Located in a tranquil setting just a short drive from the historic thermal spa town of Salies de Béarn, Orchard Cottage is one of 4 independent holiday cottages in the grounds of Domaine Lavie, an historic manor house. Other properties on the domaine are Orchard Cottage, Park Cottage and Terrace Cottage.

Orchard Cottage comfortably sleeps 4 but also provides spacious accommodation for a couple. The property has one double bedroom with en suite shower room and one twin room with an adjacent shower room and separate wc. Good quality bed linen, bath and pool towels are provided.

The double bedroom has an en suite shower room. There is another shower room adjacent to the twin bedroom and a separate toilet. For our youngest guests a baby bath is available that fits into the shower tray.

Garden and outside

Outside the south facing private patio has views towards the swimming pool and valley beyond. Garden furniture and a gas bbq are provided for al fresco dining or simply enjoying a morning coffee or evening apero.

The large 14m x 8m south facing swimming pool is surrounded by a spacious terrace with plenty of sunbeds and parasols and is shared between the 4 holiday cottages. Surrounding the properties, our 7 acres of parkland gardens are there for you to explore and enjoy.

Parking and garages

Off road parking 20m from the cottage - the area surrounding the cottages is a car free zone.

Visitor suitability

Due to the gravelled courtyard, unfortunately the cottage is not suitable for wheelchair users and due to steps may not be suitable for those with reduced mobility - there is one step at the front door, three steps from the patio to the sitting room and two steps inside the cottage separating the kitchen/dining, sitting room and twin bedroom from the adjacent toilet, shower room and the double bedroom. I am happy to discuss any concerns about accessibility prior to booking to ensure that the cottage meets your needs for your perfect holiday.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Julie Dyckhoff

I'm Julie and I live at Domaine Lavie with my husband Ian and our 3 teenage boys. Moving to France was the fulfilment of a long held dream of a different lifestyle in a warmer climate where summer barbecues are guaranteed.

Year property purchased 2014
Why this location? Equidistant between the Pyrenees Mountains and the Atlantic Coast, we fell in love with the beautiful Béarn region and the medieval market town of Salies de Béarn. Finding Domaine Lavie, just 5 minutes away from the town but situated in a rural location with lovely views, was the icing on the cake! There are a wealth of activities on offer within easy reach for all ages and interests in the Béarn and neighbouring Basques and Les Landes regions. There's also the bonus of being close to the Béarn, Jurançon, Irouléguy, Turan and Madiran wine regions.
Unique benefits of property We live on-site and one of our greatest pleasures is meeting our guests and seeing them enjoy our home and our region of France as much as we do. Our philosophy is simple: it's your holiday and we won't interfere, but if you would like some advice on places to go, or help booking a restaurant, or just a chat, then we're here for you.

The Owner Recommends

Salies de Béarn

This picturesque town takes its name from the Saleys, the small river which meanders through the centre past 17th and 18th century, half timbered buildings. Take some time to stroll through the charming, flower filled back-streets and narrow alleyways, looking up every now and again to really appreciate the beautiful architecture. Have a coffee and soak up some café culture or enjoy lunch or dinner in one of the many excellent restaurants Salies has to offer. Thursday is market day when the town takes on an altogether more vibrant atmosphere, so join the locals on their weekly shop and pick up some regional delicacies such as Foie Gras, Brebis cheese or Bayonne ham. For wine lovers, a visit to Salies de Béarn's last independent wine producer, Domaine Lapeyre et Guilhemas, is a must.

Visit the salt museum to find out how the town became famous for its salt and why it is an essential part of the culinary repertoire of south west France and the only salt allowed to be used in the production of the local Jambon de Bayonne (Bayonne ham). Then head over to the thermal spa and take a dip in the warm waters that are rich in minerals and contain 10 times more salt than the sea - a happy by-product of the salt production.

Further Afield

The Béarn region and the neighbouring Basque Country are areas abundant in historic sites, ancient châteaux, picturesque villages, lively markets and wonderful restaurants. The beautiful towns of Pau, Biarritz, Bayonne and St Jean de Luz are all within easy reach, as are the fabulous beaches of the Atlantic coast, famous for surfing but also offering miles and miles of golden sands for families to enjoy.

The magnificent scenery of the Pyrénées is just over an hour away and the mountains provide a paradise for walkers, birdwatchers, skiers and serious cyclists. Le Petit Train d'Artouste, the highest train in Europe, or Le Petit Train de La Rhune, a cog-driven railway at Sare, will both take you on a breathtaking trip up the mountains ending in spectacular views. If you are curious about caves, there are several worth visiting, including Les Grottes de Sare, close to La Rhune, and Les Grottes de Bétharram towards Lourdes.

If you're looking for water based activities then, in addition to surfing, canoeing and kayaking are available just down the road at Sauveterre de Béarn and Sorde d'Abbaye, as well as whitewater rafting and hydrospeeding for those who are after something a bit more exhilarating!
