FLEXIBLE CHANGEOVER DAYS - CHOOSE A DAY TO SUIT YOURSELVES!
Our village cottage is situated directly opposite the excellent Artisan Boulangerie in Montaut, a quiet and beautiful 'Bastide' settlement in the Lot et Garonne region of South West France. Bergerac Airport which is served by the low cost airlines is an easy 45 minutes drive away. Bordeaux,Toulouse and Limoges Airports are also accessible.
The countryside around Montaut is ideal for walkers and cyclists - we have two bikes available to use during your stay. There are numerous well marked paths to follow locally. The area is renowned for its traditional markets and you may visit a different village or town each day of your holiday. Montaut has its own night market on Friday evening during July and August when the village comes alive with local producers selling a variety of fresh fare. Music and entertainment are provided - it's only a short walk back to base at our cottage!
Monflanquin hosts a traditional festival in mid - August which is a colourful pageant with origins dating back to medieval times. It is held in the local square and is a spectacle not to be missed.
Dining out is a pleasure with so many excellent restaurants within a short driving distance. The 'Plat du Jour' are always good value and of a high standard - look for those with lots of locals to guage the quality and value!
A short distance from Montaut is the lake at Lougratte which is an excellent place to spend a day swimming and relaxing. The lake is supervised by Lifeguards and has its own sandy beach, diving pontoon and water slide.
The layout of the cottage makes the accommodation very flexible. The upper floor has two bedrooms and a bathroom whilst the ground floor has a large double bedroom and a shower. This arrangement makes 2 separate sleeping areas and gives each group their own privacy and their own bathroom facilities. We feel the cottage is best suited to groups of four due to the size of the outdoor living area which is essential in such a fantastic climate. It does however provide a special atmosphere when sipping a glass of chilled local wine with the illuminated 12thCentury tower as a backdrop
The cottage has been fully renovated to provide accommodation on three floors with bedrooms on the Upper and Ground levels. The spacious and light living area on the middle floor has a beamed ceiling and provides a wonderful relaxing atmosphere for guests to unwind. Adjoining this is a fully fitted kitchen with dishwasher, washer and large range style oven.
Outside is a lovely courtyard/garden with its own well together with two seating areas.
The kitchen is fully fitted with all facilities.
The dining area has a 'refectory' style table and two benches which can comfortably seat 6
The Living room is 60 sq meters in size and incorporates the dining area. There is a central feature staircase allowing access to upper and ground floors. It has two very comfortable sofas with several armchairs and is an ideal environment for relaxing/unwinding at the end of a day
One double bedroom on the upper floor and a second double/twin bedroom with a bathroom and toilet. Ideal for a couple or a family of four
The ground floor has a a double bedroom which is accessed via a utility room. There is a private shower and bathroom here.
Top floor bathroom has a shower attached to the bath together with a toilet and washbasin
Ground floor has a shower room and toilet with basin
The middle floor is heated by an 'eco friendly' wood pellet stove.
There are a number of electric heaters available should the temperature become chilly
There is a lovely private courtyard which has its own well and two small seating areas with garden furniture to seat 6 people comfortably.
Cars may be parked outside the church which is only a short walk from the cottage
A car is essential due to the rural location.
The medieval towns and villages with their ancient markets are a joy to visit. Set amongst some of the most beautiful rural countryside in France this is the perfect place to relax and enjoy life in the slow lane.
Take a 30 mins drive back towards Bergerac and do some wine tasting at the numerous 'Vente du Vin' along the roadside. One of the largest and amidst the beautiful setting of a chateau is at Montbazillac. Make your own selection of local wines at unbelievable prices. There is nothing better than sampling a crisp, white Sauvignon Blanc on a hot summers day, surrounded by vineyards and lovely countryside.

We spent three wonderful weeks during September in this charming gite with family and friends. Le Bourg impressed from the start: full of character, comfortably furnished, well equipped and spotlessly clean - we felt relaxed and at home straight away. The hot sunny weather allowed us to take full advantage of the garden where we enjoyed barbecuing, reading or relaxing with a glass of wine. It was the first time we had holidayed in the Lot-et-Garonne and it did not disappoint. We found the friendly village of Montaut an ideal base for visiting the many historic bastide towns, impressive chateaux and picturesque villages of the region. We were fortunate to enjoy the last of the lively night markets of Issegeac and Villereal where we enjoyed local food and entertainment. There are many lovely walks starting in Montaut, but because of the very hot weather, we only managed to do a couple of short ones. Also, having an artisan boulangerie opposite, allowed us the luxury of having fresh bread, croissants or pan au chocolates. We should also mention Lois (the owner), who was always very friendly and helpful in all our dealing with her. On reflection, we couldn’t have chosen a better gite for our holiday.
We spent a wonderful week here in early September. Lois (the owner) was very helpful and accommodating in helping us finalise the booking and made us feel welcome. The setting is rural and tranquil so great if you like to be away from too much hustle & bustle. The property is spacious and in good order with all the required facilities. Opposite the house there is the village bakers shop. From here we went out on a number of the excellently marked walks. We also enjoyed the local markets and choosing from a wide selection of restaurants within 10-20 minutes drive. There is an interesting chateau at Biron about 30 minutes away which we visited (be sure to get the English audio guide with headphones). We chose to take the ferry to Bilbao and then drive back up through Spain and France. Montaut (beware there is more than one French town with this name!!) is an easy day's drive from Bilbao. Journeying north after staying here we stopped off in Le Mans and visited the 24 hours circuit and museum. What a great combination!!
