I moved to South West France with my husband in 2013 and we set up the gite business the same year. We have enjoyed 5 very successful seasons, being fully booked each year. We very much hope this continues as we love what we do!
|Year property purchased||2013|
|Why this location?||We were looking for a location which gave us the four seasons but also gave the guarantee of long hot summers and milder winters. Having holidayed in France we discovered Aquitaine, in particular the Lot et Garonne, which appeared to have its own little micro-climate. Being south of the Dordogne means we miss most of the rain, which is always a bonus!
The rolling hills and vineyards of the cote de Duras are all around us and we knew it would make a great place for people to come and visit.
|Unique benefits of property||The property is located within beautiful countryside without being too isolated. You can cycle, walk or drive to the nearest village which is only 3kms away where you will find a butchers, bakers, newsagents, bar, hotel with restaurant, post office and a tourist information centre.
Also, the vibrant market towns of Eymet and Duras are only a short drive away so you have plenty of options.
The gite offers large, spacious and comfortable rooms and outside you will find a very welcoming pool set in beautiful gardens.
You will find local markets to visit almost every day of the week which are always great for browsing, people watching and of course purchasing your favourite food and drink. They are all just a very short drive away so you're not spending all of your time in the car!
There are plenty of local vineyards to explore, the nearest being approx 5 kms away. You can also cycle the Côtes de Duras wine route taking in the beautiful countryside and rewarding yourself with a cool glass of wine at the finish!
For a more intense wine experience, the mecca of wine 'St Emilion' is only an hour's drive away. You can wander the streets of the charming medieval city taking in the many shops, restaurants and cafes before ascending to the famous church with its spectacular panoramic views.
Famous for its Grand Cru wine, the ancient vineyards are wonderful to see and even better to sample the wine they produce!
From the minute you leave the door there are some lovely walks taking you through the peaceful countryside. We can provide plenty of maps to help you on your way, whether it be for a short stroll or more intense hike!
Enjoy traffic free country lanes meandering through some beautiful countryside! We have some great cycling routes on the doorstep and beyond. If you are a very keen cyclist and wish to bring your own bike we can store them safely for you. Alternatively we provide bikes for you to use free of charge.
If it's a short paddle you're after then you can hire a canoe in the nearby village of Allemans du Dropt during July & August. Alternatively, for a good day out, you can drive to the Dordogne river (approx 1.5hrs drive) where there are plenty of canoe hire companies who will recommend a route for you and pick you up at the end of the run. You could take a picnic and stop off en route and enjoy the magnificent scenery around you.
With lots of restaurants catering to all different budgets in the local area you won't be stuck for eating out. From simple 3-course lunches for 15 euros to more up-market 3-course dinners for 40 euros you can find something for every budget or occasion.
You can also try the many coffee shops around the Eymet area serving breakfasts, lunches and cakes.
If you fancy a day out a little further afield, Bordeaux is the perfect place to spend the day & evening. You can jump on the train at Marmande and be in Bordeaux within 45 minutes. To drive it would take approx 1hr 30mins.
Bordeaux is situated on the Garonne river and there is a fabulous promenade to wander along and take in the sights and sounds of the vibrant city. Stunning architecture, plenty of shops, restaurants and of course being the wine capital of the world you can visit the new wine museum which has been dubbed the world's greatest wine museum!
If a day at the beach grabs you, Arcachon can be reached by car in approx 2 hrs. Situated on the West coast, it is a great seaside resort made famous by the natural sand dune 'Dune du Pilat' which is approx 2.7km in size. If you're feeling brave you can walk up the side of the dune and take in the stunning views from the top.
There are plenty of boat trips that will take you out to the famous oyster bays and along Cap Ferret where you can get a glimpse of the 'millionaire mansions' dotted around the coastline.
We fell in love with this area remarkably quickly, and this was helped in no small measure by the super gite we stayed in at Les Hirondelles. As the swallows that the gite is named after swoop in the field that borders the property it is possible to sit on one of two private patios and unwind within moments of arriving. A friendly welcome from Karen and Ed followed by a quick tour of the gite revealed that the accommodation was all that we were expecting and more. Cool, clean and comfortable within, our hosts left a nice welcome pack, and proved to be full of friendly help, advice and local knowledge throughout our stay. They get the balance of being on hand and leaving you to it just right.
Externally, the gite is as pretty and luxurious as the pictures suggest. We enjoyed several days by the pool which benefits from several different seating areas to relax. We also visited 4 or 5 of the nearby towns and villages, favouring Eymet and Issigeac in particular - they are stunningly beautiful and incredibly relaxing. Karen and Ed also recommended assorted local restaurants and places to visit. Restaurants are reasonably priced in general, and occasionally offer very good value for money. (House wine is often surprisingly good and very cheap!)
We are so delighted that we selected Les Hirondelles as our base. It is near enough to lots of fabulous places to visit whilst also providing a peaceful haven away from it all, and Karen and Ed helped to make it just perfect.
We have just spent a wonderful 2 weeks at Les Hirondelles in beautiful french countryside. On arrival, we were given a warm welcome by our hosts Karen and Ed who during our stay couldn't do enough for us.
The gite had every home comfort you could wish for and the pool was simply amazing. Everything was immaculately kept and spotlessly clean. We made good use of the barbecue (of which there were two) as well as relaxing in the beautifully laid out garden.
The whole area was peppered with interesting and varied places to explore and the medieval town of Sarlat was breathtaking. A visit to La Vieux Porche restaurant is a must for traditional french cuisine and value for money.
We enjoyed our holiday so much we are returning again next year!
When asked by the owners of the gite whether there were any improvements they could make to enhance our experience, we could honestly think of nothing! On arrival we instantly felt welcome and comfortable within the beautiful surroundings. We were immediately struck by the attention to detail and the cleanliness of the property - a real home from home. The owners have thought about everything for their guests and could not have done more to make our stay the memorable one it was. Their knowledge of the local area and suggestions for excursions and recommendations for restaurants were all totally reliable and we were never disappointed. We particularly enjoyed visits to St Emilion, Domme, Assigeac, the night markets at Duras and Eymet and canoeing on the Dordogne river. For those who are looking for a tranquil, rural holiday retreat - this is it!
We are a mature, retired couple with 8 years experience staying in B&B accommodation whilst touring and also self catering gite type properties for periods between 7 and 14 days in France. Our appraisal of Les Hirondelles therefore is based on a reasonable amount of experience.
Previous guest reviews mirror our own as can be seen by reading the guest book which is open to view at this property. This year of 2019 was our 4th stay during the June period which we prefer as it has proved to be good for the beloved sunshine and also for the beautiful late spring countryside views.
Les Hirondelles is a totally self contained gite which is attached to the owners own property but with sole use of the beautiful pool and surrounding garden/lounge area. This area has to be seen to be believed and is what picture postcards are made of ! It is immaculately presented and a real credit to Karen & Ed, the owners who have a daily regime of maintenance with absolute discretion and respect for the privacy of their guests. The pool room contains all necessary flotation aids, loungers, sun brollies and even good quality cycles for the energetically minded guests.
The countryside location is spot on with immediate access for the car but with adjacent fields. We enjoyed breakfast and evening meals daily under the tiled canopy which overlooks a cropped field and small wood where the wildlife occasionally can be seen, including red deer !
Internally the standard mirrors our comments as above.
