About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Yvonne Clarke

We retired early in 2002 and were looking for a new project. Once we walked onto the land of Les Costes we knew we had found exactly what we were looking for. We completely renovated the cottage and lived there for 3 years whilst local artisans completely renovated the stone tobacco drying barn which is our home. We have been renting out the cottage since 2007 and each year have welcomed our summer clients.

Year property purchased 2002

St Emilion

Beautiful Medieval town well known for it's Grand Cru wines. Many bars and restaurants. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and just a few kilometres from where the last battle of the 100 years war was fought. Full of historical ambience

Lovely Bastide Town which holds a lively market on a Thursday. Many of our clients just enjoy sitting in the village square with a beer or a coffee and watching the world go by. There is also a good choice of restaurants

A lovely small town dominated by its beautiful and interesting Chateau. Built higher than the surrounding countryside meaning that the views are beautiful. Colourful market on a Monday. Couple of good restaurants and 2 or 3 bars

One of the larger Bastide Towns which holds a lively market on a Thursday. Sit in the market square and enjoy a lovely meal or just have a drink in the bar and watch the world go by. Wander around its little craft shops and look out over the beautiful surrounding countryside. Visit Chateau Byron on the way home

A beautiful city set along the river Garonne. Visit the wonderful shopping area featuring many designer shops. Full of restaurants and bars and lovely architecture.

Arcachon and the Dunes de Pyla

A 2 hour journey but well worth the visit outside of July and August. Arcachon is a lovely town with a choice of restaurants overlooking the beach. The dunes de Pyla are the highest dunes in Europe and are difficult to describe because they are so awesome

Perfect to totally relax and unwind. Yvonne and Paul made us feel very welcome. We had unlimited use of the pool, lovely and clean and perfect in the 30 degree plus heat!...and spent hours lazing and reading in the shade of the trees next to the pool, with the 3 free range chickens and rooster (quietly) keeping us company! The garden was lovely and we were able to walk to the end of their boundary to look over the countryside (saying hello to their 2 rescue donkeys in their paddock along the way). The cottage has everything needed and was actually a lot bigger than the photos suggested - large bedroom and large bathroom all on ground level. A good size fridge freezer, washing machine, iron/ironing board and we’ll equiped kitchen meant we had everything needed. We made good use of our terrace and (gas) bbq - totally private. Location is the end of a quiet no through lane with small cluster of houses nearby. Very quiet/peaceful. We went to Duras for supermarket, which was about 5 miles away. Duras was lovely and we had a few meals there ....recommend the Terrace, high quality food, perfect to watch the sun setting behind Chateau Duras. Also went to Duras Thursday night time market where you could buy street food - recommend you go to the Chateau Duras Illumination show to end your evening - a bargain @ 3€! (take something to sit on). Our day trips included Bergerac, Bordeaux, Chateau des Milandes and Sarlat - bit of a drive but worth it, plus you see the beautiful countryside!

Les Costes is a cosy wee property in a quiet part of the countryside but close enough to local shops etc for the all important supplies. The property is obviously well maintained and well appointed and the service provided by the owners is second to none. Every facility is provided, all you need to bring is yourselves!!

It is an ideal base for viewing the surrounding area with large and small towns, vineyards and of course markets within easy driving distance. I would definitely recommend this property as a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. Well worth the "10's" all round.

The cottage lived up to its description, well-equipped, comfortable and clean. The living area is very attractive and a real home from home. Paul and Yvonne were very welcoming, providing us with wine, bread and cheese on arrival, and were very hospitable and helpful throughout our stay. The private garden and terrace were sheltered and peaceful. The pool is lovely though we hit a chilly period of weather so didn't take advantage of it. There are nice walks straight from the cottage and the area is full of attactive villages and places to visit. Paul and Yvonne recommended some excellent restaurants to us. It was one of the nicest gites we have hired and would certainly recommend it.

This large one bedroom property is perfect for a holiday mixing poolside relaxation and beautiful countryside. While the owners live in the adjoining main house you never feel less than totally welcome to wander through the grounds or to lounge by the pool. It is as if you are their guests: you are encouraged to help yourself to their tomatoes, chillies or figs. Before we booked the owners were extremely helpful in answering our questions, even sending us a pictures of the panniers on the bikes they make available.
