Bessat itself sits on 1 hectare of land and the surrounding area has beautiful sunflower, fruit and vegetable fields and plum trees grown for the delicious pruneaux d'Agen and hazelnut orchards. It’s perfect for going off on long walks or biking along the lanes for a quiet appreciation of nature and the chance to relax away from crowds.
The Lot et Garonne is one of the top producers of fruit and vegetables in the southwest, its sleepy, relaxed and quintessentially French, everywhere in the department you will find traditional market towns and small picturesque villages. Cooking has an important role in this area and village life is exactly what you expect it to be. Dordogne has its own characteristics and the towns and villages are incredibly beautiful full of medieval architecture, dramatic French countryside, scenery, vineyards and rich culture. You have easy access to the highlights of the southern Dordogne such as Monpazier, Founded in 1284 by Edward I of England, Monpazier is one of the Plus Beaux Villages and is considered by many to be best preserved bastide in the Dordogne and Issigeac as well as numerous smaller villages and hamlets you will come across as you explore.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Julie Morse

I live with my partner here in this beautiful part of France. We left Cornwall in 2012 after me giving up my job and my partner winding down his gardening business. We bought a Motorhome off Ebay and set off to travel as much of Europe as we possibly could. Having covered much of Spain we entered back into France and that was as far as we got. After 2 years of housesitting and getting to know the departments of the Dordogne and the Lot et Garonne, we decided to make the move permanent.

Year property purchased 2017

The Owner Recommends

Villereal market Saturday mornings

One of the great pleasures for any food lover in France is the colour and theatre of the weekly markets. Each village holds one, attracting local farmers & producers from around the area.

In the summer months (July, August) many villages will host Marchés Nocturnes (night markets), so keep an eye out for signs announcing an upcoming Marché Nocturne during your stay – with tasty food & wine by the glass, they’re a lot of fun!

In winter, many villages put on beautiful weekly Christmas markets, most starting in mid December, in the early evenings. The lights, decorations and wonderful food create an atmospheric market experience. Monpazier hosts a great Truffle Fair in December, with a tasting session and truffle dinner. In May, gorgeous roses and a riot of colours greet you at Monpazier’s annual Flower Market. Each October Monpazier hosts seasonal Marchés aux Cepes (well worth watching the locals haggle over these delicious but elusive fungi!). Check for the dates of all upcoming markets & fairs, and music events, at the Office de Tourisme.

Wine Tasting

Between Bordeaux and Bergerac lie some of the most world’s most famous vineyards...Haut-Brion... Yurem...Rothschild... Margaux. A day trip to St Emilion or Medoc to explore these vineyards and those famous Chateaux is a must for any serious wine lover. Closer to home, the Bergerac appellation itself is well-known for its rosés and moelleux (sweeter whites), while nearby Chateau Monbazillac is world famous for its delicious sauternes-style white, which goes beautifully with anything from foie gras to blue cheese to a dessert. Another great local appellation is the Pecharmant, which is located just on the north-eastern outskirts of Bergerac. It offers a good range of earthy dark reds, and the chance to wander the grounds of a couple of beautiful old chateaux.

There are many excellent, friendly wineries close by which welcome you at the cellar door for tastings, even if you don’t speak good French! Here are just a few:
• Chateau Monbazillac (about 25 mins west)
• Chateau de la Jaubertie (also in Monbazillac area, about 25 mins west)
• Domaine de l’Ancienne Cure (on N21 near Monbazillac, about 20 mins west)
• Chateau Belingarde (near Pomport, about 30 mins northwest)
• Chateau Haut Garrigue (at Saussignac, about 45 minutes west)
• Chateau Tiregard (in Pecharmant, just northeast of Bergerac, about an hour)
• Chateau Terre Vieille (in Pecharmant, just northeast of Bergerac, about an hour)

Where do we start at how wonderful this holiday home is?!

The owners a wonderfully welcoming, friendly and helpful yet give you the privacy you wish.

Inside the property it is beautiful, elegantly French yet homely and comfortable. It has everything you need and more. The bedrooms are luxurious with walk in wardrobes. There is nothing that hasn't been thought of.

Outside is stunning. Gorgeous swimming pool surrounded by amazing scenery. The patio area for eating or drinking coffee/wine is perfect in everyway. We will miss picking the fruit from the trees right outside in the garden for breakfast!

The area itself is fantastic for buying local produce at the markets and then sitting and having local wine and charcuterie. There are lots of lovely restaurants if you don't fancy eating your purchases that evening just a short drive away.

We are already looking at dates to return but for longer this time!
