bakery, 2 bars, three restaurants, and a health centre. There is a weekly market on Thursdays.
The property is situated in an acre of grounds, with a private courtyard and swimming pool exclusively for the gite. Guests are welcome to help themselves to fruit and vegetables in season from the garden, and there is a good supply of fresh eggs from the chickens. There is a large grassed area for children's play, and three terraced areas for your relaxation.
The renovated farmhouse offers stylish accommodation for up to 7 people.
Graham and Sue live next door in the original 350 year old farmhouse, and are on hand to give advice on things to do and see to get the most from your holiday.
Restaurant de la Tour, Lembeye is one of the best eating places in the region with a varied menu of local fare, and a very genial host, Michel.
Chateau de Crouseilles, Madiran is just a few kilometres away and is the largest wine cooperative in the region. They hold many events throughout the year. There is a shop open every day offering tastings and our guests have the option to purchase wines at discounted rates.
We have several local lakes within a few kilometres which offer mountain views and the chance to see some of our local wildlife, including deer, kites, buzzards, kingfishers etc etc.
The beautiful city of Pau, birthplace of Henry IV, is only 30 minutes away. It offers elegant shops, stunning mountain views, great restaurants and many cultural events throughout the year. It has a world famous showjumping event in October, a Grand Prix and Historic Grand Prix in May, and horse racing.
The International Jazz Festival is held in July and August in Marciac (25 minutes away) and attracts some top names in the world of Jazz. There are other events through the year.
