About this property

Stunning, Private, Peaceful With 360 Degree Views. This chateau is in a rural setting.

La Tuilliere History
We have owned the house since 1987 when we bought a wreck that had not been lived in for many years. The last 30 years has been a labour of love devotedly renovating, improving and maintaining it!

The House
Stone built farmhouse situated between St. Emilion, Bergerac and Duras. Self catering for up to 12 people. Six bedrooms and four bathrooms in the main house. Additionally there is a separate self-contained annex with kitchenette, large shower and all facilities for extra accommodation. There is a large farmhouse kitchen with woodburner, large table and all mod cons, a large sitting room with woodburner and tv and three external terraces (one covered) with tables and chairs. It is ideally set up for two families with au pair or granny with two en suite bedrooms on the ground floor.
In September 2015 we totally refurbished all the main house bedrooms and bathrooms, insulated and re-plastered all the walls and ceilings and replaced the old windows with bespoke double glazed windows.

The Grounds
The house is situated in the middle of 15 acres with fantastic, unspoilt 360 degree views of adjoining vines and countryside. There is total privacy and the view is calm and relaxing so you can sit back, sunbathe, swim, sleep, eat, drink and just chill out!

The Pool
In 2013 the original pool was replaced with a new heated, salt system pool with electric hard cover and shallow D end.
There is a large surrounding terrace.

What to do at the House
We have a floodlit boules pitch, 4 bicycles, table tennis, darts board and acres of mown grass to play anything from croquet, cricket, short tennis to baseball, and we have most of the gear!
For youngsters we have a twin tower climbing frame with slide, swings, see-saw, rock wall, rope bridge and picnic table.

Shops
Our local village is Loubes Bernac, 1km up the hill and it has a mini Intermache which caters for all essentials. Nadine will pre-order your breakfast croissants and bread and we also have three bakeries within 6kms including one who cooks in the old fashioned way over wood.
The nearest big town is St Foy La Grande (12 kms away) and there is a huge LeClerc supermarket which stocks everything including live lobsters in a tank!
More shops including the upmarket Grand Frais supermarket can be found in Bergerac about 15 kms away.

Markets
There are traditional French markets in various nearby towns on most days but the best is Ste Foy market on a Saturday (advise to go early in summer holidays), Miramont on a Monday and Bergerac on a Wednesday and Saturday. Eymet market is on a Thursday and is very popular too. There are weekly night markets in the summer.

Restaurants
There are a variety of restaurants around the region and our A-Z Guide lists about 30 of them from Michelin star gastro to value for money family establishments.
Alternatively we have a gas Weber BBQ, a charcoal Weber BBQ and our 'famous' open fire pit is often the chosen venue. We can also arrange a local caterer who will shop, cook, deliver and serve on request.

What to do in the Area
There is a championship golf course at Chateau des Vigiers and horse riding, fishing, tennis, canoeing - all within 5 or 6 miles.
Bastide towns are all around and of course wine tasting opportunities everywhere.
The historic town of St Emilion, a World Heritage Site is 25 kms away and the lovely old town of Bergerac with its large central church, covered market, selection of restaurants and river Dordogne is only 15 kms away.
The beautifully restored city of Bordeaux is about an hour and a half away (it has a very good park and ride system) and the beautiful beaches of Archacon and incredible Dune de Pyla (highest sand dune in Europe) is about a 2 hour drive away (more ++ in the height of the season!)
Alternatively you can just drive up La Tuilliere's 300 yard long drive, over the bridge (pull up the drawbridge - metaphorically speaking) through the avenue of trees to a real piece of paradise with total peace and relaxation.

Car hire
Car hire is available from Bergerac or Bordeaux airports.
In addition, we also have a Renault Megane Cabriolet (2+2) which is available for £75 per week in case an extra car is needed to go to the shops or golf course. It is fully insured for any driver over 21 with a clean licence.

5/5 SUPERB HOLIDAY HOME - Clare M July 2017
We had a wonderful holiday at La T. Fabulous house, great location and communication from the owner was excellent. Our group of 7 adults and 4 children easily fitted into the home. The 2 recently refurbished ensuite rooms were a real treat! The kitchen is well appointed and we weren't at a loss for any equipment/utensils.
Jayne the housekeeper/caterer was very helpful and we enjoyed one of her tasty 4 course meals one evening.
The kids loved the heated pool (as did the grown ups) and the annex is very useful as it has a shower room and toilet which saves wet children running through the house!
Can't recommend La T enough and we'll definitely be back.

5/5 A FABULOUS PLACE FOR A FAMILY HOLIDAY - Tharani S July 2017
We were a party of 10, with ages ranging from 9 to 81 years, plus a small dog. La Tuilliere provided ideal family accommodation for all of us: a traditional French farmhouse atmosphere with plenty of space for all of us to be comfortable; bedrooms on ground and upper floors which was helpful for the less mobile in our party; a great outdoor pool within view of the main house which made childcare easy; spacious grounds to sit in and a great location with small villages and shops only a short drive away. There was something for everyone and everyone enjoyed themselves. The property was well-maintained, both indoors and outdoors, and the owners bent over backwards to furnish our particular requests, which was very much appreciated. I would highly recommend La Tuilliere if you are looking for somewhere special to go for a family holiday.

5/5 A LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN - Tim D September 2016
La T is an idyllic location in which to spend a holiday either on your own or with friends and family. It is so tranquil and utterly relaxing. Uninterrupted views of the local countryside help to make it very special. My family & I enjoyed the most wonderful holiday in this unique place. Can't wait to go back.

5/5 ARCADIA ITSELF - Simon C August 2016
A delightful and tranquil location-excellent high class and clean accommodation providing every need for all age groups. Lovely covered outside eating area looking onto the superb grounds and delightful views fields and vineyards beyond. A truly excellent and large new swimming pool surrounded by superb loungers and elegant sun shades. All sorts of sporting possibilities- petanque, table tennis, badminton to name but a few. Local village supplying all necessary groceries /bread etc. Scenic countryside and towns of great interest to visit and good and varied l restaurants in the local area. Highly recommendable for a happy, peaceful and carefree holiday.

5/5 PERFECT PRIVATE LOCATION - Rachel J August 2016
What a superb place. "La T" was everything we'd hoped it would be - and more. It's privacy and spacious grounds make it a wonderful spot for a crowd of people to enjoy. The facilities are first rate with especially lovely bathrooms and the poolroom was a very popular self-contained unit. Julia couldn't have been more helpful and it was a real treat to have supper delivered on four evenings. The Saturday market at St Foy la Grande is a must and the huge Le Clerc supermarket is also an experience. I know we'll be back!

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Julia Higgins

Mike and Julia Higgins are a professional couple who have lived in the environs of Hampton Court for the past 40 years. We have two grown up daughters and two grandchildren. We bought our French home, La Tuilliere, in 1986 when it was in a sad state of neglect. Renovating and improving it has been a labour of love for much of the past 30 years.

Year property purchased 1986
Why this location? We searched most regions of France prior to buying in Aquitaine. We had no appetite for the North including Brittany/Normandy - the weather being the biggest factor. Provence and the Cote D'Azur did not do it for us either. Despite its popularity and beauty the South West is still unspoilt. Apart from the excellent climate, we were also attracted by its history, the chateaux, its beautiful medieval towns and villages, unspoiled countryside and prehistoric caves. Forget Paris, the cultural centre of France is now Bordeaux. St Emilion (a world heritage site), the Dordogne valley, Arcachon are just some of the many breathtaking reasons for being here. Arguably, the region also produces the best wine in the world and is the centre of French gastronomy. What more can you want?! No wonder the English spent 100 years fighting for it!
Unique benefits of property Inside:
1) The bedrooms are large and comfortable with Egyptian cotton linen.
2) All the bathrooms have separate showers.
3) Perfectly set up for multi generational families with two bedrooms and bathrooms on the ground floor.
4) Separate self-contained annex

2) 15 acres offering peace and tranquillity with 360 degree unspoilt views.
3) Heated, salt system 15m x 7m pool with shallow D end with electric hard cover.
4) Four eating areas, one of which is covered.
5) Luxury Bramblecrest outdoor furniture including tables, chairs, sun loungers, parasols & poolside sofas.
6) Floodlit boules pitch.
7) Large wooden twin tower climbing frame.
8) One of the largest Leclercs supermarkets in France just 10kms from the house.
9) Three types of BBQs
